This is exactly the kind of tutorial I needed - quick but not too quick, it gave me what I needed to believe I could build my own fence. Thanks!
Awesome, glad you found it helpful!
You just saved me thousands. My property is 10,500 square feet and contractors wanted to charge me between $7,000 and $60,000. I'm going to do it myself. Thank you.
Awesome, good luck on your fence!
I built my own and saved a lot of money. Its very easy if you take your time. I eould suggest watching several utube videos and writing a few notes.Good Luck DIY
Glad you were able to build your own and save some cash!
I was wanting to mount my rails in between the posts. Using the rail brackets versus toe nailing is a great idea. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Seriously one of the best tutorial videos I've seen. We can totally do this! Thanks!
Awesome, so glad you found it helpful!
I LOVE IT!! The cedar is definitely nicer then the pressure treated. My parents are looking to build a privacy fence. This video was the 1st in my homework..Thank You. God Bless
Good luck!
Looks great… I need to do this as well as a million other things lol. But first I’ll start here
You have a really good voice for this.
Thanks for the compliment! Appreciate it.
Great tutorial!
Thank you!
Thanks for the video! How far apart should the wood panels be?
We spaced fence posts 8 foot apart on center.
How did you handle the sloping landscape to still make the wood support beams fit into the bracket? We have much steeper slopes in our backyard and I'm debating if use of brackets would be feasible. Since I'm assuming the bracket needs to be level to the ground, how did you fit a support beam into it at an angle? Did you have to saw the edge of the support beam to make it sit flush into the bracket?
For the rails on uneven ground, we cut them at an angle so they sit into the bracket. Depending on how steep your slope is, the use of brackets may not make sense. In that case, you could just screw the rails in directly to the posts with angled screws.
Great video. Money in my pocket
You and me both!
Trying to figure out what the minimum spacing you want between each picket is I can find anywhere inch up to 4 inch spacing but I don't want to inch gap between my pickets I want them to be as tight as they can be without affecting the swelling during the season looking for a recommended minimum really don't want to go anything bigger than a half inch gap or can I put them butted up side by side
If you're purchasing cedar pickets from Home Depot or Lowe's or something, you don’t need to install the pickets with any spaces in between them. The cedar fence pickets will shrink overtime, as much as 1/4" per board. So at installation, you'll start with "no gap", but it will grow overtime to 1/4" or so.
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it
Did u run into the pickets slanting. If so how does one avoid that. The fence looks pretty straight but it started slanting
To avoid having the pickets slant on any slopes, you want to step up or down the pickets between each post (which is what we did on the slope we encountered, which you can see at the end of the video). Something that can help a lot in keeping the pickets level is to run a mason line between the fence posts as you attach them. Make sure that line is level and then you can line up the top of the pickets with that line to keep them straight. Make sure your first picket is nice and level. You don’t need to install the pickets with any spaces in between them.
Thank you for the video. Were these pickets 6 ft tall? And where did you put the top and middle brackets for the rails? I saw in comment below that bottom rail is 6” to 1 ft from ground.
Yes, all of the pickets we used were 6 feet tall. The bottom rail was 6" to 1 foot from the ground and the top rail was 6" inch to 1 foot from the top of the picket. The middle one was simply the measured middle between the two other rails.
Do I need those metal brackets for ready made 6x8 panels?
Great question. Most of the time, no you wouldn't need a bracket for pre-made panels. But it totally depends on what type of ready made fence panel you purchase. Check the instructions included with your panels to make sure!
How far from bottom of the post to you install the hanger bracket?
The bottom fence rail should be installed about 6 inches to 1 foot from the ground.
So what size screws?
Hi! Where did you get those brackets from?
Home Depot. Linked here: rstyle.me/+IE5EURF8AqBZ1XSfaW9WXw
was it roughly one bag of cement per post?
Are you supposed to leave a gap between the pickets?? Or are they supposed to be touching eachother??

How deep do the posts go into the ground? How many bags of cement do you use per post?
Usually 2ft down with an 8ft pressure treated 4x4 post and roughly a 60 lb back of concrete. Give yourself a little extra if you dig up rocks in your holes for fill.
What are the brackets called? Never seen them before n where from? Home depot?
They are called Fence Rail Brackets - here's a link: rstyle.me/+IE5EURF8AqBZ1XSfaW9WXw
Does is matter if you leave the finish facing on the inside or outside if you’re property ??
Typically the finish facing is on the outside of the property, but it is up to you!
What kind of wood did you guys use and where did you get them?
We used cedar wood for the planks and pressure treated posts. We got them both at The Home Depot.
How far apart were the fence posts ? Thanks
8-feet...The posts were spaced so that the 8-foot rails fit in between without cutting.
Maybe a dumb question but do you mind if I ask how much the materials cost in total? Looking to have my moms backyard fence repaired still has door and lock in tact oddly but when we went to visit
out of the country much of her fence was stolen by the house sitter smh. I am looking to hire someone with the appropriate tools to repair her fence but I want it to be a surprise so they would have to begin around 4:30p. Next question would be also just estimate if possible how long does this job take to complete total hours?
The costs for this are extremely dependent on the exact size of your fence and the prices of lumber are fluctuating a lot right now. I can tell you that the costs to build a fence like this are about 3x now what they were when we did it a year or two ago. The time it would take to build a fence like this is very dependant again on the size of your fence and the skill of the labor. It took Logan along with his dad (both experienced) 2 and half full working days to build two fences on our property.
How long did it take you to build this?
Two days. The first day we did posts with concrete and the next day did the rails and pickets.
How long are the deck screws? They look like 2.5"?
All of these screws were 1 5/8" deck screws
My old wooden fence that I am trying to "refresh" has some flat metal pieces (now almost eaten by rust) at the base and some flat thin steel, triangular spear looking whatever they are called, accessories. Why don't you mention them in the video, what are they for, are they needed?
Thank you for your help in explaining the purpose of those things.
These sound like old fence posts bases. I don't use them I just grade the concrete away from the posts to help water run off.
@@MakingManzanita Thank you. Now I understand.
The one thing missing from this video is the one thing that is holding me back from doing mine DIY: How do you make sure that the posts are perfectly vertical while the cement is drying? You made reference to lawn stakes, But I cannot even picture that. Does anyone here know of another video that shows what that looks like?
How did you measure to find out how much material you needed? What was the math?
To figure out how many fence pickets you'll need, you can measure the distance that the fence will span and divide by 5.5 inches. Add 10% extra to account for waste.
To figure out the number of posts you'll need, measure the distance that the fence will span and divide by 8' because the fence posts should be no more than 8 feet apart.
On each fence post, you'll need brackets and 3 rails in between posts.
Are the fence posts 10 ft tall or 8 ft?
The posts are 8 ft and the pickets are 6 feet. Approximately 1.5ft to 2 feet of the post is buried in the ground.
Why was the post not stabilize before pouring cement?
You could totally stabilize the post before pouring the cement in the hole.
@@MakingManzanita could you share how that was done?
I tend to use bars to hold it in place for it to be leveled.
How long did this take?
The fence took us a few days to build. You would want one day to built the fence posts and set them in concrete, then you'll need to wait 24 hours to dry. The next day you could do the rails and pickets.
The links in the description is not correct.
Not sure what happened there! Thanks for the heads up. I've adjusted.
How many ft are your fence post apart
Our posts are 8ft on center apart. Perfect for 2x4x8 rails. Always keep them evenly spaced if you have to go shorter. One side of this fence was 18ft so instead of 8ft I did 6ft to keep the spaces between the posts even.
What was the cost of this project thinking of doing this.
The costs for this are extremely dependent on the exact size of your fence and the prices of lumber are fluctuating a lot right now. I can tell you that the costs to build a fence like this are about 3x (if not more) now what they were when we did it a couple of year ago.
Why not use nails instead? And did you use any kind of weather proofing?
Screws are preferred for extra longevity for your wooden fence. We used outdoor screws and the posts are pressure treated wood, while the cedar wood will age naturally.
Why not galvanized post?
We like the way the wood posts look better, so we went with that.
How much did all the material cost ?
The cost to build a fence varies greatly with materials and the style and type of the fence you choose, but for us this has typically been about $22 per foot for a 6' privacy fence with DIY installation, of course.
However, we haven't built a fence for a couple of years since the prices of lumber have increased greatly, so it would probably be more than that now.
Tfs
You're welcome!
Do you remember how much thos cost?
The cost to build a fence varies greatly with materials and the style and type of the fence you choose, but for us this has historically been about $22 per foot for a 6' privacy fence with DIY installation, of course.
However, we haven't built a fence for few years since the prices of lumber have increased greatly, so it would probably be more (3x or more) than that now.
Im gonna build this soon, my neighbors keep calling the cops on me having rabbits in my garage. It's so annoying. He yelled at the little old lady on the other side of him the other day too for doing a fire to burn some brush. He needs a hobby.
Good luck on your fence!
So were not even going to cover the masonry line that seemed to be instrumental in making it look professional? Off to find a more detailed video
🤔 2 feet deep for the post, not too sure that's a good idea.
Measure twice plan twice cut once cuss alot
Shouldnt need state aproval for a damn fence.
Those who would trade there freedom for security deserve niether. Jefferson
"it gave us a lot of privacy" literally has 2nd story neighbors windows looking into your yard
Building a two story fence is really unreasonable.
