      Adam is beneath him.

I wouldn't say defensive but rather he tried answer critisism so that there is a broader understanding of how the cideo was made and what their point of view was. On top of that i think the way Adam anwered was pretty calm to as he wrote multiple tweets explaining. Lastly it may seem arrogant but thats is mostlikely because it was based on dr. mike's video ,which only gave limited explainaitions (due to it's length and way of editing) on some comments.

I think what you need to do is go in knowing 'It's a comedy show'. The bit in the middle has a bit of exaggerating. you really only need the beginning where he has the point and the end where he goes more in depth about it. And with that it's Mammograms aren't as good as you think. You should only use them if you have a lump you're worried about. Or when you get into your 40's and the risks are higher. The middle has a lot of facts, but nothing that's really required to know, and is mostly the entertainment part to make sure people watch and help them to remember the show.

    • @themalakorein396

@@kharnthebetrayer8251 right but what mike said is correct, if someone is already afraid of the idea of a certain procedure, and then you go on a 5 minute rant about how bad they are and everything that went wrong, they arent going to pay attention to the 30 seconds of good you say at the very end. and even if its a comedy show, presenting information out of context, even though it may be factual, can cause misleading ideas. I will use myself as an example, growing up I loved to watch history channel, and one of the episodes i watched was about Ireland, and it had to do with the IRA. At the time, due to the way the information had been provided in the episode, I though the IRA were just freedom fighters for Ireland to escape British control. They are war profiteering terrorists... nothing more. Not giving full context cant greatly change the perspective of the information.

I am a 31 year old man who has had 2 mammograms because I have a weird lump on my Moob, and my dr. Wants to keep an eye on it.
The mammogram itself is pretty easy, no pain or anything, a machine just squeezes your boob/moob for a minute, then they may do an ultrasound.
Idk if thats what you are afraid of, but the procedure itself is pretty tame.

Mammograms have come a long way, they sqish the Girls, but not so much that it hurts. Not unless your girls are super tender (which is a thing for many) apparently not for me cause on a pain scale of 1-10, 10 being omg wth, I was at a .0001 on discomfort. It was like laying on my stomach level of annoyance. Then again, my girls aren't big or heavily padded....any more...sooo maybe that's another reason why they're done later in life? Less padding=less pain=easier to find anything potentially wrong? Maybe?

Since I turned 34 I started getting screened yearly. Even being on the smaller size it is not painful, just mildly uncomfortable on the arm having I raised and laying on the machine, that's all. It makes so clear that people/ creators can be just in it for the fame and money, because that was their motivation for starting content creation.
While others set out to start creation purely to help regardless of if it will get them famous or not. I like, no I love not even that I am starting to crave Dr. Ms pure way of doing things.
I am simply fed up with this defensive posture towards facts. One example is vaccines.
We should focus more on teaching children that it is okay to be wrong as long as you are willing to listen to factual critique.
Instead of letting this age of social media dilute their understanding of what an argument is. Your argument is not more valid because you have twenty million followers. Unless that is what you are arguing about, how it is to have so many followers.
I just wish Adams response tweet was less aggressive in tone, and used less words on defending themselves and more words on looking at the critique.
One thing I do think we need to touch on is how he might have come across Dr Ms initial video. Thousands of people could have started some sort of overdramatic shitstorm that forced Adam to watch the video in a negative light. Then afterwards commenting on it to defend the show from those thousands of people creating a mob. In my opinion and experience that is how can be with many of these types of responses on the internet.
So I am sincerely happy, that it was handled in this calm collected way in this video.

I don't know if it was personal, but Adam did seem defensive. I don't think he was trying to be mean in his comment, but I think he may have taken the criticism personally. They work hard on the show with the constant fact-checking, even more so with this episode, so to hear criticisms might have upset him.
The fact is, they both stated facts and thier opinions and no one is wrong. Adam seemed to take it a little personal, but Dr. Mike welcomes the criticism and owned up to what Adam mentioned, all while being respectful and didn't come off as rude.
I like both Adam and Dr. Mike, and I don't think either of them mean any harm, or would ever intentionally try to misinform people with their show/channel. They just had a difference of opinion, regarding stated facts, that they both agree on.

I think he missed that fact that you were trying to word your responses in a way that would effectively communicate the right message to the consumer, rather than simply giving commentary based on your personal beliefs or feelings toward the situation. It's great that he had medical professionals review his commentary; however, the way he mentioned it insinuated that since it was reviewed by professionals, the information was finite. Doctors frequently have different opinions regarding the same topic, and all perspectives must be heard in order to make the best decisions.

Speaking as an agent with an insurance license if you want to blame anyone for the high cost of medicine blame the administration but more over blame the insurance industry. The relationship between the insurance industry and the medical industry is adversarial and symbiotic and if that sounds contradictory then you are right. Insurance companies don't want to pay out lots of money so they hire bean counters to figure out how to deny claims and hospitals hire bean counters to figure out how to make them pay. So costs go up and insurance companies are shocked by the price and spend money to prove that they don't have to so hospitals spend money on professionals who specialize in making insurance companies pay for your care. It's not unlike nuclear proliferation and the ones harmed are the general public. Everything gets more expensive and everyone loses.

They also snipe all the biller / coders right out of school before hospitals can get them, meaning that most of these younger biller / coders learn bad habits from the insurance company and learn to try and get everything denied. Also, as a retired biller / coder, can you not call them bean counters? The job is actually quite difficult and often ignored by both patients and doctors.

I would also add btw that if these jobs didn't exist, medical care would be a lot less expensive even if you had to pay your own way. I've traveled abroad quite a lot and in countries which denied me coverage for medical stuff while I was staying there and said I had to pay all the costs the costs were really cheap. I mean laughably cheap. I mean going in for stomach pains and being diagnosed with ulcers and given non generic prescription medication and paying about 100 bucks for the entire thing, including doctor visit and medicine.
The Biller Coders are the problem if you ask me. But they only really exist because insurance companies don't want to pay. So... My industry creates yours and yours makes things expensive but only because mine is full of money grubby selfish people. Fair enough?

    • @darrenskjoelsvold
      @darrenskjoelsvold 5 років тому +4

@@concanthandleme The ironic thing is I would argue that all this fighting over the bill that insurance companies do is also probably costing them a lot more money than if they actually just PAID THE BLOODY BILL.
My own company has a life insurance company that it owns. They saved a lot of money and hassle because they don't have what we'll just call a war clause. If somebody dies because of the conflict between two sovereign nations then many insurance companies have a clause where they don't have to pay a death claim.
The companies that decided that on 9-11 they weren't paying probably spent untold amounts of money fighting those claims and in the long run it probably lost them more money than if they had just paid the death claims. My own company had lower losses than the industry at large because they simply never added this language to their contacts. It's currently a selling point but likely the reason it's not there is because when they were writing them up originally they simply forgot they could add them. I'm a realist and I don't fool myself into thinking that my company is just morally better than everybody else.
So they just paid them and didn't get mired down in court costs and so forth fighting families over death claims that most had to pay out eventually anyway and thus they saved a lot of money that then went back into shoring up reserves for paying death claims.
This kind of short sighted cost saving activity is really dumb because it all ends up costing everybody more money in the long run. The insurance companies denying claims because somebody didn't cross a t and instead of the doctor amputating the foot they ampulated the foot which isn't covered in the language of the contract. Is just silly and stupid and means we're all paying for life saving services which are for the public good. OK so this is a silly example but all the fighting over medical treatment is silly too.

Intelligent debates are difficult to come by, usually because people have a Them vs. Us attitude. If there is one thing I have learned over the years, it is that text doesn't give tone of voice. You can type something one way and have it easily misconstrued as "mean", "overcritical" or "rude" without ever meaning for it to sound that way. Tone of voice, inflection and facial expression can't be shown in text alone. So people will read something from someone with their own viewpoint in mind and be unable to see how the person typing may have meant something different. I see a lot of people stating that Adam was being vicious.......but reading the tweets myself, I only see someone who is trying to explain issues from the perspective he was given by another expert in their field.

    (3) It’s more likely that I’ll have a “not so bad” cancer than the really bad one, so I should maybe wait out treatment.

i knew all humans had some level of bias, but didn't know that as education increased, bias increased. i was wondering if you could point me to a study that explains that more in depth. i'm a psychology undergraduate, so i'm really interested in learning how to fight cognitive biases. thanks!

I'm a psychologist and currently doing a MA, I had a research topic and my supervisor insisted I had bias but I couldn't figure out how. When he explained the bias "I had" I didn't; and was so biased now I just wanted to disprove his projected bias (an incredibly stupid one).
And then I realised that fool git me so biased I wouldn't be able to conduct an objective study. 😭😠
*He* *still* *pisses* *me* *off* for ruining my great topic.

I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for but in The Truly False Consensus Effect: An Ineradicable and Egocentric Bias in Social Perception by Joachim Krueger, and Russell Clemet (Keep in mind this study was done back in 1994). People with higher education are more likely to suffer from consensus bias.
I'm not sure if higher education has a direct link to an increased bias, but it does cause all those seeking it to spend more time with people who are going about life in the same fashion. Granted with the internet being more popular now, I would be interested if the numbers have changed at all.

One of the big factors of the exploding cost of healthcare that Dr. Mike talked about, but only briefly, are corporations. Whether it is insurance, medical device manufacturers, or pharmaceuticals all of these corporations have a heavy influence on how price is out of control in healthcare. Talk about trying to turn a profit. I would argue that these businesses sole purpose is to turn a profit, not help people. At least with Hospitals they are trying to help people.

Gotta say I agree with you on the profiteering not being the biggest issue. Australia has private for-profit hospitals but we still don't have the same kinds of insanely inflated medical costs as US hospitals, and whilst I'm sure there's a hell of a lot of different factors at play, the simplicity of our public and private insurance systems is likely one of the reasons.

Bluebird Grayson I don’t think Adams reply was particularly snarky, I also felt that (when I watched doctor mikes reaction) he felt fairly defensive, which is understandable. I also think that simply taking a section out of a segment can make anything look like “normal viewers will misunderstand” and I’m sure you can do the same with Mikes videos. In the hospital video it does clarify straight after the segment about those tests to start them at 40 so the insistence from Doctor Mike sounds strange.
As well as this, doctor mike is reacting to those tweets in a video format, while Adams are written. As such it’s a lot easier to misunderstand Adams tone compared to Mikes because we can see mikes reactions as he’s replying.
I’d like to clarify that I’m a big Doctor Mike fan and Adam Ruins Everything Fan and love this interation, I just also think it’s a little too hasty to assume Mike is chill and Adam isn’t because of formatting

Adam is pretty much a know it all asshole who isn’t interested in debate or conversation. He utilizes anecdotes when it suits him and dismisses objective data if that information goes against his belief. I enjoy the premise of Adam ruins everything and I think there are some great episodes.
However... I think a lot of the episodes are ideologically driven instead of simply fact focused. I find Dr. Mike to have a kinda irritating personality which makes his videos hard to watch for me. But I think he overall does a good job in presenting his opinions and is fair to others.

Dr. Mike, I lived in Sweden for two years. I've also visited hospitals outside of Sweden. I broke my collarbone playing (american) football with my brother on a road trip in Austria. We didnt see a doctor until our 2nd day in Venice, Italy. I was x-rayed, treated, in and out within a few hours, without spending a dime. When we went back home to Sweden, we visited another doctor for a follow-up, only to find that my collar bone was healing, in his words, "quite beautifully". So my question for you is, if other countries can provide free healthcare to not just their citizens, but tourists, immigrants, and anyone who visits the country, why can't America do that?
