- Let's have a look at how to tell if your iPhone X, iPhone XS or iPhone 11 has been water damaged by looking at the water damage indicator sticker hidden inside the SIM card tray. We'll also have a closer look at this sticker by opening up the phone and having a look at where it is located and how it works.

Hi Michael , great video and very informative. If I had the front glass replaced (not by apple) could the sticker be removed or covered while putting the new glass on the phone? It appears my phone is now missing the sticker, although I can't say I saw the sticker before the glass was repelaced as I did not look for it beforehand.
for your next videos, listen and watch the video first before uploading. You might notice some editing issues like the ratio between music volume and dialogue volume. It is difficult to hear what you are saying so we turn up the volume, but as soon as the music comes back it is super loud.
Thanks Nathalie. I’ve realised that the headphones I used for editing this video seem to prioritise voice over music. I’ve used different ones in subsequent videos.

Hi Michael, I have a question. I had the phone in the water for about 2 seconds. I was missing one screw on the bottom of the phone. Everything was fine, the next day I was able to call normally, but after 2 hours of the call, the phone started beeping during the call. The sound on the front and back camera works fine, the voicemail does the same thing as a call (beep) The SIM indicator is fine. I don't want to reach inside the phone because I'm worried about the possible warranty (I have no idea if only the service can open it), otherwise I have experience with it, but I'd rather go after the warranty. Thank you for you answer.

I dropped mine in water for about 2 seconds. I left it out to dry for about 10 hours, and everything seems to be fine. The SIM card port doesn’t have any red, and it seems to be charging alright. Should there be any issues, or can I start charging it again?
changed the screen on an XSM that I suspected may have gotten wet at some point as the indicator on the screen was red and the inside smelled a bit musty, couldnt find any indicator in the sim tray. new screen seemed to work without issue (old screen had a purple line on it indicating lcd dmg) but I let the owner know of the issue and that they may experience further issues later on, of which I am not responsible for.

My 11 pro max came in contact with water for maybe 20 seconds, but it worked just fine. After 5-6 hours I noticed a bunch of stuck pixels on my screen and when I pressed on the screen(gentle) trying to see if I can get them out my phone started flickering (the touchscreen works just fine, it s just the screen that flickers in 1 min after I start using the phone and then it shuts down. it s still in warranty, can I take it to apple support? thank you.

My phone might have come in contact with water a few days ago. But it wasn’t fully submerged.... Everything was working just fine, until my face id just stopped working out of the blue today... I tried setting up an alternate id, but it tells me to move my phone higher or lower. Everything except the face id seems to be working just fine. What am I supposed to do?
Unfortunately with water damage there isn’t really much you can do. If your phone is still under warranty you could try taking it to Apple and see if they’ll repair it.
Michael Klements There is no official apple store in my country, and even though I have the warranty card I guess it will be useless. I have been an iphone user for the last 6 years, and I have always been satisfied until now. This is such a major issue and this should be highlighted more
Yes, it is frustrating when you know that the phone wasn't submerged. The trouble is that water resistance is quite complex and depends on both the submerged depth and the duration, both of which are difficult to measure on the actual device. So Apple provides a level of water resistance but they don't guarantee it. You'll also see that they always use the words "water-resistant" rather than "waterproof".

Thanks for the video! My phone charges a little enough for the apple logo to come on ,then immediately flashes green and turns off. Anyone know why this happens? I left it in my pocket when going into the ocean and noticed it after 10 minutes.
There is probably a short in the charging port (salt buildup or water). Try cleaning it out with a cotton bud and some isopropyl alcohol. If that doesn't work then it might be the battery that is giving up.

my OG Iphone SE (2016) works great except the battery life. But Apple said they'd only replace the battery ($49) if they fix the water damage for $200. The phone shuts off when ambient temps reach the 50s and the colder it is, the likelier it will shut off. The phone also doesn't turn on if the phone is too cold. Now I'm either getting the iPhone 12 mini or Pixel 5a. I'm mostly concerned about overall longevity of the phone especially battery life.

I'm planning to buy iPhone X used and i wanted to basically check if everything is working totally fine. So i did watch a lot of videos on UA-cam of checking this and that. But i was wondering if i could just take the iPhone and show it to the Apple service centre and ask them to check everything and run all types of tests over it. So will they do it or not and also what the might ask me to pay. Thank you.

Hi Piyu. Although the newer iPhones are advertised as being water resistant, this doesn't mean that you should intentionally submerge them and they're not designed for underwater videos and photos. Apple don't generally replace or repair water damaged iPhones. If you do have the option then go with a replacement, repairs don't always pick up all of the problems and some issues may only show up after a few months.

hi, I usually listen to music in the shower and nothing happens but today after i got out the screen was pressing buttons itself and then eventually it completely turned black. It still makes noise and I checked the water damage indicator and it was white. I have an xs max. Any thoughts?
Phones don’t do well with high humidity either. You might want to take it in to Apple if it’s under warranty. If not then you could attempt to open it up yourself to see the other indicators, but you’d damage the water protection in the process.

I would avoid spraying anything into the phone. The phone is pretty well sealed, so the water doesn't really have anywhere to go. All you'll be doing is moving it around in the phone and possibly damaging more components. The best would probably be to open it up and dry it out properly if it's still working.

You should be able to tell by the seal on the phone, if it opened up relatively easily then it has probably been repaired before. But yes, if the sticker is missing then there’s also a good chance that that is a replacement screen.
hi so i play music in the shower usually but today some water spilled onto it and the audio on my phone was muffled, but I got it out and my phone was working fine but now I just went to turn it on and it wont turn on at all so I have it in rice right now and hopefully it turns back on but I just wanted to know if anyone thinks my phone is damaged or not?
I think some moisture from antibacterial wipes got into my phone after using them (just a precaution with corona) and the other day my phone screen went a bit dodgy and had a green line but now it’s not there at all and everything is working normally???

I went to the beach with my iPhone x yesterday and the charging isn’t working properly now I restarted my phone and took out all the stuff in the charging port which I was surprised there was a lot but now it can beraly charge and is extremely slow and doesn’t work almost at all. I only took a few water shots on the shore of the waves my phone did get super wet but it was not even a meter deep water.i used a needle to pick out the dust in the charging port and I can’t also seem to find the water damage strip thing anywhere
There may be corrosion on the lightening port terminals. Try wiping the inside of the port with the point of a cotton bud and some rubbing alcohol.

hi, I dipped my phone on to the pool then it shut down suddenly. I dried it using the rice method it did open after 1 day, but I let it sit there for almost another 1 day before I charged it. It was basically fine on the first few 1 hour I think while charging, but then when I pulled out the charger the screen went black but it still runs. I'm afraid that the screen is broken and wouldn't be able to afford this. What would the possible reasons why my screen went black suddenly?

Because you plugged the charger in it and it got contacted with remaining water in it causes your phone screen to go black I blew it

so i dropped my phone in the bathtub but quickly took it out and i used this tiktok sound that got the water out of the sound speakers and it worked i saw some of the water getting out but i’m not sure if it’s perfectly fine what do you think?
If everything is still functioning after a few days then it's probably still ok. Leaving it in a bag of desiccant (or rice) overnight will help to absorb any remaining moisture in the buttons, switches and ports.
I dropped my phone in seawater, I turned it off immediatley and forgot abt it for hours, when I turned it on again I had forgotten abt the seawater thing and everything went green. I turned it off again and let it sit for 24 hours. when I took the sim card out during hour 23 I think, I couldn't see any light at all. I used a flashlight but I couldn't see any red or white. is it completely dead?
If your phone starts acting up after coming in contact with water (seawater is the worst) then its likely water damaged and could be dead. If you're unsure of the phones condition you could try opening it up yourself or taking it to Apple to asses (if its still under warranty). You might find that opening it up, disconnecting the battery and allowing it to completely dry out saves the phone, although this is quite a slim chance.

I cracked my 11 pro max that I was leasing and I had apple care so I got it swapped out . When I went to my phone carrier to return the phone they said the liquid indicator was removed!
The replacement displays often don't have liquid indicators on them. I'm surprised that even the genuine Apple replacement didn't have one on it though.
I’m too scared to do this, but I dropped it in water but took it out immediately and dryer it but the. The sound was weird on videos, I blowed the little holes at the bottom that produced the sound but then after a few minutes it would keep sounding fuzzy. Do you know is this is the water? You’ve probably got water in the speaker. You can get the speaker replaced, you won’t need to get a new phone if everything else is still working.

Try cleaning the sim card contacts, it might just be a bit of dirt if you're lucky.

Is it possible that one part of the indicator is white and the other is red? Or when the water touch the indicator, the indicator become fully red ?
The indicator is absorbent, so typically even a small amount of water will turn the whole indicator red.

Voice is too soft compared to the music. I cant understand what youre saying and have to turn up the volume only to be blasted by loud music seconds later.
Mine is white but the very, very tip appears to be redish, pink, does that mean it won’t be covered under iPhone warranty? I dropped mine in water, it worked fine for about 40 minutes, and now although Siri works and the display looks completely fine the screen isn’t responsive at all.
If your phone is still under warranty then it's worth trying to take it in and see what they say. If there is any sign of water on the indicator or on any of the other internal indicators then they probably won't repair it under warranty.
The stickers don’t mean everything. That’s why they keep trying to seal them up. Naturally these stickers may redden with time or condensation. So if Apple can’t guarantee this phone was deliberately dropped theyll cover it. If they think they can they’ll ask you to pay for it or you’ll admit it. Apple has an extremely high Margin on their products. Meaning the phones not worth no where anywhere what you paid. So customer care is a priority. They do try to take care of the customers.
AppleCare or Apple Store. They will fix a lot of things they shouldn’t fix. Or stuff that most companies would say no too. Two reasons. My 3,500 computer isn’t worth 3,500 on widows plat form. And a 1 thousand dollar iPhone is around 180 bucks to make. They have loyalty and reliability. But they charge for that. Short story take it in. See what they say. They already got your money. Lol
If you bought their most expensive computer today. It’s almost 10 grand. A set of wheels for it is $700. That means the wheels on that computer cost almost as much as the tires on my BMW. They aren’t gonna question much. You paid up front and didn’t know it. Now if this was Nokia or Samsung they’d probably shut you down faster than you could say please. But point is you kinda already paid for it

Are the indicators red? Unfortunately, while they say its water resistant, they still don't cover any form of water damage under warranty. I assume this is because its difficult for them to determine how the damage happened, the iPhone may have been submerged deeper or for longer than it was rated for.

My iphone X got really wet while I was delivering pizza on the scooter in the rain… When I turn it on, it says “face id not available”, the sim operator says “…” but never finds the line… after 5-10 minutes it overheats and restarts… What happened? Do you think I have to change the battery, the charging port or the motherboard?

My phone fell in the water but was working fine after 40 minutes, then all of a sudden it went into an apple logo loop and then stopped working. I put it in a rice bag for 12 hours and now everything works except its just a blacked out screen. But every other thing works fine, can you help me please?
Sometimes water gets into the phone and its not enough to damage it immediately but eventually the water or water vapour damages the components. Try opening the phone up, unplugging the battery and allowing it to dry for a few days while open. Can you still feel it vibrate and sound if you press the buttons and plug it in to charge?
@@MichaelKlements I can feel the phone vibrate when plugging it in and can feel the screen touch sensor when I swipe the screen but my screen is completely black.Does this mean my phone has water damage? I can't tell the difference in the indicator. But it did do it after it feel in the bathroom sink with running water.

It depends on the particular model but yes there is usually more than 1. The common locations for these stickers is near the earpiece, near the lightning port, on the logic board near the battery terminal and then in the sim tray as shown.

Has your screen been replaced previously? The replacements often don't have these indicators pre-installed.
my lci is white on my red iphone 11 but I still get green lines on my iPhone and sometimes my screen would glitch and flicker and then go back to normal.... I've turned it off multiple times and left it alone and also reset it please help

Is this the only water indicator or there is some more inside?
There are usually two more inside the iPhone as well, but this is the only one visible without opening the iPhone up. One is inside near the battery connector and the other is inside near the earpiece.
Michael Klements thanks. My Face ID stopped working and can't be set up again. Most likely water got inside via earpiece as one day I had "fog" on the front camera. However my sim lot sensor isn't red. Hopefully Vodafone warranty will sort this out but if they look inside i might have a problem.

No. Once it has turned red once, it will stay red even when dry again.

How can you tell if water damage has made its way into the charger port?
There is another indicator near the charging port, but you'll need to remove the display to access it.
It will say “don’t charge there is water in charging port” if it’s fucked
My indicator is silver and everything works in my phone but it doesn't read the damn sim! I turn my phone off for a few hours then it reads the sim buy after a few minutes it doesn't read no more

Hi Sarah,
It sounds like your sim card is not making good contact with the tray terminals. Try cleaning the gold contacts on your sim with some rubbing alcohol. If that doesn't work then you may need to look at getting a new sim. Most providers will give you a new one for free, or quite cheaply.

Hey Mike, My iPhone X fell in the water and the upper half of the screen isn't working and I checked for water damage the strip is white. Does that mean the screen needs replacement?
It would be that a drop or knock has partially dislodged a connector or damaged the screen, or it may be water damage. If the phone is still under warranty then take it to Apple to asses. If not then you could try open the phone up and check the other internal indicators around the ear piece and lightning port.

About 1 to 2 minutes my phones upper slide was on rainy side so it was some water in camera that I show....my camera working normal as before it is bt I am unable to set face id...showing higher lower nd not in frame and some blurry image I m showing so it will be automatically done as before or I have to do smtg for face id reset....
Your vocal volume is too low and the phone hold music makes it impossible to hear you without adjusting volume! Other than that it was helpful.

So I went swimming with my phone thinking nothing would happen but when I got out Face ID was not working everything else was fine it was just the Face ID and I was doing research and people said it was water damage is this true?
If the problem started right after swimming with your phone then it’s quite likely. Water damage can vary, from a little getting in around the speaker and damaging a single component (like the FaceID sensor) to a lot getting in through the SIM card tray and destroying the logic board.

No, it won’t change back to white when dried out or left in the sun. The dye layer turns the absorbent paper layer white and this is irreversible.
Odd question.. I was outside working on my car tonight and it suddenly started to pour rain. Amidst the scramble to cover everything I realized my phone was still on my car playing music, and it was plugged in... It was working fine when I grabbed it, immediately unplugged it, and though audio was a little muted, it seemed normal when I turned the music off(inside now). I dried it off, set it down and walked away, came back a little later and it was unresponsive, a little warm still and making an odd, almost inaudible high pitched noise that stopped a few seconds later. I pulled the sim and let it sit for a while, the lci is still white, but the phone is still unresponsive a few hours later... I am going to wait overnight and most of the day tomorrow, but what do you think is the matter? If the lci is white it would likely mean no water damage right? Just freaking out a little as I have some important work for some finals I still need to take on there. Thanks!

It keeps saying liquid has been detected and I looked there is no liquid and I power off my phone and power it back on then it’s fine till like the next day
There might be something (dirt, debris or water) stuck in the charger port. Try cleaning it out with a compressed air canister

Yes, it'll have a similar indicator in the sim card tray and sometimes another one around the earpiece. All iPhones and iPods manufactured since 2006 have moisture indicators somewhere inside them.
While washing my hands with soap dispenser, few drops fell on my phone speaker, I immediately cleaned it with water. It was good, then came call. the phone vibrates and screen fluctuated. Slowly the phone blacked out. I kept on getting calls. answered using AirPods. Iphone that I use is Iphone 10Xs Max. Any solution for this?

Got my new iPhone XR slightly wet while typing now I can’t use the bottom ( no emojis, can’t swipe up to unlock, can’t save/ post photos took on Snapchat basically anything that requires pressing a button on the bottom of my screen)
It sounds like water may have seeped in under the edge and damaged the sensor strip at the bottom of the screen using for those swiping gestures.

Water damage is a difficult one to fix. If the phone isn't still under warranty then you could open it up and try properly drying it out and see if that helps. If it doesn't then you could try replacing the display assembly, if the issue with with the actual sensor then this should fix it.

I fixed it by placing inside the container with full of rice and left it near my radiator.. and it worked!! Only thing is my Face ID no longer work!!

Water damage generally shows up as hardware glitches, speakers not working, screen flickering or going black, buttons not working. It's unlikely that water damage has made your phone sluggish unless it has somehow affected the battery performance.

Probably not if it was just a small spill and you wiped it off. Water damage issues usually arise when the phone is completely submerged or if there is damage to the seal around the display.
I jumped into my pool with the phone in my pocket for at least 30 seconds. Checked the SIM indicator and it is still white.

I don’t think you’ll be able to replace it without it being obvious. I’ve never seen replacement stickers which look close to what the original Apple ones look like.

No not necessarily, it just indicates that some moisture has gotten inside your phone. Sometimes enough moisture gets into the sim tray to turn the indicator red without actually damaging the iPhone. A red indicator doesn't guarantee that the hone won't work but a phone which doesn't work and has a red indicator won't be covered under warranty.

This is probably because the display has already been replaced at some stage. The replacements generally don't have moisture stickers on them.

Isn’t this phone supposed to be water proof??? I bought this phone because it said waterproof in water for 30 min. I took it to the pool to shoot a very short underwater video, after watching other videos of ppl doing it with the same phone. After 1 time my phone is all messed up now. It wont turn on normally. The screen works because it turned on once normally, but now it keeps shutting on and off by itself. It prompts the apple logo and then the reset phone by connecting it to a computer. Then doesn’t work or reset when i do that. I’m pissed i just paid off this phone. I would have never put it in the water had they not advertised it to be WATERPROOF. ... anyone know how i can fix this or if its even fixable?
Hi SB. Apple don't advertise it as being water proof, they say that it's water resistant. Although there are loads of people who have used their iPhones to take underwater photos and videos, it's not advised to do so. The water resistance on the iPhone is designed to protect it from accidental contact. Depending on the age of the seals and any damage to the edges of the phone or display, the phone might not even survive a minute or two in water. It's also not likely that you'll be able to get a water damaged phone repair, it's usually the logic board which gets damaged.

They do advertise it as waterproof. The freaking Iphone 11 commercial had someone swimming in the ocean with it. My phone literally got water on it from sitting on my kitchen counter. Maybe like 2-3 tablespoons and the screen is black, but everything else works. so annoying when the phone wasn't even submerged.

It could be a number of things but most likely a battery/power problem or an issue with the logic board.

Yes, there are a couple of different stickers placed around the inside of each iPhone. Usually around areas where water can get in, like the earpiece, charger port and sim card tray.

Unfortunately if your iPhone’s logic board gets water damaged there isn’t much you can do to fix it.
