Brilliant! Loved this! Again, I've watched this a couple of times now, because the information is so comprehensive, so enormous, & integral, there's simply too much to really absorb, in one sitting! The fact that your knowledge is so extensive & you are so able to articulate & break it now, makes you a riding genius Alicia. Never come across anybody so capable. And the fact that you provide all these videos freely & openly, is amazing & FULLY appreciated! I just love your thinking. Thankyou thankyou thankyou YRS Team, both human & equine members! 👏👏👏😇🐎❤🙏
Right now I am applying your video series tips and tricks to a pretty little flashy chestnut mare = 4 yrs old, 14 hh show prospect, and she is loving all of your tips. I had a great dressage coach years ago, and her voice echoes though my mind while I ride, and now your voice joins her, lol. Your videos remind me of all the details or the how and why she instilled over many lessons, making this training especially easy to follow and understand making the training extremely smooth and successful. as your video series really sets both rider and horse. or in my case a pony, up for success... I love this so much! Thx again!!!
Such a lovely comment - thank you! How amazing is it that as we ride around we can have all those words of wisdom swirling around! Keep up the great work! ✨
I'm 58 and was in Pony Club as a youngster. It was such a blessing to have that basis. I know these things even though my riding is a bit lacking at this point. My OTTB who is 19 is a perfect fit for me because he and I are just trying to remember when we were better...lol! We actually could fool you into thinking we're pretty proficient on a good day. ♥️

Hi Alicia, I just wanted to tell you that you are an amazing instructor. I am an old dressage rider and also a psychology doctor, I have seen many, many wonderful dressage instructors and I can tell you with absolute confidence that you are a virtuoso(a) trainer or instructor as you may prefer to be called. Thank you for your wonderful lesson. Salud !!!
I have never responded to a video but I felt I really should today. Principally to say thank you so much. I have been riding for many years at a very low level trying to fit riding around my very busy job. I retired two years ago and bought a lovely Dutch warmblood mare with a lovely kind temperament. I have had lessons for years and have only made modest improvement despite trying really really hard. I am just coming back from a 7 month layoff because I had an episode of serious illness and was wondering if I would carry on. I stumbled on to this video and the seat video and my riding dramatically improved in one ride ! I no longer want to give up and honestly think finally I can improve. I and my horse cannot possibly thank you enough.
Omg thank you so Much for this!!! I spend a lot of my time in lessons having no idea what my coach is talking about… 😆 I just nod and say yep I understand when I really don’t… So thank you heaps and heaps 🥰
Hope I could this this twice or thrice 🙈.you just explained everything wonderfully and in very easy way, thnx for sharing your knowledge.and looking forward to part 2🤗

Wow I love this, so motivational. My horse was badly lame, tendon issue & had to have an op. After months of rehab i'm enjoying her again & riding her properly. Her strength & suppleness has improved so much. We've had a break through she goes on the bit & is able to propel herself from behind & come up to be more uphill, hard work is paying off & she herself is so comfortable in her way of going :)

I’ve got a sweet story for you. I’ve been rehabbing my 35 year old pony by using the training scale. I put her on a lead and begin to walk around the arena. I start counting her rhythm by glancing back at her hind legs and then I make a ten meter circle. I started smaller but she’s comfortable at 10 meters. She blows and chews. A real test came when the farrier came and she was comfortable holding her hind legs up for him to trim her feet. I think it had helped her balance! These are exciting changes for the little girl. Thank you so much!
Love these videos! Could you by chance make a video on the horse who is naturally not very forward and how to encourage momentum? Tend to be behind the leg after becoming tired? Building stamina, all the things “lazy, unmotivated horse” Disclaimer- horse has been fully vetted and had a lameness exam!
Hi Carrie! Have you watched out OTTB series? Mowgley is not naturally forward and Alicia talks about using suppleness to enable him to move more freely, using her body to set his tempo and using quick aids. Try looking at this video and let me know if you have questions ua-cam.com/video/mBIi_O6GVys/v-deo.html 🤩
Really awesome explanation! It’s going to be super insightful to see you riding the younger horses and talking about the training scale. Some great practical tips here which I feel is often lacking. I often find myself understanding the training scale but not knowing what to actually do (exercises, aids, etc.) when I’m riding to work on the training scale or solve problems I might be having, so it would be great to keep hearing those real world things!
Thank you! Yes keep following the OTTB Mowgley's journey for sure as you will see how a young horse progresses through the Training Scale and hopefully this will help you with your horse ✨

Very helpful concept thank you Alicia! 😁 I would love a video on square halts as I can never feel where her feet are when halting and she always has one of her hind legs resting underneath her.

In my mind you have completed the definition of the half halt in your discussion of contact/connection here. Originally I heard you answer the rider whose horse's head went up in downward transitions. You told her to start asking for the halt on the circle thus employing the half halt and not breaking the horses rhythm. I rode HJ and there was never a discussion of what the half halt is in the horses body (my understanding it was kind of a squeeze of the rein to say - hey horse we are changing gears so pay attention) but with your definition of what one should be looking for in the horses BODY the sit or coming under of the hind end through the engagement of the connected back and from there, yes, a multitude of things that can happen. Am I right? makes far more sense now. Apparently I was lucky when my old understanding worked ha ha or at least I was under the impression it was! Thanks! love your content.

So this video is fantastic! So clear and helpful. Thank you. Best I have ever seen covering this content. I do have one question, I have been trying to look through videos to see if I can find if you have broken it down... but you talked in a video about the "square" of your seat movement when walking vs. Forward and back movement. I have never heard this before and I have been trying to figure it out via trial and error on my own... But it would be super awesome if you could explain that movement or do a video on it. Riding the walk properly is so hard... I find it the hardest... Especially to maintain any overtrack... And the forward... And the contact... And the correct rhythm... I feel like maybe this square thing that you're talking about is what I have been missing. Can you explain the mechanics to me? I would really appreciate it and I think it might help me a ton. Thank you!
Hi Rachel, super question! Firstly I am so glad you enjoyed the training scale video. Excellent questions about the walk and yes we can absolutely do a video demonstrating it but best piece of advice I can give you is the walk IS the hardest pace as it has no natural forward tendency and the horse has the most balance as always 3 legs on the ground so it is more difficult than the trot and canter to influence the horse.

This is so helpful! I just realized I have been misinterpreting connection with collection. This is now makes much more sense! Thank you for all the effort
will be great to see on a young horse, im struggling at the moment with a horse who is quite unbalanced and on the forehand but also quite fussy in the contact and often drops behind the vertical. its hard to get him to push into the contact.

@@YourRidingSuccess So many takeaways!! Biggest: spending 75% of your time on the lower portion of the scale no matter your or your horses skill level. My four legged child is quite talented (I try to keep up) and it is tempting to spend a lot time working on the 'fun stuff'. I found (i think he did too) my next ride after watching this video more enjoyable, light hearted, fair, fun while focused on lower level of scale staying totally aware of how I could help him/us into the next movement. 🙂 So motivational, encouraging, & supportive videos. Love it! Thank you!

Thank you for this! I’m brand spanking new to dressage and my observation is that it seems to be hard to put some of what you’re describing into words (you just kinda “know it when you see or feel it” but language is limited!)! I appreciated the video examples, and sounds like there’s more to come, but I’d love to see really stark differences so it visually makes sense of what you’re explaining. Especially coming off of the Olympics recently and seeing top-notch dressage horses, would like to see what really green horses look like (but I think we’ll also see this as you work with Mowgli too!)! Thanks Alicia and crew for all you do!!! 🥰🥰🥰

This makes so much sense. I like to ride on the bit "without trying" so no pulling or kicking. But that means most times when I do achieve on the bit, I'm not sure why I achieved it. For example this one horse, after a bit of riding he would just go on the bit, feeling heavy in my hands and wanting to go very fast. I didn't know how to handle that power but now it makes sense. I was achieving some steps in the training scale but I didn't realize it. Now I know I have to put the power upwards. To create that big fancy trot. But how exactly do I ask my horse to use his power to move upwards?

You are so good at explaining everything. I also appreciate the visual examples that accompany the verbal descriptions. I find it really hard to learn only by listening to a description if I’m not also doing, but the combination here is key. Is suppleness in this scale what used to be relaxation?

Okay, you asked for questions: My horse is very resistant to my leg aids side to side. I very well may be using them wrong, being a beginner, but when I put on my outside leg to turn his shoulders in, he pushes out his shoulder and runs into it.
We love all the questions!! This is a common question and something we will cover in the Live Q and A Tuesday 17th so tune in to that and Alicia will answer for you 🤩

For rhythm: When you have a horse who has a really stiff, uncomfortable trot when she’s not through, how do you establish a good rhythm without contact? She often evades and sucks back, hollowing her back. Generally we just walk a lot if that happens and de-prioritize trot. It is difficult for me to set her up for success sometimes when her gait is rough because it causes me a lot of body pain, making it tough for me to ride with good form & precision. Thx
I hear you. And, it is so tough to establish a steady rhythm when the horse isn’t using herself properly & when she’s stumbling b/c of that & due to uneven footing.

great video!!! I have a stupid question from a jumper to a dressage person. Why do dressage people ride their horses in stable wraps instead of polos or boots? Another question relating more to an issue I'm having with my lease horse: why/what/how to deal with a horse that is fine one side and really resistant in the other? (he's not lame and doesn't have poor tack fit). everything to the left is SO much harder than the right, he's even spookier going left around the arena vs. right.
Thank you for your questions! Your first question we will be doing a video on soon so stay tuned!! Your second question is suppleness but it is a common question so I will ask Alicia to answer it for you, tune into the Live Q and A 🤩
HI Linda! Let the exercises help you with this, so anything that uprights the horse ie leg yield, shoulder in, even turning a circle help you bring the horses shoulder and hind leg closer together and therefore upright the horse. Also transitions within the pace and between the pace can help you.

Salud !!!
Thank you for your lovely words, I will show Alicia this as she will love to hear it x
Thanks so much for your kind words! You are most welcome!
I got directed to this video with the 4 steps to never bounce around in canter, Super excited to see what I can do to better my dressage!
Fantastic!
Omg thank you so Much for this!!!
I spend a lot of my time in lessons having no idea what my coach is talking about… 😆
I just nod and say yep I understand when I really don’t…
So thank you heaps and heaps 🥰

Wow I love this, so motivational. My horse was badly lame, tendon issue & had to have an op. After months of rehab i'm enjoying her again & riding her properly. Her strength & suppleness has improved so much. We've had a break through she goes on the bit & is able to propel herself from behind & come up to be more uphill, hard work is paying off & she herself is so comfortable in her way of going :)
Lovely to hear you are back riding with her and the videos are helping. Don't forget to send any questions you might have in for Alicia's q and a's.
The 2 videos of the training scales were so profound and finally described in a way that I could understand. Thank you so much!

I just realized she would lose her rhythm when I made the circle too small. She keeps her rhythm at ten meters, relaxes and enjoys her self.
Love the progress you and your horse are making!! Keep it up x
You are a great teacher and make it FINALLY easy to understand!! Thank you!
You're very welcome!
Love these videos! Could you by chance make a video on the horse who is naturally not very forward and how to encourage momentum? Tend to be behind the leg after becoming tired? Building stamina, all the things “lazy, unmotivated horse”
Disclaimer- horse has been fully vetted and had a lameness exam!
Absolutely very helpful, so valuable to have the details, demonstrations, and theory in your videos! Thanks so very much!
Love it, Lucie!! Glad it's helpful! xx
You have helped me with several struggles I've had. Thank you
Happy to help!

Brilliant explanation that I could FINALLY completely understand....thank you.
Yay!! x
Thanks! love your content.
yes!! It's all about checking in with what's happening with your horse and rebalancing if needed
Show examples of this in lower level horses to make it more relatable. For example what does throughness look like at training level or first level.
If you follow our OTTB series you will see how the basics and Training Scale relate to lower level horses. Are you following Mowgley's journey?

This explanation is brilliant! So clear and easy to understand. Thank you so much! 🐎
Our pleasure xx
Amazing! What a gift to us that you have produced this and made it available!
Thank you! 🧡

These are the best videos I think i have ever watched :-) Thank you!
Wow, thank you! So glad you enjoyed it! What was your biggest takeaway?
@@YourRidingSuccess So many takeaways!! Biggest: spending 75% of your time on the lower portion of the scale no matter your or your horses skill level. My four legged child is quite talented (I try to keep up) and it is tempting to spend a lot time working on the 'fun stuff'. I found (i think he did too) my next ride after watching this video more enjoyable, light hearted, fair, fun while focused on lower level of scale staying totally aware of how I could help him/us into the next movement. 🙂 So motivational, encouraging, & supportive videos.

This type of video is infinitely helpful. I look forward to the next one!!
Thx
Hi Nicole, you need to think as Rhythm as the first step, so establish that first and then comes Suppleness then connection ✨
Awesome, thank you!
I hear you. And, it is so tough to establish a steady rhythm when the horse isn’t using herself properly & when she’s stumbling b/c of that & due to uneven footing.

I love this so much!
I’ve only recently started researching about the training scale.
Can you offer some tips for exercises to do to help improve rhythm and suppleness?
Hi Sarah! With Rhythm you either have it or you don't! We actually have a playlist on suppleness exercises! You can find it here :] ua-cam.com/play/PLilNDMqFJS_BVrNsd7DVH8jsNt56-xkI-.html

Awesome!you explain it so so well!🐴😁from Kensi
YAY! So glad you enjoyed the video x
Well it’s a mind blowing episode. I have never ever heard about training scale like that. Some questions appear: everybody tells to work on suppleness by bending and transitions, is it correct? How to work on suppleness? Is suppleness connected with poll and neck relaxation?
This is a great question, I have asked Alicia to answer this for you!

Hello I just started doing dressage a few months ago. I’ve been having a lot of trouble getting past the basics. I just can’t seem to get my 20 m circles and a good canter. And I feel like if I’m doing good on that one day I’m doing something eles wrong. I really want to progress and get better. Any tips!??? Also love ur videos! ❤️
Hi Olivia, are you having challenges with the size of your 20m circles? Or something else? ✨

great video!!!
Your second question is suppleness but it is a common question so I will ask Alicia to answer it for you, tune into the Live Q and A 🤩
@@YourRidingSuccess awesome thanks Tash!! Hope you're doing well 💗
Once you've established a through connection, what is/are the aid(s) to raise the horse's energy up, to create more impulsion?
HI Linda! Let the exercises help you with this, so anything that uprights the horse ie leg yield, shoulder in, even turning a circle help you bring the horses shoulder and hind leg closer together and therefore upright the horse. Also transitions within the pace and between the pace can help you.
Wow this is so cool
I have a question how does the contact work with the inside leg into outside reign?
Hi Anne, this is a common question, I am going to ask Alicia to make a video for you answering this 💕
