Holiday Reading Review in Italy 2024
I read Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell in October, too, and I loved it!
Isn’t it amazing 🤩
I absolutely love your book reviews, Louise!
Oh thank you! 🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚💛💛💛
So glad the wonderful event that you and Simon co-hosted led you to read this amazing novel!!
Thank you. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience 🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚💛💛💛
📕 🪱 💚
🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚💛💛💛
This feels very special that you got to pick up this book that your son loved so much. And right after spending time with the author, too. So glad to hear that reading it was a special and enjoying moment for you just like it was for your son. Thanks for sharing about it!
My pleasure 😇
Thanks, Louise!🌷I was thinking of reading this novel when it was mentioned during your interview with Susanna Clarke, but now you’ve totally convinced me. York Minster’s gargoyles coming to life?! I’m in!!!😍
Hope you enjoy it! 🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚💛💛💛
Finished Felicia's Journey, yes, it was much like The Collector, a good psychological thriller, but I much prefer his earlier books, a little too much like reading case history. Orbital? I went to a brick and mortar bookstore today, not a single copy, and they never had one. Maybe it will be in a remainder bin in a drug or grocery store near me one day. It would not be the first Booker Prize winner acquired in that manner.😅 Congrats to all the nominees and the winner. James, I'm at the halfway point. Non-fiction reads are costing me money, because they mention other books, I can't believe I paid 10 dollars for an old Muriel Spark read on Kindle, Loitering with Intent, because it was mentioned in Theb Receptionist, An Education at the New Yorker. Oh well, I had only read The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and A Far Cry from Kensington, and Spark comes off as a very generous person in the Janet Groth book.
Oh gosh! I rattled through so many of Muriel Sparks’ novels in my late twenties, loved her 🤩
I am definitely picking this up again, since I started it several years ago and never finished it. You, Simon, and Susanna have totally inspired a revisit…I so enjoyed your Women’s Prize conversation on Sunday, and look forward to your 2025 calendar of author and Women’s Prize events. You and Simon are the best team - delightful, interesting, knowledgeable, and so thoroughly prepared with all you do. I encourage anyone who missed the live stream to purchase a ticket to watch the replay…you will be glad you did.❤📖📚
Thank you so much for your lovely compliments, I’m thrilled that you enjoyed it 🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚💛💛💛
I love seeing young people reading big chunky books. Interesting that your dyslectic son was not intimidated by the size and kept on reading.
Absolutely 👍
I also stalled on this for a long time, then when you and Simon showed the 20th anniversary edition, I went out and bought the paperback edition. I'm 150 pages in and loving it. ❤. It's such a lovely cover too.
So pleased that you are enjoying it 🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚💛💛💛
I've put off reading this book for years because it seems like such a massive commitment. You make it sound like it's worth the time. Plus, I loved Piranesi.
I really think it is: it’s exceptional storytelling 🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚💛💛💛
I read this when it was new (ish - I read it in paperback) and it's still one of my all time favourite books. I was very interested in what you said about reading it like a child and trusting the author completely. That hadn't occurred to me, but you're absolutely right. I hear a lot of people say they skipped the footnotes, but I thought they were the best bits.
So glad you have such affection for this book 🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚💛💛💛
Now here is a book I have been meaning to read forever and that is such a lovely edition. 🎉 thank you 🙏 , Louise. It is added to my TBR list 😂 Totally sold and ordered 🎉😂
Hope you enjoy it! Please let me know what you think when you get to it 🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚💛💛💛
Yes 🎉 I will Louise.
💕😀xx thanks Louise. I have a reserved a copy from my library. Have read and REALLY enjoyed Piranesi.🥰
Wonderful! Hope you enjoy it as much as I did 🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚💛💛💛
I heard Tracey Chevalier discuss some of her books at Daunts in London years ago. All her books are incredible especially those about tapestry, embroidery, quilts and freedom from slavery. Daniel Mason's book has been on my short list for ages- really looking forward to having time to read it.
Really enjoying this series and can’t wait for your rankings!
Glad you like them! 🙏🙏🙏💛💛💛📚📚📚
I look forward to the Booker ranking video. Halloween is over, but the biography I'm reading on Edna St. Vincent Millay mentioned she kept a volume of Sir Walter Scott's Letters on Demonology and Witchcraft by her bedside, so I started reading that on Kindle, as if I did not already have enough non-fiction reads for the month. I have almost finished Felicia's Journey by Willlam Trevor, thanks for the recommendation. I should finish James soon, you are correct Simon, it does read fast. Thank you both.❤
Hope you’re enjoying Felicia’s Journey 😊🙏🙏🙏💛💛💛📚📚📚
I’m hugging little bullied Simon …. I was too but also was a turd at other points. Childhood is a pendulum like that i think
Absolutely 😢
Bittersweet- I think this is y’all’s last book & I adore this series of videos - but this was my last read of the ones I’ve read ( I’ve not read Held or Creation Lake 😳) and perhaps it’s a bit of recency bias??? But it is the one i think about most ; that haunts me most . I loved it , but loved all the ones I read especially a particular 3 this one included. Blahdiggityblah appreciate you two as always 📖🪱💚
Thank you 🙏🙏🙏💛💛💛📚📚📚
Thanks, Louise and Simon!🌷I don’t think this is the book for me, as I’m not so keen on reading about a mice plague😱. Louise, Priam visiting Achilles in his tent to beg for the body of Hector is for me too one of the most memorable and moving literary texts I’ve ever read. I think it is the sharing of grief between enemies, that makes it so poignant. You are absolutely right, this is the way forward towards the solution of today’s horrific conflicts.
Thank you for the validation- I couldn’t agree more about the Priam scene 🙏🙏🙏💛💛💛📚📚📚
These parallel reads have been so interesting!
So pleased you have found them so 🙏🙏🙏💛💛💛📚📚📚
I love this parallel read! I enjoy following along. And I look forwforward to your winner prediction! Thank you for sharing!
You are so welcome! 🙏🙏🙏💛💛💛📚📚📚
I picked up Safekeep based on your previous video and am absolutely loving it so far. Might have to get to this one, too!
So pleased to know that. Thanks for letting me know 🙏🙏🙏💛💛💛📚📚📚
Hi Louise and Simon! I haven’t watched this video yet (and will come back to it later), but I’ve just watched your live interview with Susanna Clarke and wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed it!😍 Since I read the novel I’d been wondering whether Piranesi’s world only existed in his mind, so I was very happy to hear a member of the audience asking Susanna Clarke a question about it. I think Thunderclap was the perfect gift for her. I look forward to the next WP Bookclub meeting😊📚
Thank you so much for letting us know. It’s so hard to tell how it might come across online 🙏🙏🙏💛💛💛📚📚📚
Oh gosh I hope this wins, it was the 2nd book on the longlist that I read and it is still the standout for me
🙏🙏🙏💛💛💛📚📚📚
This was also the final book on the shortlist for me, and I appreciate it even more after the video. It wasn’t my favorite on the list, but I would be happy if it won.
We’ll soon know 🫢🙏🙏🙏💛💛💛📚📚📚
This video was definitely worth the wait! I think STY is a book that is strong on a first read but even better on a second read, when you can appreciate the quiet beauty of it all the more. Really looking forward to your ranking and prediction video!
Thank you. It’s interesting where we both ended up 😊
Really enjoyed this series and seeing you take on the books. Hope you do it again next year but no pressure haha
Thank you. We both thoroughly enjoyed it 🙏🙏🙏💛💛💛📚📚📚
Oh phew Louise I’ve been waiting with bated breath to see if you enjoyed it as this is my pick for the prize. I’ve loved these parallel videos so much, looking forward to your ranking video!
Our ranking was a lot of fun and we’re still speaking 😂🙏🙏🙏💛💛💛📚📚📚
@ Glad to hear it😂
I am going to give this ago! Thanks
Hope you like it! 👍
Ooh phew, we can still film a ranking video and do Women’s Prize Day as you liked it. Hahaha. So interesting to see what we’ve picked up similarly theme wise. What a treat these parallel reads have been.
for your viewers too. TY.
It’s been such a joy and I’m delighted that you can still bear to speak to me 🫢😂😂❤️❤️❤️
@@louisesavidgemuses4135 well after one revelation in our ranking videos things could be on a knife edge haha.
@SavidgeReads 🤦🏼♀️
It sounds phenomenal to me after your reviews . It s gone on my TBR list . 🎉Thank you.
Hope you enjoy it! 😊🙏🙏🙏💛💛💛📚📚📚
@ I m sure I will but I cannot start it until I read these six books 😂
Can’t wait to read Tracy Chevalier’s book, love her writing….pretty sure it’ll make me want to visit Venice which is never a bad thing. I’m also made up for yourself and Simon hosting the Women’s Prize bookclub.!
I’m pretty sure it will make you want to visit too. All prepd up for WP Book Club tomorrow, we’re very excited 😊
Such an excellent book!
It really is! 🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚💛💛💛
Happy birthday, Louise!🥳
Many thanks 💛
We (in the US) had the ending of daylight savings time this past weekend...so I guess one week after the UK. I loved, loved North Woods very similarly to you! I feel like you are the first person I've "known" that liked it as much as I did. I couldn't get either of my book clubs to even try it. I was rooting for it to win the Pulitzer last year. What kind of teacher are/were you? University professor? High school? Just wondering...I've only started watching your channel just lately. Also hearing you talk about books is a great distraction from the U.S. election! Thanks so much for making videos!
It is a fabulous book 🤩 I was a high school teacher and loved it. Retired last Christmas and thoroughly enjoying retirement too - especially the extra reading time 🤩
Hi Louise I have been intrigued about reading ‘The unlikely pilgrimage of Harold Fry’ and I have managed to pick up a copy! I have started reading it today and loving it 😊
That’s lovely to hear. Thanks for letting me know 🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚💛💛💛
I love your bookshelves! They feel so homey and comfortable :)
Thank you!! 😊 My lovely husband built them for me 🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚💛💛💛
@louisesavidgemuses4135 excellent. We looove those kind of husbands.
Love the bust on your table. Who is she? Is it Demeter, or Diana?
I think it is probably Artemis. I love her too 🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚💛💛💛
I’m getting it!! Thanks.
Hope you like it! 🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚💛💛💛
It is such a joy to read along with two of you. This is the first year I have read through the Booker shortlist before the prize giving, excited to see who wins ( I have even begun to watch the BBC coverage of the Booker in the 80’s & 90’s - it is my new comfort watch. The commentary from the review panel definitely don’t hold back especially Germaine Greer) 🤍
I did not know that this coverage was available. Must have a look 👀
Pat Barker's 'Regeneration' Trilogy is an excellent read when it comes to the effect of wars on a people/country/landscape.
For some reason, I’ve only read the first in the trilogy 🤔🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚💛💛💛
Do you mean that the sex scenes aren't 'gratuitous' ?
I think so… 🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚💛💛💛
Harold Fry was on my rereading list for years, and you talking about it made me decide to read it this year still😊! Unfortunately, I didn't like the other books in the series that much. They were a bit twee...
That’s interesting as I think I thought Harold Fry was going to be twee but I didn’t feel it was 🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚💛💛💛
Loved this video because when I finished the book...i was blown away and wanted to talk to someone about it!
Brilliant 🤩
Great discussion - thanks Louise.
Glad you enjoyed it! 🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚💛💛💛
Oh I’m excited about the Book Club! I’m currently ready Jonathan Strange and it’s such a chunk but I’m hooked….. x
I’m loving it too 🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚💛💛💛
Just got my ticket for the livestream! Really looking forward to it, I hope you have an amazing time hosting 🤩💗 Will have to come to one of the events at some point! Really glad to hear you’ve enjoyed the Booker shortlist along with other corking reads this month 🍁🍂
Hope you enjoy it! So glad you’re giving it a watch 🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚💛💛💛
I am reading North Woods at the moment too . I have just read The part about the twin sisters 😵 wow!! I had not imagined where it would go...but such perfect storytelling and prose. I also read The Kids a couple of years ago and I am not really a big poetry reader but I was very impressed and moved by these poems. I can see ,as a teacher why it would be so close to your heart. The Glass Makers is on my tbr 📚
I think you’ll love The Glassmaker 🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚💛💛💛
Thanks, Louise!🌷North Woods was one of my favourite books of 2023. I wasn’t prepared for some sort of ghost story, so I found it baffling at first😅I loved the ending! I’m intrigued by The Glassmaker, but found The Girl with the Pearl Earring not really convincing, so I’m not sure…
I loved it but can see why you might be hesitant 🙏🙏🙏📚📚📚💛💛💛
