I can't believe he dealt with that pain for so long. Appendicitis is no joke. They tried sending me home from the ER saying it was just a UTI that is barely there. But I was basically screaming in pain. Nothing worked, not the morphine or dilatin. The nurse who was helping the patient next to me came over and told my mon to fight them until they give me a CAT scan. They finally did and then I had surgery.
I've never had Appendicitis but Gallbladder issues were bad enough. The pain was so horrible I'd be in tears when I had an attack. Thankfully I was taken seriously and was able to have it removed in 2014...I haven't had any issues since.
Karan's story reminds me of the Dozier School for Boys, a "reform school" in the 1950s and 1960s where the boys were regularly and severely beaten, physically and [word UA-cam doesn't like that rhymes with "textually"] abused, and prevented from contacting their parents. I think they were also kidnapped in the middle of the night to be shipped off to the facility. At least 81 children died and were buried there, and their parents were lied to about the circumstances. It's a relief that Karan eventually got treated, but it's completely inhumane how long they ignored his health and how they treated him in general.
It seems like all of these child reform programs are abusive, Doctor Phil's ranch is another example. I think the idea is inherently abusive most of these kids need a stable home and therapy or at its most extreme rehabilitation in jail, not to be dragged against their will to some strange place with no accountability to the outside world .

The "staff" don't set a good example, or even an example of how not to behave; they just terrorize these kids into submission. I went to a wilderness program I Utah & I’ll be honest, it’s absolutely saved my life. It was an amazing program called Aspiro, that being said it was a program for 18yr+ so very different than the wilderness programs for adolescents no one was forced or gooned there.
It’s a shame there are so many bad actors in the community spreading information about punishments they got for being delinquents acting like it’s what the whole program does or even straight up lying about what goes on there. My cousin went to one of those, she claimed it traumatized her but now has a neck tattoo and a child and she’s only 18.
