    Have loved this channel for a long time... the instructionals have been mostly great, and so far I'm also loving the switch in content/location/presenter. Bear in mind though, if you want to make the channel HUGE, consider that a majority of your audience are riding at a level (and on horses) who aren't necessarily even on the bit most of the time, let alone trained and responsive to seat/weight aides... Instructionals that only ever show how to do things on finished/high-level/professionally trained horses aren't so helpful to those riding ordinary/normal/naughty/green/challenging/low-level horses... I can guarantee you if I rode a leg yield with one stirrup and one hand, my novice-level horse would not do it anyway like Wessel does! Totally get that the point of this vid was to demonstrate how important seat/weight are, but mebbe start by showing how to install the buttons first...

      I think u r doing a great job teaching all levels of us! Ur demo s on Wessel still give us the idea, such as shifting the weight which u also demonstrated on the wooden horse, very clearly! Ur coaching Ashly on Jay was very helpful to me as well! The leg yield lesson helped me a great deal, thanks so very much!

    Wonderful explanation. I've spent years being told to wrap the horse round my leg, control the shoulder ..never how! I just tried to copy what I saw and hoped it was right. The banana is king! The other big big breakthrough was the difference in changing my rein length and finding out that it held everything together. It wasnt loopy but that little extra gave me what I was looking for without hard hands..they can still be soft and yielding when shorter! Thank you.

    Your channel has helped my riding so much!!! When you can only get a few hours in the saddle, its so important to understand the breakdown of exactly what you are asking your horse to do and how. So many trainers skip over explaining what goes into the basic riding commands. It's crazy to me that you have riders going over jumps before learning that fundamental horsemanship that you get from Dressage. Thank you!!

    Such a nice video that explains it so well. At the moment I'm struggling with my horse on keeping him on the bit when I ask for upward and downward transitions in walk trot and canter. He always lifts his head. I've heard so many things about more leg and half halts but l don't actually know what that means and when exactly to apply those aids.

    • @michaelarodgers4763
      @michaelarodgers4763 3 роки тому +3

      I also struggle with the timing of applying the aids because I don't know when exactly you have to apply the aids, for example in the leg yield is it when the front outside leg goes back you apply outside leg pressure. Idk if anyone else struggles with the timing of aids and when exactly you have to apply them

      Yes pls have the same problem my horse can do collection at walk but as soon as we get to the trot no matter how mutch I try to helf halt my outside rain and put on my inside leg he doesn't collect him self and his head stays high.. (idk if my cue or aid I'm giving him is also correct to ask for more roundness if u could show how we ask a horse to come round that woudk be great) 😂

      disclamer im not an expert, however something that may help is trying to get a little more engagement from the hind end so lots of circles and half halts. then try sitting for a few strides and if he lifts his head then keep practising just sitting a couple strides so that he gets used to that and relaxes so then when you ask for your transition you can just sit and gently push into the hand for the transition with less resistance. takes practise but is something i am working on atm with a couple young horses, hope it helps a little :)

    I ride hunters yet I have a young horse whom has only been undersaddle for 5months.. he was an amish buggy horse as a 2 an 3 yrold.. yes you read that right .. who could be a bit hot but thanks to your videos an the training scale he's becoming very rideable... He is a lucky penny .. an so darn cute.. But the ground work b4 I get on really gets him in a good frame of mind .. an ready for lots of suppeling excerises.. Now on leg yield he'll do about 3 or four steps well keeping his hind end in line with his shoulders ...which I feel is very good .. an the rest of the way his hind usually falls a bit outside but I don't fuss too much if he gets me to the focal point.. is that a correct approach.. I feel that youl explained that as his strength improves an his suppleness get better his leg yields will become more correct through the movement..

    I am so thankful for this video as I have been struggling to do this leg yield for quite a few months ( even tho my horse could do this with her previous owner) . Your teaching to put ur weight on the side u want to go was my key factor in success. She did it beautifully . I need this for my test in the show ( first level) . It also worked for my cantering which I couldn’t keep either! I know these are basic, but after all my surgeries I became rather fearful in my riding! Thanks so very much for all ur tips in ur videos, which all help me. I do have lessons but the coach can’t tell me everything and can’t see it all either! Plus lessons are expensive! Ur visual s in teaching are so effective I can remember a lot more during my rides, (than others)! Thanks

    I would love coaching videos about showing in dressage at each level, particularly the lower levels. What should we be schooling at home before we enter a Walk-Trot test? Or Training, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc? What will the judge expect--Are we expected to show all of the steps in the dressage training scale or do they come in time?
    I know this may be a tough one because the audience is global and dressage levels and tests vary by country, but "de-mystifying" the show experience might help some of us who are less comfortable in the sandbox who still want to play!
    Again, thanks for this series. You guys are crushing it again and I'm SO grateful!

    Alicia, I have been a rider many years, but new to dressage. I am trying to sit in the small side of the banana. I can see how important that must be! But can you give some more instructions at to the proper way how to do this with out leaning over? Also, you spoke about a horse your friend was riding who can go backwards like a moonwalk at unwanted times!! I am currently starting my young mare. There are times when she sucks back, and though she is still going, she is not going forward cheerfully. I want to deal with that in the proper way! Your Mowgley videos have been super helpful! But I haven’t seen you needing to deal with this problem. I thank you so very much for all you are doing for all of us your eager learners!! Hope and pray you are better now from your coughing and such!!

    • @YourRidingSuccess
      @YourRidingSuccess  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Julie, great questions! With the banana try to think about staying upright on top of the spine without leaning either way. A good way is to think about rotating your hips and shoulders to match the horses spine rotation (think of matching your hips/shoulders to the horses chest) Watch this video as it might be more clear to see where Alicia is putting her weight as she rides the different movements ua-cam.com/video/NpZ5K0_fap4/v-deo.html With your other question, normally when horses go backwards it is because they are stuck in the body and they think backwards is the best option for them. Try moving the horses body in order to create some suppleness, like a small circle and take it one step at a time. 🤩

    This was very nice thank you :) Could you clarify how to shift the weight? I can see what you‘re doing and that makes a lot of sense but what I didn’t understand is where you shift the weight in your body (if that makes sense). Do you put it into the leg or the hip (or the ischial tuberosity)?
    Thanks for the in depth look at leg yielding, it is such a nice thing to use in riding :)

    • @YourRidingSuccess
      @YourRidingSuccess  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Tani, This is one for Alicia!
      " think of the horse in the shape of a banana. a small part and a large part. you need to sit on top of the backbone, not on one side of the ribcage. so if you think of the banana, imagine how you must sit to ensure you stay in the middle.
      Imagine the horse or the bannana are wrapping around your inside leg. the shoulder and the hind leg on the inside are hugging your inside leg. wrapping then selves around you.
      so if you are leg yielding toward the left. The left ribcage is big (outside) the right ribcage is small (inside) you need to ensure the small ribcage is hugging you.
      That is a few different ways of saying it! I hope this helps! xxxx"

    You always make everything look so easy! Should I be working on straightness first before I ask the leg yield? And does my horse need to be through and on the bit before I ask leg yield? On my OTT, I want him to be more responsive to my leg, so would the leg yield be a good thing to do so he listens to my aids? Sorry for all the questions!

    What would you do when training a green horse that doesn’t know how to move away from the weight and inside leg aid. Do you exaggerate the aids to try to get them to cross over?

    • @YourRidingSuccess
      @YourRidingSuccess  3 роки тому +7

      Hi Gemma! This is one for Alicia.... Her response below.
      "the weight works due to physics...thats the beauty of it. With a more green horse, we look for simply one step at a time. expect the positivity of one step, rather then the negativity for its ONLY one step. As the balance gets better with the horse, he will be able to string more steps together. Crossing comes from suppleness.... so you may not get crossing in the beginning but it will come as your horse gets more and more supple. We will be showing you on younger horses too over the next few week!"
      Hope that helps!! xxx

    I just wanted to say what a great job you are doing taking over. I am actually surprised that you didn’t already have a channel because this seems to come natural to you. I’m looking forward to your next video. I’ve looked for years for a good video of exactly what aids the rider is using and the only ones I’ve found so far is Amelia Newcombe’s channel. You seem to have a very similar way of explaining things so I’m really enjoying your videos!!
    Also I’d love to hear you explain in real time as you are applying each aid what exactly your doing, I realize a lot of it happens so fast but at least we could know the order in which you’re applying them.

    I have a horse who is incredibly bright and learns very quickly but due to being a mare, she has her days where she refuses to give her feet for care or even lifting with the crop when I am trying to improve and lengthen her stride. My question is, do you have a video with a green horse from beginning to end on all leg yielding? Both from the ground and then saddle and presented that way so I can try, pause, and ride? I ask because this arab has potential for dressage and I plan on prepping her for it. Yet, I have always been a western rider. I need to see the first step all the way through.

I am currently working on circles/bend/corners with my horse and she is much stiffer on the left (inside rein on left) than when working on the right. When I practice on the left, my hands seem to separate too much as I try to maintain contact on the outside rein and bend in the circle or even the corner. It's also exhausting ha ha! I have a wonderful little 6yr old painted sport pony with a HUGE shoulder and really nice scopey movement in the front legs, nice stretch to the bit at a trot on straight lines, with over track, but he really really REALLY struggles to bring that movement into anything that requires bending and canter. his feet just get all discombobulated, I have had one coach say that his back legs look "drunk", and he loses all connection, usually bulging his rib cage and hollowing out until we go back to straight lines at trot. any advice would be wonderful! ❤❤❤👍👍🎆

      Yes! I wish I had checked this before our lesson today, my coach could have done a video for me! I will try to post one very soon!
      the hardest part for me is feeling when I'm off balance just a little bit, he's so young and sensitive to the shifting of my weight that even when I feel "balanced" to stay on, it probably doesn't always come across to him as balanced for what I'm asking of him. but its why I love dressage, its the constant learning curve, every success creates a new challenge and every failure a new chance to succeed!

      So we are adding a video in between this and step 2, showing what to do when you loose your balance!

    This is a great video. How are you specifically moving your seat to create that open space?

    • @YourRidingSuccess
      @YourRidingSuccess  3 роки тому

      Hi Regine! Yes it can be confusing. And it is such an important movement,
      The aid and seat position, "The rider’s weight is shifted more onto the inside seat bone." (USDF). It is a real physical movement. You shift where you sit, but while still remaining upright in out torso.
      A few more notes that might help :
      ‘FEI Rule Book’ straight, except for a slight flexion at the poll away from the direction in which he moves. This is the definition of a leg yield in a test.
      You then have variations for training... (which is in the video), sometimes with bend as well. It is a big light blue moment for loads of riders!!! Hope it has helped you! xx

    Great videos! My guy gets very tense in lateral work, is it best to settle for now for a less correct leg yield and keep the relaxation, or to insist on a more correct leg yield from the start? Thanks lots
