Crossing Bass Strait to Tasmania | Ep 5 - Bass by Kayak

  • Bass by Kayak follows Beau and a band of merry men across Australia's Bass Strait in a Sea Kayak. In Episode 5, the lads edge ever closer to the end of their journey. Well-oiled, laughing at nothing, comfortable (but with sore backsides) and with the weather gods laying it on, they speed towards Little Mussleroe Bay on the NE tip of Tasmania.

    These guys are the true kayak kings. Me and my buddies all have Hobie PA-12-14's sit on top fishing or recreational kayaks. We do 5 day camp/fish trips 4 times a year. I fun fish usually 3 days a week. But we all have motors, and electronics, add-ons, and accessories. These guys are real kayakers, who know and deal with weather, large crossings. Sea kayaks are beautiful. 🛶 🌊🙏

    I've been following Beau for years but have never come across his Bass by Kayak series until today, stumbling upon it by chance while trying to figure out for a voiceover I need to make if "Bass" is pronounced as "Bass" or "Bass". A few other sources on UA-cam suggested it's "Bass" but as soon as I saw this video I knew I'd be able to trust Beau's pronunciation of "Bass". Many thanks for this clarification. I'm going to complete the recording now, and then I'll be back to watch the full video!

    Hi, how big is the falcon sail on the epic kayak? 1meter or 1.3 meters? I have a 1 meter sail, on a tempest 170. Not sure if I should get a bigger sail. How does it handle on big winds?

    • @BeauMiles
      @BeauMiles  7 років тому

      Hi Behrens,
      From memory it was a 1m as I had a 1.2 and from memory it was the biggest of the sails...I wouldn't go more than 1.2 as it was a boat tipper in 15+ knots, where-is the 1m could be kept upright with stronger winds and gusts.

    • @FalconSails
      @FalconSails 5 років тому

      The Falcon Sail in this video is 1.0 square meters.
      If you are wondering what size Falcon Sail is best for an adventure like this, a 1.0 Falcon Sail is going to give the best wind range sweet spot. So if you carry 1 size sail the 1.0 is for sure the way to go. Typically I carry both a 1.0 and a 1.4. They are very easy to change, so I can pick the best sail for the conditions and make it happen. If it is a big wind day above 10mph, the 1.0 is the best choice, if its a light wind day, some people want a bigger sail. But still if you have 1 size sail for a sea kayak, the 1.0 is the way to go. Once you hit maximum hull speed, extra power is not going to do anything positive except teach you how to handle more power. Learning how to handle the power is a good thing, but not so good on big crossings and when you are focusing on other objectives.
