It was cut in this video, but some of the best writing in this episode is when the mother offers Zuko to stay for supper, to which he declines, and then she asks if he would like to help with some labor and then get supper. The mother immediately sensed that Zuko is prideful to a fault without him hardly saying anything. Zuko isn't the type to take handouts. He wants to work for anything he wants, even if that work is thiefing.
Notice what Zuko tells the kid about the dual swords, "Don't think of them as separate becasue they are not. They are just two different parts of the same whole." The creators are clearly stating something about this episode that isn't about dual swords.
Yeah, & the thing is that it seems obvious (at least to me) that Zuko KNOWS Azula isn’t lying about this & he’s repeating “Azula always lies” as a feeble attempt to convince himself that it’s not true, even though, deep down, he knows that it is. But-as you mentioned-most reactors don’t pick up on this & just assume that Azula is lying.
Season 1 ending episodes. We do in fact find that out when Iroh tells Zuko and in turn us the audience that since he lost his son he came to see Zuko as his own. Right before he goes off to infiltrate the Northern Tribe.
I kinda like how this episode shows Zuko like, stumbling, like he does a lotta good, but also bad while trying to be good? For example, giving the kid the knife was a heartfelt gesture, but the completely wrong thing to do in this situation- it almost had terrible consequences It shows Zuko, coming from a background of a military nation where being gifted a knife by his uncle (that he had taken from a general of an Earth Kingdom city he was in the process of invading!) was one of the most meaningful gestures he ever experienced So he wants to convey something of that to this child, but it only ends up inspiring more strife - something Zuko couldn't see, because he cannot comprehend the non-Fire Nation lifestyles and cultures Also kinda haunting like, again, this is a knife his war lord uncle took from a city he was invading as part of this terrible war - and he gives it to an Earth Kingdom kid to try and soothe his sorrows caused by the very same war It's deeply messed up in its own right, but Zuko cannot understand that
I love this episode. It was my fav growing up. Zuko has such great character arcs. He’s definitely my favorite character in ATLA. From the flashbacks, I don’t remember if it’s actually said but I always took it as Ursa poisoned Azulon so that he wouldn’t kill Zuko and then ran off into hiding.
@@Kickinthescience I'm not sure where I read it, but apparently the creators wanted a fourth season at some point. They talked about how Azula would go through a redemption arc where Zuko would be for her what Iroh was for him during his redemption arc. I feel like if they had made that fourth season with Azula's redemption arc, they probably would have explored Ursa's fate during that season as well.
My favourite part of this episode: the absolutely unnecessary quantity of nails that Zuko uses for one roof tile 😂😂😂 great small detail showing this boi has NO IDEA what he’s doing
Just saying, if literally anyone had contested Ozai getting the throne, he probably wouldn't have gotten it. Everyone just went along with the painfully transparent lie and went "Yeah, sure, I believe that the last words of Azulon, said in private to his second son whom he was punishing for his ambition, was that he was stripping his firstborn and favorite child of his inheritance."
Zuko reminds me of Drizzt from R. A. Salvatore's Dark elf books. A person with good moral character traits raised in a society that values power over all things even as they espouse honor and tradition.
They tell you what happens to Zuko’s mom in the comics after the show. They dont tell you in any of the shows. If ya wanna know and dont wanna buy comics, just let us know and last episode we got you 😎
Spoiler . . . . . . . . In the Avatar Comic's Ursa(Zuko's Mom)made a deal with Ozai in return for helping him quietly kill Azulon Ozai was to keep Zuko Alive( to help keep her from killing him the same way) Ursa was to leave the fire nation and she couldn't take Zuko with her.
Spoiler . . . . . . . . I think it'd be best if they read the comics AFTER they finish ATLA and right before they start TLOK (IF they decide to watch it), so idk I wouldn't want the comics to be spoiled for them.
I mean is a spoiler, but you can tell It with the clues they give to you in this episode, plus they never say what happened in any series at the moment, only comics
Iroh only mention it once when he and zuko were arriving to the North Pole “ every since I lost my son, I think of you as my own”

The "Azula always lies" line always seems to confuse reactors. They believe Zuko even though she's telling the truth about Ozai.

The way I put it is “Azula always lies… unless the truth will hurt more”

Iroh mentioned his son at the end of book 1 when he said he thinks of zuko as his own son ever since he lost his own
This episode feels like a movie fr

Zukos story is, in my opinion, the thing that took this show from "great" to "masterpiece".
The power of the writing of this show, such a major episode that doesn’t feature the main Avatar crew and instead just Zuko (other than flashbacks).
This is one of my favourite episodes ❤️ There is so much more to Zuko and Azula is a true psychopath

The comic series 'The Search' explains how it all went down. I won't say any more though to avoid spoiling it for anyone.
@@emilyprice178they should’ve put that in the show

Best episode of the serie
One of the best episodes because it's one of the few character central episodes

One of the best episodes for sure!
"did we ever learn what happened ti Zuko's mom?" DO NOT open that can of worms!!!!!

12:01 she empoisonde fire lord azulon
Isn’t that technically a comic spoiler?
@@georgerobins4110 Some reactor can already guess that she killed him
@@Taiga-16 yes, but the fact she did it with poison is a spoiler for The Search
@@georgerobins4110 I don't they're gonna read the commics but if you say so, sorry
in a avatar comic you get to know what happened to zukos mother
🔥❤️
If you want to know what happened you should read the comics. Im sure theres a dub video somewhere.
