    These trucks came with a random array of engine choices, but the V-8s were a 266 (4.4L), a 304 (5.0L), a 345 (5.7L), a 392 (6.4L), or a 401 (6.6L). I can't help but to wish this truck had the 392 or 401, but I'd imagine it's the 345 (which is still a good running engine, but not performance based). Good vidjya though! Always fun!

    As a previous comment suggests, the timing is possibly out, but also has stuck valves, backfiring back through the carby like it is doing would indicate stuck inlet valve igniting the fuel destined to other cylinders.

They we're both pretty much daily drivers back in the day, tough as nails and impossible to kill. This was in the late 80's and earl 90's. When I was a kid I remember family friends driving several of these around as their daily drivers, I specifically remember that the door latch on one truck must have been broken because they’d get in this one particular International pickup and no kidding stretch a rope across their laps to tie the doors together to stay closed! Get a spark tester, sounds like a few spark-plugs aren't shooting out lightning bolts. I bet the spark plug wires have super high resistance! Does it have points or electronic ignition? Distributor cap contacts are probably corroded really bad.

    Very familiar with international's , that's a 345 V8 as u already know , engine is manufactured by Diamond Reo not a lot of hp but good torque and run forever if taken care of . Probably a good tune up would get the ol truck running great , think I heard a small exhaust leak , not sure cause background music was blocking most of the engine noise. It came off trailer with it's own power and after sitting like it has that's a good thing , we owned a 62 or 63 scout which had a slant 4 cylinder, I had a 67 in high school with a 345 , my parents had several travellalls growing up 69 ,with a 345 and a 78 with a 392 C.I. , the 392 was a highway cruiser , did 75 80 mph all day with out breaking a sweat , my dad had his truck which was a 3/4ton crew cab with 8 foot bed 4 deep on the floor would pull a house off foundation in 1st gear ........ internationals were good vehicles for there time , beat the crap out of the competition..... hope u get it going

    • @LifeofLind

      thanks for all the info and the background story, it does seem this thing was a real heavy duty rig!

    Those old IH trucks & Travel All wagons(their answer to the Chevy Suburban)were built like tanks and 4wd versions should have a cast iron transfer case with gears instead of a chain drive inside. Runs 75w-90 gear lube in it, along with front & rear diffs and manual trans. Too bad they used steel that rusted easily for the bodies.
    The 345 V8 they used was no powerhouse but you could not kill them. Ignition was handled by a Prestolite distributor if I recall correctly, standard points/condenser type. I think Ford or Mopar cap/rotor fits these but not sure, been a lot of years! If it leaks oil from the rear main, that is normal as IH used rope seals back then, and, if it stops leaking, check the oil as you're probably out.
    Thanks for a cool video!👍😎

    I was surprised it started from sitting so long, I guess the owner didn't put ethanol gas in it. Since it started, seems like half the battle is already done. The paint color looked like olive drab on my end and not the greyish yellow. Looking forward to the progress on this project as well when you get the time.
    Growing up in farm country in Mississippi, I don't remember ever seeing an International Harvester pickup, but I saw plenty of tractors, we had three before my dad finally gave in and got a John Deere. I did however see the toy IH pickups at the farmers supply stores and in the Sears and JCPenney's Christmas catalogs.

  • @KiwiStag74
    @KiwiStag74 2 роки тому +1

    I reckon you got 6 out of 8 at best that are answering the call at present. It's an even number of cylinders, so it could even be four of eight! Still pulls itself off that trailer ok though, so she's still got some pressure in the ones that are playing ball and the clutch obviously works well too!
    Yep, you got at least a couple of dead leads and maybe a couple of dead plugs too. The way she turned over at first I thought you had a couple of stuck valves, but she wasn't cranking long enough to pick up if she was still doing it later in the vid, but if she was still skipping a cylinder or two on crank and it turns out a valve is stuck, that would be the source of your backfiring, I'm picking. Then again, she's done a few miles, so it might be a burnt or cracked valve or two. Easy enough job to check if they move and free them up if need be. Harder if the valves are all moving and she's still skipping and backfiring. Hope its the easy one!
    I reckon you got it all sorted though. Seen you fix worse! All the best.

      @LifeofLind  2 роки тому

  • @renchjeep

    Make sure the firing order is correct. Someone may have mixed up the first two wires on the left side. 1 and 3 if it's the same firing order as a small block Chevy. Probably the same, as AMC and Chrysler were numbered that way as well. Ford, well, they did stuff differently, and then they circled the problem. LOL. That's a cool old rig, for sure. Not a lot of HP, but I bet the torque numbers are strong, and in the low part of the rev range, just where you want it for a REAL truck! Cool that it's a 4x4. Not sure how rare that 4x4 is, but I see a LOT of these in 2wd configuration, and IH didn't exactly sell a bunch of trucks....so I'd say she's pretty rare. Please update when you get the tune figured out. Oh, that ThermoQuad carb? They work well....when they work! Same as a Rochester QuadraJet in that sense. Love Holley carbs myself, but in your case with the IH, an Edelbrock would probably bolt right up, and work WAY better.

    Hi Dustin,
    I watch a channel called 'Travel Beans' and they had flown to the US to embark on a camper experience, something they do in Europe in their small Volkswagen T4 around the UK and Europe.
    During their visit, their Dearborn camper caught fire whilst driving and went up in flames - Their US dream was over! In their latest video they were looking to make a return and looking to get another camper for their trip and also looking to start their trip somewhere other that Texas, because it's hot as ass!!!
    I suggested in the comments that hitting you up would not be a bad idea. I'll link their latest video so you can see what they are up to, but from a selfish point of view, it would be cool to see two of my favourite channels collaborate on something as I think you could both help each other.

    Sadly soon all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-(
    In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025
    on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Now they want to slow down all the gas station pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime.!!!! (BABBVEN LAWS AND TEBBVEN ORDERS)
