Flash Gordon is a 1980 British space opera action film filmed in Technicolor and Todd-AO, based on the comic strip of the same name created by Alex Raymond. The film was directed by Mike Hodges, and produced by Dino De Laurentiis.
It stars Sam J. Jones, Melody Anderson, Topol, Max von Sydow, Timothy Dalton, Brian Blessed, and Ornella Muti. The screenplay was written by Lorenzo Semple, Jr., with a story adaptation by Michael Allin. It intentionally uses a camp style similar to the 1960s TV series Batman (for which Semple had developed and written many episodes) in an attempt to appeal to fans of the original comics and serial films.
Although a box office success in the UK, it performed poorly overseas. The film is notable for its soundtrack composed, performed and produced by the rock band Queen, with the orchestral sections by Howard Blake.

I miss Mike Hodges, Robert Forster, Yvette Mimieux, Roddy McDowall, Maximilian Schell, Max von Sydow, and George Carlin so much and I really love both The Black Hole and Flash Gordon 1980 as one of the most underappreciated and my all time favorite sci-fi films.
Mike Hodges was a great film director for Flash Gordon, Max von Sydow as Emperor Ming along with Maximilian Schell as Dr. Hans Reinhardt are both one of my absolute favorite sci-fi villains, and Robert Forster was a brilliant film actor in The Black Hole and Alligator. I also love Yvette Mimieux, Roddy McDowall, and George Carlin. Yvette Mimieux was great with Roddy McDowall in The Black Hole, George Carlin was the best American comedian of all time, and Jammin' in New York from 1992 is my favorite George Carlin special.
Better than Star Wars, IMO. What Space Opera should be...insane!
This movie got people to be interested in flash Gordon again and it had lot of new things in the movie were the hawk men was a lot of them flying and fighting with the spacecraft and the people on the ship
