Haircut hater gets a makeover by wife

  • I hate haircuts based on a horrible experience at the hairdressers as a 10 year old. All the poking and prodding and sitting drove me nuts. Still does. Relying on mum, girlfriends, myself, mates and now Helen, I’ve saved a lot of money and had shoddy hair ever since. After looking particularly crap recently, I decided to have a very fast makeover at the hands of my wife, who’s learning how to cut hair on my head.

I cut my own hair and get compliments often, so, I now save $250. every 3 months on color and cut, since 1998. It all started when my mom thought she could do the cut herself, based on a nice hair cut on a Vogue cover, so she took out her DULL garden scissors, and said, "Come on scissors," as she cut through my very very long straight hair, and now, I am able to keep it trimmed and fresh whenever I want, myself. I've saved a fortune. Add that up!

Been cutting my own hair for years (including a trimmed beard), I currently use a Phillips 9-1 trimer. It's a very quick and efficient process that you do while standing (no sitting involved) in front of a mirror over a basin (using a bin to catch most of the offcuts). 9 mm on the back and sides, 16 mm on the top, then the beard trimmer set at 5 mm. A quick clean of the basin area and a quick shower afterward and you are good to go.

I trained as a female hairdresser for 2 years but didn’t continue it, didn’t enjoy doing it enough. I then self taught myself how to cut men’s hair and every month for the last 8 years I’ve cut my partners hair and shaped his beard and moustache. I love doing it, it’s like a bonding session between us and saves us money. I’ve also cut and dyed my own hair the last 11 years and has saved me more money than I can imagine

I despise getting my hair cut, but I like my hair to be cut (when it gets so long it hurts my neck) My MO is to have a friend cut it the night before an athletic endeavor-give them a few beers and a pair of scissors. Works great. My alternative MO is having my kiddo cut it. Teenagers can be super helpful at times.

I'm missing out on employment at the moment because I don't want to get a haircut. It's been a year since it was last cut and nearly 3 since a barber cut it. I can't tell you the exact amount it would cost me now because for some reason a barber is somewhere between $35 to $50 but the last cut I had was $25 and I used to get a monthly cut, so I think I would have saved roughly $900. I do have to get it cut soon because I am going to give it to a wig maker for someone who needs it. I'll also do a charity event for the Westpac rescue chopper at the same time. They saved my life a year ago.

You need to get some clippers with a guard. For quickest way to do a haircut is clippers with a guard (I use #5) all over and then for the sides you use clippers again but this time you use a smaller guard (#3 or #2). Then you won’t have to use those kitchen scissors that make your audience cringe. Get some nice clippers too ones that are made in Japan, Germany, Korea and they’ll last you forever if you oil them every now and again.

I bought an electric hair trimmer. I use it to cut my hair, and I get everything done with it except for cleaning up the cut line on the back of my neck. I have my wife do that, and it takes her about 2 minutes.
I had her do all of the cutting one time and she couldn't handle the stress.
I find that funny because I'd cut her hair in a milli-second, and I wouldn't have a single worry about it.
My process is pretty simple, I go over every square inch with a number 8 guard. Then I run the number 3 guard down the back of my head from the equator. I finish with the number 2 guard over my ears.
If my wife ever goes comatose and I do get a chance to cut her hair, I'll have to come up with a different method than what I use on mine. But I know that by the third time I'll have it down.
The cutter has paid for itself numerous times over, and I don't have to leave the house.
