    To me, the simple beauty in Aang not killing Ozai was because he won in a way aligned with his culture. The one Sozin committed genocide against and the one which Ozai says doesn't deserve to exist. To me, that's incredibly powerful.

      Yeah, but the lion turtle dues ex machina does make it feel a little unearned. Having to sacrifice your belief for the sake of the world can also be incredibly powerful. I get why they did it this way because it was a show directed for children first and foremost. But a story written this same way but having Aang kill Ozai could have been just as powerful if not more so imo.

    So many good things. Two things I generally don't see mentioned a lot;
    1. "to bend one's spirit, your own spirit must be unbendable"; Aang sticking to his believes of not killing until the end is what enabled him to bend Ozai's spirit
    2. Ty lee ran away from home cause she had 6 sisters who looked just like her, went to the circus to stand out and be special, now ends up joining the Kyoshi warriors who all look alike with the face paint and outfits. It shows she finally accepted she's special enough just by being yourself, even if others may seem similar on the outside

    The comet does boost the Avatar's firebending too. Also, in the Avatar state it's like all past Avatars are bending along with him using the vast knowledge they have, so of course Aang's firebending is leagues above Ozai's in that mode.

    Narratively, I love the parallel between Aang's struggle and the experience of growing up from child to young adult. Until now he's only been more of a passenger in the life set out for him whether by fate or by other people. But he finally took the reigns of his own life and decided who he was going to be moving forward. 🤷‍♀️

  • @IamnotJohnFord
    @IamnotJohnFord 10 місяців тому +8

    I wish Ozai said, " I would've gotten away with it if it wasn't for you meddling kids!1".
    Seriously, I think it's more frightening that Aang took away Ozai's bending rather than killing him. There is little that scares a bender more than losing their ability to bend. To know a guy can just do that would make your sphincter clench if you where a bender.
    People say that it was kind of a cop out that the lion turtles intervened. I don't think so. It knew Aang might fail to strike a fatal blow. So, a comprised was reached. I always thought that things were set in motion outside of what the Aang gang was doing. Something behind the curtains was occurring. Iroh obviously was getting help, even in prison, from the White Lotus members. It's how the crown came to be in his prison cell. It's how Zuko was receiving clues that set him up to understand his great grandfathers. Even Sokka learning how to use a sword was by a White Lotus member hiding in plain view.

    • @MrKingYuji
      @MrKingYuji 10 місяців тому

      I didn’t expect Aang to kill either. But he basically was knocked into the avatar state by accident, and was given the ability to bend energy instead of earning it through training or character development. Aang had to discover facets of himself and overcome personal blocks to bend earth and fire.

    • @IamnotJohnFord
      @IamnotJohnFord 10 місяців тому +1

      @@MrKingYuji It was a pretty straight forward technique. And, the fact that Aang pulled it off without dying was due to his character and all his previous training. As with the dragons, the lion turtles found Aang worthy, and gave him a vision while maybe giving him the ability to do it.
      This is, of course, speculation but I think that the lion turtle lured Aang to his "island" so he could evaluate him. No doubt Aang was being monitored as he interacted with past Avatars. Aang concluded he would have to kill Ozai. After that the island swims toward the upcoming battleground. The lion turtle could've swam back, lured Aang off the island and been done nothing else. Perhaps Aang accepting he would have to kill to save others was that final test where Aang was finally ready to let go and become enlightened.

  • @MrWhatdafuBOOM
    @MrWhatdafuBOOM 10 місяців тому +4

    Aang was in full control of the Avatar State, otherwise he wouldn't have been able to snap himself out of it on his own.
    The show itself took place in around 9 months, one season of the year corresponding to one Book.

  • @hallofguns8174

    I just want to point out, the episode was set up that every character could have died. Suki could have fallen to her death, Toph and Soka could been burned to death, Zulu could have died to the lightning, and Katara could have suffocated in the ice taking dow Azula.
    That would have put Aang in a position where because of his choice to not kill Ozie, all his friends died instead.

    @Flash33c 10 місяців тому

    While the show itself wraps up fairly nicely, some people view Aang using Energybending on Ozai as a bit of a cop-out since it was only introduced in the finale. Also, the novels The Promise, The Search, The Rift, Smoke and Shadow, North and South and Imbalance take place after the show and are canon. They go into what happens after the war is over, such as the issues surrounding the colonies and Zuko's struggle to properly rule as Fire Lord. There are also other standalone stories, such as Suki, Alone (detailing her time in The Boiling Rock pre-rescue), Toph Beifong's Metalbending Academy, Katara and the Pirate's Silver, Azula and the Spirit Temple, Sisters and the upcoming The Bounty Hunter and the Tea Brewer.
    Fun fact time:
    *Part 4 was dedicated to Michael's dad Dante and is also the only episode to use a different track in the credits.
    *Aang and Zuko's formal admission of their friendship contrasts Sozin and Roku (enemies turned friends, friends turned enemies respectively).
    *This is the only time in S3 where Aang enters the Avatar State, the third time he does it more than once in an episode & the third time he's speaking in it.
    *The titles for part 4 and S1E1 reflect & reference Aangs growth & evolution throughout the series (The Boy in the Iceberg and Avatar Aang).

    Aang wasnt ready outside of the Avatar state. but IN the Avatar state, he essentially has ALL the powers of ALL past Avatars. this was the 2nd time Aang WILLINGLY and CONSCIOUSLY went into the Avatar state (the first time in Ba Sing Se, he was "killed" by Azula quickly so it really didnt count) so he was in COMPLETE control of ALL THAT POWER.. Ozai stood ZERO chance at that point.
