if you're good with small parts, try out the Queen Tackle switch blades. i recommend the large in black. on calm sunny days or during the winter i use the reg size in back. theyre just the blade with a cross bar attachment. if you have a lot of jigs, they're great to have handy! To close the tabs completely, use slotted pliers, very gently, squeezing from tip to tab. I now use a metal hole punch to put a hole about half an inch above each tab. i use round nose pliers or needle nose plies to close my tabs completely.
I use 4-5 inches of black, brown, white shoelace as a chatterbait trailer. Cheap as, and gets bit like mad. My Grandfather used to use them fishing walleye up here in Ontario fishing on his worm harnesses, jigs and rigs.
Thanks for the seminar Randy. I have experimented quite a bit with trailers and really like the spunk shad. Give the chatterbait a nice hunting action.

Don, I was in the same boat you are as far as not having the confidence in chatterbaits. I just never really understood what all the fuss was about. But, after a buddy of essentially badgered me to death about it, I locked it in my hand and just put some time in it. It quickly became my absolute favorite lure…period. I fish a Chatterbait more than anything else and have more confidence in it than any other bait. Randy’s two retrieves he demonstrated are the same two that I use, and you can take it to the bank that those are the best to use. Snapping the reel, while at the same time giving the line a split second of slack, makes the bait dart off to one side and brother it is deadly. I get so many bites right after that reel snap to slack, they just can’t stand it. The hopping retrieve is killer in deeper water when the fish are not quite as active. My pb came fishing grass at night on a Chatterbait, it’s just about all I’ll throw at night at this point. Just stick it in your hand and have patience and you’ll see for yourself.
A little tweek on your skirts you might want to try is cristal flash. You'll find it in fly supplies, 3 or 4 strands say in your swim jig or chatter bait skirt gives some shimmer. But don't over do it. Keeping your hooks ultra sharp is big in my book. I sharpen all my own hooks to hang on my thumb nail. Love the video!
@@clay7514 four hand poured worms, use one strip of the silver tinsel after pouring clear for the main body. then laminate over it by topping it with black. you've just made your own "Magic Worms". some tinsels don't do well with heat. so the Crystal Flash OR Flashabou, is brighter in color spectrum underwater and will last longer.
a keep a diamond coated rat tail hook file in the boat and a key shaped version on my key ring at all times. If the hook isn't brand new, or is cheap, I always do a quick touch up before it touches the water.
@@clay7514 If it's a plastic than yes. I myself prefer the clear but do use the blue, green and orange as well . Just don't over do it. Not that I use a trailer much but have tied hair (sparse) on a few trailer hooks as well. I tie my oun trout flies as well.
Love these videos man. The “big fish hop” from the jig video helped me understand why I was getting so many bites on the first hop instead of the fall and I couldn’t figure out why. As soon as a heard jigs and jerksbaits where your two favorite ways to catch um. I knew you’d have some good stuff for my style. As those are my favorites as well. I use the same jig rod too. Best bottom contact rod on planet earth.
Another great video. Definitely my go to bait. Gold blade is the deal where I fish! Zman painted blades not holding up like they used to, paint chipping off fast.

Very informative on the Chatter Bait. The Bass in my local 10 acre lake have been hitting the gold blade. The grass exploded in the lake about 2 months ago and the Chatter Bait has worked well. On the flip side is my brother in laws 4 acre pond where a Chatter Bait has never been used, and I can’t buy a bite. I will try some of your tips from this video.
I know it's not a chatterbait, but I have to include this presentation because it's such a realistic presentation. Consider it a finesse version for heavily pressured bass with lock jaw. -I use a Scrounger head with a small Gille Shad. I prefer the stiffer Scrounger lip. Even using a 1/4 head it's also easy to fish deep and slow because the lip causes the rig to swim downward, instead of rising. At the right speeds and rod angle, they can also be fished near the surface and very effective in low light conditions.

Really liking these advanced lessons, Randy...1 a week was a great idea & i look forward to it....👍 here's an interesting bait to try out sometime...original chatterbait head, no skirt with a senko type bait...great action, and gets deeper with ease...ive been playing around with a white yum dinger & white head, and really impressed with the action..that stickbait does some serious dancing
@@roderunnr450 only used it the one time briefly to see the action....not liking it as a fall season bait, as it looks more in the snake/eel family. I'm pretty much using shad and/or bluegill style/color baits....I will definitely add it to the arsenal next spring & summer, with different colors
Yesterday I caught a redfish and some lizard fish on the chatterbait made for the saltwater, with a 5" swim bait (Salt Strong Bomber, Slam Shady white color). I'm just starting to experiment with them in the saltwater and I think they'll be great in certain situations. The ribbon fish really attack them but they're really hard to hook. You might want to get some of the chatterbaits for saltwater, they have a regular looking jig head and no skirt so you could put whatever you want on it. They come in 1/4 oz, 3/8 oz and 1/2 oz and they're stout enough for stronger line than the freshwater versions. I'm pretty sure they'd be good for bass too. I like the 3/8 oz size more than the 1/4 and I haven't tried the 1/2 yet. I think they're going to be good for flounder by using them like a jig in dirty water. This is interesting to me, I appreciate the lessons and the stuff I learn that I can use. So thanks.
sounds good. are they thicker and do they have a slower deeper chatter? I use Jerky "J"s on a naked swim jig using a Switch Blade. As long as i don't over tighten my drag, I never have any problems.
@@secretbassrigs honestly I don't have enough experience with chatterbaits to tell you anything about the differences. I don't fish for bass much, especially now that I moved to the VA Beach area. I fish in the saltwater almost every day. I've had more luck with Strike King Trout Magic underspinners, either under a popping cork or just tied on the end of my leader. Those should be good for bass, and the Redfish Magic spinnerbait is like a big Beetle Spin, you can change the jig and it doesn't have a skirt. They work with any paddle tails or jerk shads or whatever soft plastic and jig head.
Give the big blade chatterbait a try. We use it a lot at night on old hickory. Most folks stick with a spinnerbait or regular chatterbait at night, not many will throw the big blade at night.
"winding down hard" and "not turning your fish around" are really solid advice. if the fish turns itself around anyway, only then will I change direction so it doesnt jump. For me, low gear ratio reels need a little hip turn hook set with the rod while you're cranking down for solid hooksets
I’m old school, and I know you are too, why no trailer hooks on these jigs. So am new to chatter baits (took 12 years off, but I am back again). Anyways, on Buzz, Spinner and Jigs, I used to always use a trailer hook through a piece of clear rubber ring to keep the hook in place. These chatter baits are nothing more than a fancy Jig & Pig.
I enjoy this new, long video format Randy! I love the skirt portion of the seminar. Ive found that paddle tail trailers inhibit the action of the jig in some cases and straight tail like the GY Zaka works the best for me.
I hope that I can break my chatter bait curse, I’ve been fishing a green pumpkin for 3 or 4 weekends and haven’t got a bite on it, but I can put a spinner bait on and catch them left and right.
Great video as always Randy, lovin this new channel. I caught my new PB smallie over the holiday weekend on a chatterbait while fishing on a mixed species lake up in Wisconsin. I always thought of it as more of a largemouth lure but it sure proved me wrong.
I have gotten more bites on the regular Chatterbait, but the hook is easier for them to shake off and that has happened a lot to me. My favorite is the mini Chatterbait.
I do think the blade color makes a big difference and the only time I like a silver blade is during a Shad spawn. I like a black or a gold blade because I’m fishing tannic colored water.
Great lesson randy! Question how do you tie your jerk bait straight to the lure or do you use a swivel? If I tie straight to the lure I get terrible lines twist after an hour or sometimes less. Thanks Randy.
Randy, do you ever use a light/white trailer with a green pumpkin skirt? I catch em pretty good on that quite often. I think it makes it look like a fish with a white belly to them, like a baby bass or gar.
Randy, what's your opinion on the blade being directly connected to the head compared to non ZMAN chatterbaits where it's connected by a split ring? I know a lot of folks say the lure starts up faster being tied directly and that they catch more fish with a ZMAN, but I've caught a fair amount with ones I make using the split ring. Curious on your thoughts. Thanks!

Yes the hog farmer ones are great. Missile baits makes them now. I prefer white or green pumpkin or black blue.

I agree on what you said about the chatterbaits the regular ones are more of a low pitched vibration more natural presentation then the jackhammer

Boot tail SB’s look unnatural to me on a chatterbait unless I rig them upside down. The tail doesn’t float upwards that way.
