Lovely engines! I’ve been very lucky, delivered this morning from Paris to my home in Ardèche, France a magnificent City of London with two SD coaches for the princely sum of 60€. It runs like a dream despite it being over 60 years old. I can forgive the under scale drivers. She’s just magnificent. ❤

Hi, Many thanks indeed for your interest and observations. I'm delighted you enjoyed the session. These models will keep on going long after the current stuff has given up! Feel free to check out my other Hornby-Dublo and Wrenn running sessions.
      Cheers,
      Graeme

I've got two gloss Duchesses of Montrose and one matt finish. The matt one needs a fair bit of work and is awaiting dismantling. I will probably post a video of the gloss ones running on my channel in the next couple of weeks. I have a Silver King and 4MT. Recently gave my Sir Nigel Gresley set to my dad for his birthday.

Thank you for your comments and observations. There's plenty of life left in these models, that's for sure!

That gloss finish is super. The Wrenn moulding does a much better job of lining the driving wheels up with the
'wheel arches/splashers' than the Dublo. It appears the small front wheels went form metal to plastic to metal again. I wouldn't touch the 6526 personally, hardly matters. Thank you for a fascinating film.

Hi, Thank you you for your astute and welcome observations! The H.D. Montrose is still quite easy to find, trouble is that most are in what can only be described as 'toy box' condition. The mouldings are all Dublo, they retooled the 'City' in 1959 and it was this tool that Wrenn acquired in the late 1960s. Wrenn hardly changed anything apart from the introduction of insulated metal bogie wheels later on. It's all good stuff! Cheers.

Ohhhhh joy, l had the Duchess of Montrose probably in the mid fifties, it came complete with a oval layout of track, a break coach & two additional coaches in cream & red paintwork, my parents gave it away & never told me who was the lucky recipient, it must have propelled her thousands of OO miles & can remember the engine used to smell quite hot.
At the time it was probably bought for apx £10 with the control box all made in cast alloys & tin plate, l believe now it would be worth in excess of £300, hope whoever has her still enjoys 😭

Many thanks indeed for your comments and sharing of memories. You're right it's not just about the ownership of such wonderful models, it's the feel, the weight and that distinctive smell they made whilst running. I recall visiting my aunt and uncle in London in August 1963 and experiencing my uncle's H/D Cardiff Castle and Golden Fleece for the first time. I had Tri-ang back home. During this visit the 'Great Train Robbery' happened and I still recall to this day, my mother, aunt and uncle staring into the black and white TV looking in jawdropping disbelief at the events that had just unfolded. I have my uncles H/D locos in my possession and there are uploads of them here. Such evocative memories. Thank you for sharing.

Love your videos. Railwaymen's locomotive names - you forgot Sir Nigel Gresley! Thank you.

Thank you for your comments and observations. Sir Nigel Gresley was not a Fellow of the Royal Society. Only three railway engineers were awarded this honour: George Stephenson, Isambard Kingdom Brunel and Sir William Arthur Stanier.

@@crewelocoman5b161 My apologies, I misheard - I thought you had meant that having locomotives named after them was the actual honour!

@@doctordeath2332 No problem. It indeed was an honour for the designers to have a locomotive named after them . The one hundredth LNER Pacific (A4 BR 60007) was named after its designer. It's all good stuff!

The Wrenn tooling is in error! The rear splasher is not complete unlike the original.

"...The rear splasher is not complete unlike the original" To what are you referring, the original tooling or the real loco?

    • @valentinewilson9555
      @valentinewilson9555 3 місяці тому

The Duchess Pacifics should have a full rear splasher. The Wrenn model has a half splasher which is inaccurate. Also, the Wrenn loco named "Sir William Stanier FRS" should have the lower cab sheet cut away but instead has been produced with a full cab sheet. The original Hornby Dublo "Duchess of Montrose did have inaccuracies but featured the correct number of splashers over the driving wheels. The current Hornby Duchess models are the most accurate representation of this class in 00 guage.

@@valentinewilson9555 Wow, well blow me down and shiver me timbers, I really did not know any of that at all! For heaven's sake these models date from 1939, re-tweaked in the early 1950s and finally the re tooled body shell in 1959 by Hornby-Dublo which is where the rear "half splasher" appeared. Wrenn restarted production of the Hornby-Dublo tooled locos in 1966 whilst under the Lines Bros empire before jumping ship in 1970/1along with the H.D. tooling when Lines collapsed. Wrenn continued production until 1990. They did not change or retool anything, except for metalling the bogies and tender wheels along with varied liveries across the range. The splasher anomoly and front framing gap not matching up with the correct names are minor details compared to the glaringly obvious fault which seems to have passed you by, namely the ridiculously under scaled driving wheels these fine models were lumbered with! Wrenn went some way to rectifying this towards the end when a number of Coronations and a few A4s were turned out with 'Castle' and 'Royal Scot' sized drivers which significantly improved the overall appearance of these models whilst still a little underscaled. Yes, I know about the cabside sheeting on 46256/7. I went up into the cab of 46257 in 1964 shortly after the loco was withdrawn at Carlisle Upperby MPD.

Excellent video, but PLEASE keep the camera still! The constant back and forwards and up and down motion is unpleasant to watch.

I have commented on this before.ua-cam.com/video/jmE1irOVVQk/v-deo.html .I find filming to be the most challenging and difficult aspect to realise in this hobby. You see, I only have the use of one hand and all the controls on photographic are on the wrong side for me. So I apologise to you for my deficiencies in this department. There again, you have the choice not to view my uploads. Thank you for your comment.
