I have a tank with fish already, and i want to add the soil. I don’t have another tank to place the fish in for a whole month. What should i do? Should i remove the fish every once in a month while i set the soil by section over the months? (for example half a cup of soil per month) so the change in perimeters won’t be drastic?

And not to mention that i added fish right after i am done setting up my aquarium with aqua soil haha, but none of them died

It depends on soil you use and plants you
Use . If you got heavy root Feeders like Amazon swords or crypto then you might have to change the soil more frequently or you can use root tabs.
And don't try to add new soil when water and fishes are in the tank .

Word on the street is don't cap your aqua soil and then your liquid fertilizers or fish and food waste recharge your aqua soil with nutrients. The moment you cap it with finely packed sand, the soil loosed that ability which is one of its main benefits.

tips: 1. ADA recommends filter that can filter the whole amount of water in 15 minutes. that means the whole water is to be filtered 4 times in an hour.
    2. Use biological filter media to reduce ammonia and increase beneficial bacteria who helps to reduce ammonia too.
    3. use recommended light with recommended kelvin. they say for a new tank 6 hours of light is enough. but you have keep close eye on the algae growth.
THis are the few points we must keep in mind if we are beginners. there are so many advice, these are very few among those.
you're friend may be using a wrong kelvin light or she were not aware of the algae growth as black beard algae is the worst type of algae and happens if you're totally ignorant.
Tell her to use a ADA BIO RIO media. That will mean a lot to her aquarium. It is an one time investment for your beloved plants.
    Happy aquaplanting :)

Honestly, I don’t think color temperature has anything to do with the of problem at all. Plants really don’t care all that much, we are mostly buying better lights to please our eyes. Unless we are talking sea tanks and corals, freshwater aquariums can thrive under mere Edison’s bulbs.
To me, this tank has an obvious issue: it’s a soiled tank with little to no vegetation. Exposed soil, that is! You know, it actually is in a good shape for what it is, I am surprised it did not turn into a spirulina farm considering the soil is unused and exposed.. After all, the only purpose of soil substrate is to feed plants with nutrients. It’s supposed to be heavily planted. If there is not enough consumption, algae will inevitably take care of the excess. And that’s actually good, without algae these nutrients will actually reach concentration high enough to poison fish. Most algae species are not threatening fish, they are just ugly and compete with plants, so this is why we fight it. Here we have what? 5-6 stems? That really won’t cut it! Sure, there can be more issues which aggravate the problem, like co2/nitrate/phosphate balance being waaaaay of Redfield, photoperiod being too long or intensity too high, maybe pH/GH/KH being wrong, who knows. And yes, color temperature might be far from ideal too, assuming that ideal even exists. Chances are though, it’s all of that because exposed soil derails anything without almost no plants whatsoever. This is why the author covered it and the situation improved. Now it looks like good old old-school tank. Modest, sure, but it’s more healthy. Plant more plants, and the situation will improve further, does not even have to be ADA style, might as well try low-tech Walstad. Ideal color temperature does not really matter here. It’s won’t solve any issues here and I am sorry, but I find that advice outright misleading.
Speaking of ideal color temperatures. You know, color temperature in kelvins is a very brief and simplified way to describe light. Waaay too simplified. In the reality it kinda does not exist. Each light source has own specific spectrum, you might purchase RGBW LED strip and program it to produce light matching the temperature of an Edison’s lightbulb, but they will have fundamentally different spectrums. This is why you can have two different lights with the same temperature, which can identically illuminate white sheet of paper, but play very differently on green and red plants, colorful fish, ect. Or human skin and clothes, this is why photographers care about good light sources. Or paints, this is why museums and art galleries try to purchase the best lights available. This is why a cheapo fixture is cheapo and expensive ADA light is expensive - first one uses regular mass produced source which might be crap, and the second one is using specifically chosen source which is know for good looks and healthy growth. But color temperature alone does not cut it.
There are more ways to describe that, like CRI for instance tries to match a spectrum with some kind of reference, so a 100% CRI light source will match the ref and idk, 70% CRI will be obviously far from it. But again, that’s a brief and simple way to describe a really complex thing. Which does not really matter for plants in most cases.
You see, even things as harsh as sodium lamps were successfully used in vertical farming. That’s an industry of growing plants indoors! You might say they are being discontinued, that’s true, but the reason they came out of fashion has nothing to do with the properties of light they produce, it’s the waste heat and power inefficiency which makes them outdated. Plants don’t care it’s harsh sodium lamp.
Sure, some species are more sensitive towards specific wavelengths, different ways of photosynthesis exist, that affects both plants and algae, this is why some users of programmable LED strips might want to experiment with what they have, but that has nothing to do with color temperature, you are altering the spectrum, and there is no such thing as constant color temperature in nature, it always fluctuates. Cloudy day? It’s colder. Sunny day? It’s warmer. Sunrise or sunset? It goes all over the place. Color temperature in a shade of a tree can be substantially different from that under direct sunlight, can even have a green or cyan tint to it. Also keep in mind that natural bodies of water are rarely crystal clear, some environments are actually rather murky, and that too substantially changes properties of light for both aquatic plants and algae. And each change will alter the spectrum in own way. I won’t completely disregard the importance of light properties, it can still affect how plants grow, especially the red ones. And it’s important for species with very precise cycle, like corals. But that definitely does not look like the cause of an issue here. There are definitely much bigger problems which need fixing, something which a light source, massive filter and bacteria supplements won’t fix no matter how good they are. That’s exposed nutritious substrate without any noteworthy consumption. And as we see, merely covering the substrate with inert sand improved things a lot. You don’t need ADA products for that. Plant more, and you’ll get even better situation. This tank is very far from what ADA is doing, so the majority of their recommendations do not really apply here.
I mean, ADA is doing good work, and their recommendations are all true, but they all exist in context of ADA tank, and they usually boil down to “use our amazing ADA products”. Which is understandable, they are a company after all, but not every beginner is willing to buy that. They are usually beyond the point of diminishing returns. Also, everyone’s mileage may vary because certain things may not be beneficial for some tanks, especially if they deviate form ADA guidelines a lot of do not follow them at all. ADA is good for the beginners with money and ability to follow all their recommendations, step by step, by the book, from day one. It’s like Amano-sama himself is walking you through the process. ADA also is good for the people with their own established experience who know they are doing. You know, for the mature aquarium keepers. Lots of ADA products are better than alternatives.
But for somebody in between, well, that may not be so good. Especially in case of a beginner who is not equipped with knowledge to set priorities properly and does not follow the procedure either. The procedure exists for a reason, and unless the person knows what’s going on, an unlikely situation for a beginner, things can go sideways. Set the priorities wrong, and that will further aggravate the problem, to the point one can throw a fortune at ADA and still end up being disappointed because they are buying the most marked product, not necessarily the product they really need.

Then after a month all your sand(being smaller grains than the aqua soil) have sunk down into your substrate. No need to cap. Just don’t be lazy and go your maintenance.

Agreed. I learn from trial an error.
I NEVER ever put sand on soil. lolol
First layer with tropica substrate then put soil over it.
Then you need to load the tank with plants.
I've had more success when my tanks are filled with plants.
From this video I see one of the problems is there is barely any plants in the tank.
I load my tanks with plants especially with this kind of substrate.
Plants are doing good, but i'm waiting for my co2 system to arrive because I want to see if co2 really enhances the plants in my tank.
Soil Substrate is not for beginners unless you are willing to be patient and understand that there will be stages of failure before you get it right.
Im making a lot of mistakes, but I am learning a lot of the science of a planted aquarium.
Its not an overnight magic pill for flourishing plants.
I have 5 tanks and one of them is sitting right in front of my computer desk in the middle of the room and that is the tank I do all my testing and gathering of information to get my balance right before I set up in my larger tank.
This video is still ok for beginners learning the basics.
      cheers

@@phoenix063071 can I do it like half corner of the ground is sand and the other half is aquasoil? Then I would only plant on the aquasoil?

    • @phoenix063071
      @phoenix063071 3 роки тому

@@gabriella8173 definitely you can do that. The method of putting anything on the soil is not something I would ever recommend.
Especially if you ever want to change your tank and remove soil, you'll never be able to salvage the soil once the sand blends in with it. However I do separate substrate. I built one of my plant tank where I put natural stones substrate in middle of the tank flowing to the back of tank and then on either side of that I put soil. Nice layout.
      Enjoy !!

@@phoenix063071 so exposed aquasoil (no other agregates on top) is fine as long as I'm deligent in water change as recommended from the comment above to avoid too much algae right? Can I put algae eater snail right away or should I wait for weeks? I just don't want to put so much chemicals so I would go for snails to eat the algae.

    • @phoenix063071

@@gabriella8173 Me personally I never put any substrate on top or under my soil. The only thing I do is I take a few flourish tabs and crush it in to a fine powder and sprinkle on bottom of tank before adding in the soil. Also when you add the soil do not rinse it. Put it in dry. Never rinse the soil. There is alot of debates whether to put substrate on the soil, but I do what works for me. Also as I said, if I ever want to switch tanks, I can take soil out and not worry of it being mixed with anything in it.
And I've tried testing that method and I found that putting substrate on top of the soil crushes the soil down after time in to a mud and compacts it and leaves it with no proper circulation in the soil bedding.
This is my own personal observation though and I didn't like it. If you are putting plants, then spray the soil first to make it wet then put your plants and add water slowly.
If you put the soil then add water and try to add the plants, you'll have a hot mess.
Or you can do what I did which is called a dry start.
This is the method where you set the tank up with the soil and whatever hardscape you want and plant your plants in the soil with the water level under the soil line.
In other words, just keep the soil wet but not puddled with water.
Keep the top of tank sealed with saran wrap and run the lights for 14 hours a day for a few weeks until plant anchors their roots in the soil.
This is a cool method because you need to do no co2, no water changes, no heaters nothing.
Once a day I open the saran wrap to let the air in the tank and then I mist plants with a water bottle.
Once I seal it, the condensation self waters the plants.
      that's
And when you are ready to finally add water and set filters up, the plants wont uproot itself from the soil because they have strengthen themselves in the soil during the dry start period. As for water changes, I do 3 times a week water change only 1/4 tank. very fast and small changes. No matter what you will encounter algae. However, you can keep the algae from getting out of hand by keeping the lighting to 6 or 7 hours a day in the start up. Watch how you fert your tank and position of tank for example if its by the window then you will have issues. But important is the water changes and trimming your plants.
And when you do your water changes do not touch the soil. You can hover your siphon above the soil to suck up loose debris, but do not touch the soil.
I'm not a fan of snails because they multiply in your tank and its hard to get rid of them, but they are harmless to plant. And only a few are good at algae cleanup.
I use amano shrimp and cherry shrimp. And octocinclus. And me personally, I added them right away. This method is frowned upon, but I have no issues with it. You can have the most well established tank on the planet and when you add livestock to it, they can still die. So I just make sure to prep my tank and add the stock in. And do my disciplined water changes to maintain good water quality.
