All That She Carried garnered great acclaim on my side of the pond over the last year/year and a half. That is the one that immediately jumps out to me and one I’ve wanted to read in the past. I, unlike Simon, positively adored Laura Cumming’s last book, On Chapel Sands. It was my #1 book, fiction or non-fiction a couple years ago. So while I’m a bit hesitant on the topic, I think I will probably pick up this one because I like her writing and it looks gorgeous. Some People Need Killing is also a possibility. In general, the memoirs are pulling me more than the other books, but absolute hurrah! to have another prize for women!
Interesting what you say about Cummings. I’ve not read anything of hers so will come to it blind. I’m loving the reading so far and am thrilled by the whole concept. Happy non-fiction Reading! 🙏🙏🙏💜💜💜📚📚📚

Ah, this was just what I needed after an endless work day (interrupted by the longlist reveal). What an interesting and varied longlist! I think I’ve read 5-6 already (Thunderclap was special). Quite interested in Wifedom, The Britannias, Intervals, A Flat Place and Young Queens. So maybe those first and then we’ll see what the shortlist brings? Thanks so much for sharing your reactions! @@louisesavidgemuses4135 I have read All That She Carries, The Dictionary People, Doppelgänger, Eve, How to Say Babylon and Thunderclap. They were all good, although I will say that Thunderclap was easily my favorite of the six and one of my favorite reads of 2023.
This was so so good!
I already knew the list before watching, so what was really lovely was seeing the books, how they look, the size, the covers etc.
I'm so excited!! I have about 6 I want to prioritise and I have quite a lot of audible credits, so will start listening to the list ASAP. Really looking forward to seeing your updates as you go.

Hi L and S a joy to listen to too. Re the dictionary book: Simon Winchester's intriguing Surgeon of Crowthorne is also about the creation of dictionary. As for Naomi Klein , she's been interviewed here in NZ lately and talked about being confused wth Naomi Wolf (the feminist and conspiracy theorist) and has consequently received a torrent of abuse.

I put reservations on a few (Doppelganger and how to say babylon before the announcement) and tagged a few others on libby so I don't run out of holds but also don't forget
Most interested in vulture capitalism, code dependent and The Britannias but some others also sound great but my big focus will probably be the short list since I have almost 3 months to read that compared to the 6 weeks to March 27.

I'm curious about Code Dependent too, but the US edition isn't out until June. 😭 I'm keen on the US cover so I think I'll wait to get that one.
Re: Doppelgänger. Naomi Klein (environmentalist, left wing) is often mistaken for Naomi Wolf (newly right wing, also an author).

I had just got How to Say Babylon on audio from my library! Is there anything better than Carribean accents on audiobooks? I really don't think so. I've got an hour to go in my current audiobook and then it's up next, should be able to start it later on today I hope. I've just borrowed All That She Carried on audio, and A Flat Place as an ebook.
Of the books I haven't heard of before, a few are very interesting for me, Intervals isn't out in Australia til May...
