@@SpikeMatthews Totally agree, the whole song is in these lyrics - it's amazing how many reaction videos use the same single edit and miss the point of the song. Like a dog lying in a corner They will bite you and never warn you Look out, they'll tear your insides out 'Cause everybody hates a tourist Especially one who thinks it's all such a laugh Yeah and the chip stains and grease Will come out in the bath You will never understand How it feels to live your life With no meaning or control And with nowhere left to go You are amazed that they exist And they burn so bright Whilst you can only wonder why
Oh yes !!! I absolutely ADORE Pulp (Jarvis Cocker, such a genius and a talented storyteller) , what a good surprise to see "Common people" on your channel, it was a huge hit ! For more Pulp, check out next "This is Hardcore", it's so good on the ears ! ;) - my absolute Britpop 90ies trinity : Pulp, Blur and The Divine Comedy !
My heroes! Seen them live 8 times and met them at a gig at the Royal Albert Hall for the Teenage Cancer Trust. Jarvis is an amazing frontman. ‘I Spy’ and ‘This is Hardcore’ are two of my favourites.
It was a revolution, like in 60’s, 70’s and 80’s the 90’s British music again conquered the world, it was called Britpop. Those were great times. I was in my 20’s in that decade.
That's the video / radio edit, the full length song has even more build, the very best lyrics of the entire song and the best of Jarvis' dramatic vocals
The brilliant thing with Pulp’s lyrics is that they are often incredibly pessimistic and downright “vicious” in their dark humour. But people seldom notice for the “uplifting” nature of the music…
They are one of my favorite bands ever. Jarvis is a master lyricist and storyteller. The production and arrangements are always stellar. They sound like nobody else. For a much darker side of them, listen to This Is Hardcore (the song and the album). It is a materpiece.
Their old stuff is really great too. The pre 1995 stuff. They seemed to start out even darker, not even sure how to describe it. Bit like the Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees mixed with the Smiths 🤣
This is something of an anthem in the UK and Jarvis Cocker is pretty much a national treasure! The lyrics are wondrous but you need to listen to the album version to get the full meaning. The single version is slightly shorter but leaves out the best and most cutting verse. The single version also censors the chorus. It should be, 'dance and drink and screw because there's nothing else to do. On the single/radio edit 'screw' is muted.
I love pulp, my favourite song of theirs is Do you remember the first time. Jarvis cocker also jumped on stage at an award ceremony and mooned at Michael Jackson, more waved his butt at him than mooned.I think Sadie frost was married to Jude law at the time
Pulp is part of the music subgenre known as Britpop, which went from around 1993 to around 1998. Bands associated with this style of music include Blur, Pulp, Oasis, Radiohead, Elastica, Suede, James, and many others. Good stuff. Britpop ended in the late 90s, as British popular musical tastes switched to boy bands and other types of fluffy pop music.
I was in my 20’s and living in Clapham Common when this came out. I also met him in a fancy organic food shop on upper street ( not very common 😂) and he was nice and about a foot taller than I expected and I am close to 6 ft 😂 a legend of a Man ❤
Great reaction Derek!! You know whats crazy. This was huge when it came out, but the band had already been going for 15 years apparently. I saw them live at a free music festival. Heineken 1995. One of the greatest days of my life. They were amazing!! And the atmosphere was awesome!!
Yes ! Nice reaction and I really love this song, you should try the live version @ reading 2011 Also try stone roses - waterfall or She Bangs the Drums ;)
Pulp are an English rock band formed in the South Yorkshire city of Sheffield in 1978. Their best-known line-up from their heyday (1992-1997) consisted of Jarvis Cocker (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Russell Senior (guitar, violin), Candida Doyle (keyboards), Nick Banks (drums, percussion), Steve Mackey (bass) and Mark Webber (guitar, keyboards). Throughout the 1980s the band struggled to find success, but gained prominence in the UK in the mid-1990s with the release of the albums His 'n' Hers in 1994 and particularly Different Class in 1995, which reached the number one spot in the UK Albums Chart. The album spawned four top ten singles, including "Common People" and "Sorted for E's & Wizz", both of which reached number two in the UK Singles Chart. Pulp's musical style during this period consisted of disco-influenced pop-rock coupled with references to British culture in their lyrics in the form of a "kitchen sink drama"-style. Cocker and the band became reluctant figureheads of the Britpop movement, and were nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 1994 for His 'n' Hers. They won the prize in 1996 for Different Class and were nominated again in 1998 for This Is Hardcore. Pulp headlined the Pyramid Stage of the Glastonbury Festival twice and were regarded among the Britpop "big four", along with Oasis, Blur and Suede. The band released We Love Life in 2001 and then took a decade-long break, having sold more than 10 million records. Pulp reunited and played live again in 2011, with dates at the Isle of Wight Festival, Reading and Leeds Festivals, Pohoda, Sziget Festival, Primavera Sound, the Exit festival, and the Wireless Festival. A number of additional concert dates were afterward added to their schedule. In January of 2013, Pulp released "After You", a song originally demoed for We Love Life, as a digital download single. It was the band's first single release since "Bad Cover Version" in 2002. On the 9th of March 2014, Pulp and filmmaker Florian Habicht premiered the feature documentary Pulp: A Film about Life, Death & Supermarkets at SXSW Music and Film Festival in Austin, Texas. The film toured the international film festival circuit and was released theatrically by Oscilloscope Laboratories in the US in November 2014. It is the first film about Pulp (and Sheffield) that has been made in collaboration with the band. The band once again went on hiatus following this, but in 2022, Cocker announced that the band would be reuniting for a second time to play a series of shows in 2023.
I loved this song the first time I heard it on KROQ (LA) when it first came out in the 90s. It’s got a great story structure to it. There is another song from the same BritPop period which has a similar kind of narrative on societal and economic realities called “Park Life” by Blur. Both this song and Park Life always bring a smile to my face because they both have that underlying Brit dry sarcasm in an irresistible “pop” package.
One of my all time favourite albums! I love songs that tell stories like this (like Hotel California, Mr. Brightside, National Express, etc. To name a few. As well as more Pulp of course.) 😁
I hope you understand the point of the song as that is why it resonates with alot of people over 50.the lyrics say it all and personally I think it is still valid today
One of my all-time favorite songs any genre anytime. It's absolutely perfect. The studio version is a bit longer with a killer additional verse that's even more biting than the ones in this version And lastly there are some live versions that are bonkers this song really shines live and the band is tight
99.9% of us are common people, we keep our heads down, we work , we survive and we hope tomorrow is a little brighter but we are pragmatic enough to deal with the truth that this is reality, we are not shiny movie stars, we are not millionaires, we are not leaders of nations.....we are the common people who make the world turn, we may not be the face of a generation but without us there is no next generation and without us the world stops turning....remember that all you common people like me
one of my favourite songs of all time. She is upper class and rich, she is slumming it a poverty tourist looking to see what its like but she could never understand, one call to daddy and she's back off to her mansion and life of the rich.
Pulp were part of a British musical genre in the 90s called britpop other groups in this movement included Oasis, Blur, suede, sleeper, Supergrass and The Charlatans. Pulp were one of the most successful groups in this genre with 12 top 40 UK hit singles 5 of which reached the top 10. Including Common people, Disco 2000, Mis-shapes and Help the Aged.
Pulp was (arguably) the powerhouse of the Bitish Pop heyday of the 90's. This album is not only a tremendous pop album but a brilliant ctiique on classism in England
You gotta watch the pulp documentary. He's one of the best people ever. And the story behind the song is superb. He went round for years with the riff that's basically 1 note.
You should listen to the full song. There is a whole chunk cut out at the end. It takes the song to a slightly annoyed and angry tone to the rich kid who wants to live like common people.
It’s all my young years! I was a huge fan of Pulp and other band of Brit pop (Blur, Suede…) Thanks to them I discovered other former bands (such as The Kinks) and I improved my English! You should try Sorted out for e ‘z and whizz from the same pulp album or the song Hardcore from the Lp hardcore . Javis Cocker had such a great voice! I also love when he sang Je suis venu te dire que je m’en vais (Gainsbourg song). My big regret is that I never saw Pulp in a concert (I was too young *sighs*)
The point of this song is the brilliant lyrics and the story it tells of a class divided Britain........everyone in the UK knows and loves this song, the video is a masterpiece, mirrors the narrative perfectly...😃
You should check out more Pulp. They were around at around the same time as Oasis and Blur. It is pure pop. Pulp were at the time expected to be the British band to break America but never did and after their hit album Different Class they never not the same heights again, that was peak Pulp. Jarvis Cocker is a British icon and is around on TV now with many different artistic projects on the go. Other songs I'd definitely check out are Do You Remember The First Time, Disco 2000, Misshapes, and Something Changed.
In my opinion, this ranks as the greatest song of the 90s.
The most British song ever written, full of dryness and sarcasm
And point explicitly missed by our USA cousins. What a shame.
Pulp are still banging Common People out live in 2023. Isle of Wight Festival. Jarvis is nearly 60, and he's still the man to beat.
Like nothing else at that time. ‘Disco 2000’ was an absolute banger too…⭐️
Can’t beat the nineties for Britpop bands and I agree disco 2000 was awesome to maybe even better
Disco 2000 is my jam. My generations Mr Brightside.
Yes it would be great to react to disco 2000 !!
You need to check out the full version, it has an extra verse that’s the best of the lot.
It's also the most venomous
@@SpikeMatthews Totally agree, the whole song is in these lyrics - it's amazing how many reaction videos use the same single edit and miss the point of the song.
Like a dog lying in a corner
They will bite you and never warn you
Look out, they'll tear your insides out
'Cause everybody hates a tourist
Especially one who thinks it's all such a laugh
Yeah and the chip stains and grease
Will come out in the bath
You will never understand
How it feels to live your life
With no meaning or control
And with nowhere left to go
You are amazed that they exist
And they burn so bright
Whilst you can only wonder why
"And they burn so bright, and you can only wonder why"
Full version is my all time favourite song. It bites!
Those who request never direct them to the unedited version . It helps if they do this when wanting a reaction.
"this is hardcore" is just Amazing !!!

Never a truer word said!!

Yep, the full length version is epic. It's one of the most thrilling songs of the 90s.
I was a bit bummed it wasn't the full lenght track, but still good enougj
Agree. The full length version has some of the very best lyrics
This version is like gravy without the roast beef - what were they thinking?
The brilliant thing with Pulp’s lyrics is that they are often incredibly pessimistic and downright “vicious” in their dark humour. But people seldom notice for the “uplifting” nature of the music…
You should check out the band 'Blur' for more British quirkiness, try their song "Girls and Boys"
Oh Yes he gonna loves this !
Suede
Oasis
Blur
Franz Ferdinand
...

The Kinks quintessentially British.
Ocean Colour scene!

To be fair, they are always dark and/or super cynical, even on upbeat songs like Common People.
@@bironmaiden8594 yes, it's the wonderful dark humour that always meant I preferred them over the more talked about Britpop bands.
yes, This is hardcore (song & album) is also an absolute classic for me ;)
Fun fact: Any time I play this in a Kindergarten classroom they instantly start moshing even though they have no idea what a mosh pit is.
😁😁😁
Awesome kids love to mosh
Moshing uses energy
Low energy makes you sleepy
Nap time is for sleepy kids
And time for a cup of tea for the teacher

They had to edit out the word 'screw' !! Presumably for MTV.
Which meant it didn't rhyme with next line, with nothing else to do .
'prom' - lol, it' s a club. Just a bit brighter than they usually are.

I guess Jarvis is famous for something else other than crushing MJ's parties.
If you like songs that tell a story, "Disco 2000" by Pulp is also a must-listen.
The best moment was Jarvis Cocker mooning during Michael Jackson's performance of Earth Song as the idolatry sickened him.
