Maldini said it “ slide tackling is an art that most defenders lack; use it only when necessary. Don’t just throw yourself on the ground all the time”.
Maldini once famously said "If I have to make a slide tackle I've already made a mistake" therefore I'd say from my experience is first principal of defending is intercepting the attackers thoughts by positioning yourself well as a defender to nullify the attackers options.
Literally love this, so many people say pressure get on him and then get mad when a guy gets beat because he stabbed or jumped in early. Literally love how he changed the wording to to players.
First principal of defending is anticipated positioning. 2nd is controlling the tempo, slowing down or speeding up the attacker to put him in a position where he's doubled up. 3rd is the standing tackle. 4th is slid tackle. 5th is the professional foul. So, the trainee was right. Even if it's a red card but prevents a goal.
'Pull him' is the exact right emergency rule. As a kid my coach told me "the ball can go past you, the man can go past you but NEVER allow both to go past you!"
It's not always the case. There are cases where defenders intends to delay but instead opponents will be looking for the best opportunity to pass or shot .
Very rare in academy level. Players want to prove their worth and cant really do so if they give up the ball be it recovered ball from opponent or pass. As a defender its easier to shine in academy level, shit gets tricky when you turn pro, opponent doesnt care if he takes the initiative himself or passes the ball he gets his salary either way lol
Poking is the key to destroy or slow down the opponent. Poking straight away works 90%success. Most of professional players don’t even focus on this. They just keep running backward when the opponent keep going forward to pass the defender or player.
My experience as a defender what I do is simple, when the opponent comes close don't go in...just back off and think in my head left or right repeatedly. Let him make the first move with one step before you enter. Because the attacker's movement is usually only two left or right side of you
Simple principles are the best. Deny space. Delay Opponent. Deflect away from Goal. Don’t dive in, stand up in your tackles, go to ground as a last resort.
I've seen a lot of goals scored from trying to delay. The defender delays and goes backwards and the attackers moves forward and instead of trying to take him on shoots and it's a goal in most cases bar the deflections and saves.
Yeah honestly the other thing that should be mentioned here is taking away options. You try to force someone to take shots from poorer angles, to cut off their ability to cross or to force them to pass rather than have a shot themselves. Rather than delay, what I was always taught was "contain."
I always like to relax, please relax and train speed, if you have some good acceleration and they know it, they’ll be insecure to make a move, when going against really good forwards, they’re so quick to react to the slightest move since it’s instinct to them, I use my athleticism to the fullest, reading a player is everything, also most forwards don’t expect you to just rush them and get in their face, so most of the time you can buy a lot of time or they just freeze
In my experience with this id say I agree, I used to slide a lot as a cdm but once i transitioned into defense it would be my last option no matter what. When in doubt poke it out. Last resort tackle them.
Have to disagree with poking. Poking is often easily maneuvered around and leaves you off balance and unable to continue defending. Much better to wait for a touch and step over and/or take the ball with your whole body. Poking like he does it draws fouls because your knee catches the dribbler.

I’d have to disagree. The first principle is anticipating where the ball is going to be. The second is not to delay, but to cut off the striker’s angles. And you never extend with your weight on the front foot.
Kid had it right pull him in and take the ball. He was just using his hand to translate for you. Sometimes you have to take the ball sooner than later especially if your own for too long.
Van Dijk literally did this all game and people were calling him a coward for it. They don't realise that it's actually working and has helped the team to get a lot of clean sheets.
In fact in some circumstances a foul is the right option, like Chiellini on Saka in the Euro final. Delaying not always good, especially if the opponent have quick feet or big acceleration. Defending while moving forward is signature of the best defenders.
Thank you! I did this when I played football and I kept the ball out from the goal and even if he’s managed to get past me the goalkeeper saved it. We ended up winning

It depends on the situation and the player who he comes up against. Footballing intelligence you have it or you dont. The only rule is to stay connected to your teammates
