I really enjoyed this talk. My takeaway from this is to get out and do something that you believe in. You don't become an expert because someone says you are, but because you are invested in making things happen!

What a great combination of story-telling, humility, humor and inspiration. Great job David. I'll come to any of your parties anytime.

"It takes three years to become an expert" I love the ideas that you shared in this video, truly inspiring. I especially love this quote because I think that a lot of people choose to give up their passion because they believe that they could never become an expert at it. This quote inspires people to take action and start working toward their dreams!

I appreciate the Real Talk, which makes things *more possible* for folks who are struggling to get their foot in the door anywhere let alone be recognized as an expert. I also imagine that a POC wouldn't have had such an easy time of the same, which makes this presentation meaningful for it's transparency. Thank you David!

It is never easy. It's is about creating a solid foundation through learning and practicing your craft - then engaging in creative opportunities to put yourself out there. By taking action over and over you increase the odds of something happening. I believe that transparency in general, especially related to technology is how we all succeed.

It's about the journey, and getting started without overthinking and doubting yourself. The journey never starts out easy, but the payoff is always worth it. Have an opportunity, take it! Because why not? Thanks, David.

Such a great message on "doing something." So many people want but never do.

I love the funny observation about the value of 'nominations'. Great motivator to go out and make a difference: Now... not in a mythical future after you reaped the successes based on actions that you put off trying until you were qualified. He makes a powerful case.

“Manifest your destiny and just make it happen” 👏 👏 Such a powerful and inspiring talk. David did an awesome job, his story on how he became a standup comic was really funny 😆

"Manifest Your Destiny" was the theme of TEDx Andrews, so I ended my talk with that! And I made sure my talk focused on taking action! Thanks!

A great and natural talk about a topic that many people perceived as something almost too difficult to achieve. I laughed at the idea of you becoming a stand up comic in that way! 🤗

I generally agree on the 3 years to be an industry expert. But it can be a lot less if the very purpose of your work is becoming an industry expert quickly. Looking back at my career in strategy consulting, cumulative six months of work on an industry, preferably over 2-5 projects spanning different time periods, made me an expert in them. And it's true that a lot of people only believe they are an expert if they have grey hair and spent 25 years in an industry.
