Is there a water truck or some other means of filling them? Or are you relying on rain water? Is there an option in the future to drill your own well or would that even be worth while? With no running water, do you have an outhouse or a composting toilet?

There is a water truck on the island, but it is used for fire safety and takes its water from a pond for fire training so it has a scummy reputation. We could drill a well, the closest neighbours well is 200’ deep and fracked, so we are hoping not to have to go down that path. A large number of other properties on the far side of the island can’t drill wells do to the type of ground and only rely on rainwater (all being larger homes and cabins) so we feel we should be good with rainwater catchment.
As of this video we did not have running water, however (spoiler alert) :) we do now. We have an outhouse that was built before we bought and has a very large holding area. We do have a conversation (debate) over the idea of a composting toilet, but unsure what our future holds.

@@OnIslandOffGrid what are the negative points from your stand point on the composting toilet? I know many people swear by them.

It’s mostly to do with the size of system and having to empty it. I’d prefer a system that you remove the “waist” compose from outside. Phoebe’s not sold on the idea do to having to import peat moss or coconut husks. At the moment our local municipal government does not recognize a composting toilet as a plumbing system in a house so it would have to be outside and the outhouse works fine. We are hoping local governments recognize tiny houses and composting toilets very soon as it’s what’s needed to move forward in these areas. Also Vancouver Island who governs this Island is still at this moment pumping untreated black/grey water out into the ocean. They are in the middle of building a water treatment plant, but many years later. So they need to catchup on the new systems.
