The barebow class is realy amazing. Been shooting barebow on my own a few years ago and this archers really got my respect for the amazing performance. It is not easy to shoot that small groups with a barebow. Thanks to Lancaster Archery for giving these archers a stage at the classics. I think there is more to come from barebow class. Way to go....
Of all the forms in archery competitions, bare bow (both women and men’s) are my favorite to watch. The variations in scores - from 11’s to 4’s in one end, and seeing the scores between archers sift radically between four ends - makes the matches exciting to watch. I would love to see a long bow or one piece recurve competition added at some point. And of course, the women’s purse should be equal with the men’s - both finals were riveting. Congratulations to all the archers!
I used to shoot a compound YEARS ago, then dropped out of archery all together for 26 years. One day I got the itch to get back into it, but I wanted to try a longbow because I'd always loved them from the old 50's Robin Hood series, but had never shot one. I posted on an archery site requesting if someone would let me try a longbow, got a response, and met a great group of guys with many different longbows for me to try. They had a target set up at 50' and handed me a bow and arrow. My first shot and you couldn't have put it closer to center unless you walked up and stuck the arrow in by hand. The bow just felt so natural in my hand it was like I just had to think about where I wanted the arrow to hit, and it did, I was a pretty fair shot with the compound, but that even freaked me out when I did that with a totally unfamiliar bow. Although I had never shot it before that moment, it just had a feel that said this was natural, this was familiar. I also like longbows because they are so simple - stick and string, nothing to get out of whack, nothing to get out of tune.
I competed against John Dillinger and Jeff Roy at the Utah Open last December. Both are great guys and competitors. I think Jeff's nerves got to him in this tournament because he is an amazing shooter. I've only met John once but he is very friendly and gave me some great advice. Maybe one day there will be three Utah shooters on the stage. Great tournament Lancaster!
