yes it is ,,this is some of the worst news in years...Dude had a big heart and had soul and passion to his playing and singing..The man will be missed..
Saw CRB probably close to ten times. They toured the Mid-Atlantic frequently. Neal always was accessible after the show (Chris disappeared) and every time was putting up his own gear. Would talk to you as he was tearing down. Huge respect for the man. Such a tragic loss. My wife attended his tribute concert outside of White Plains. We saw Circles six months after, and Adam McDougal was still emotional about it. Huge respect for him also.
My sister knew Neal and introduced me. He would always sit with us and chat after gigs until the bus left at CRB shows. On the off-times they had roadies, he would always excuse himself and go do it himself when he saw them mishandling his pedal box.. lol... What a good due, and so humble. CATS groove was unbelievable. Dan is no slouch on bass. EDIT TO ADD - Neal's music knowledge was unparalled... He shared some Spotify lists that were mind-blowingly good, most things I'd never heard before.
Blessings to Neal and to John, both of whom, like many of us, have suffered. I really enjoyed hearing Neal talk about his gear, especially his special guitar, and John had interesting questions.
Fair travels Neal. Had to revisit this after learning of Neal's passing. You are and will be missed brother! Solace to all the fans who are feeling his loss. "Like water on the ground, we will find our way"
I came back to this John because of Neal. Great interview with him that included your knowledge and shared opinions. I love that those last few minutes you gave him the space to share his philosophies.
I know it might be a challenge, but can you maybe do a rundown on dead and company when they start touring again in spring? I want to see that soooooo bad.
Pretty clear to me what a kindred spirit Neal Casal was. Not one to worship my guitar heroes but between him and John Bolinger I can't think of two guys I would rather hang with and learn from. RIP Neal, your playing will continue to influence mine for the rest of my life. The world is a better place because of you.
Back in the days of the Black Crowes, I had a nice relationship with the band. I was lucky enough to supply them with a number of guitars, and they were nice enough to sell or consign some of their gear to us when they got off of tour. I was lucky enough to spend some time at their rehearsals and partied a bit with them. While some artists are not exactly friendly, The Crowes knew their gear. I sold Rich a nice vintage Esquire and a '64 335 with the custom made plaque. Great guys, and they always hooked me up with tix for their shows. Got to see them from the front row several nights in a row when they did a bunch of East Coast shows featuring Jimmy Page. What a great band! Oh...also got to have a beer with Kate Hudson...Amstel Light....at 10:30 in the morning at SIR studios when they were nice enough to send a car to pick me up and bring some guitars over. Again, great guys to deal with.....
Brother Neal! Your sound IS indeed very clean and wonderful. Amazing, really. Thanks for laying down the tunes, CRB, that brings hours of bliss to my world!
I learned that we lost Neal from Eddie Trunk yesterday. Neal and Eddie Trunk were very tight friends. Rest easy Neal, rest in peace brother guitarist...
I know this is old but I just watched the Black Crows "Behind The Music" on UA-cam. It's hysterical, Chris Robinson interviews and what he did in the early years is down right comical. Probably the most entertaining ones I've watched.
Chris Robinson seems to have a reputation for being hard to talk to and occasionally stand offish, but I dunno, he seems totally sweet and personable here, if a little out to lunch in the best way possible. Real cool video.
Has a reputation of being difficult to understand too. When someone(John) has to pause for 5 seconds and then say "ah yeah I get it man", he really doesn't get it. Haha
I met Chris backstage in Detroit about 5 years ago and I can tell you that once I mentioned "Virtue and Vice" from By Your Side, he looked me dad in the eye and said "you know that one?" And then I mentioned the Brotherhood, And after that we had total eye contact for about 20 minutes and just talked about music. It was amazing...My wife said "what did you say to him, he didn't look away from you the whole time...." I said " we just talked about music...." maybe that's they key to getting him to talk....
I’m just discovering Neal now and appreciating his great talents! I don’t know what demons were chasing him, but the music world sure lost an awesome dude! R.I.P. and I’d sure love to jam with him sometime in the hereafter! I’ve always loved the Robinsons ‘cos i’m a Georgia boy!🎸
I can watch these jamband guys for hours. When you have to play for 3 hours you have to have a serious rig. GREAT stuff from both Chris and Neal. (Mule, UM, Trey, etc.)
The "New Grateful Dead" lots of custom guitars and equipment, quartz crystal frets, and lots of "you knows?"....so many times it leaves you exhausted and wondering..Neal Casal's explanation of his equipment demonstrates the Grand Canyon division between mortals and ordinary geniuses, guitar nerds and Albert Einstein's theories of relativity rolled into layman quantum physics x 5 squared to the tenth power.
I agree to an extent but if all the pedals are wired good you shouldn't lose much if any tone, volume most definitely but a nice boost can fix that easily. I almost always play through 5-10 pedals at least with most off and don't notice any loss of tone aside from a slight volume drop. The pedals just need to be bypassed properly and you're good to go and even cheap pedals are now usually. Also the amount of cords you need to use to go through 10-20 pedals probably makes a bigger difference then the pedals when bypassed.
This was the same dude who was in the Black Crowes, or am I thinking of something else because of the last name? Also, would you guys ever consider doing a Rig Rundown of Metallica since they're probably on tour for their latest album _Hardwired... To Self-Destruct_?
Premier Guitar I didn't expect to hear back from you guys, your Rig Rundowns are my favourites from the channel. But yeah, let's hope to get the Kings of Thrash. I'd love to see James, Kirk and Rob walk us through their gear (And I say that as a huge Metallica fan, James, Kirk and Cliff Burton are some of my biggest influences for guitar and bass)
+Andrew Pappas Yes, this is the same Chris Robinson from The Black Crowes, his brother Rich is also a Robinson, also in the Black Crowes, so maybe you were thinking of him?
These Klon Clones that get made in Hong Kong and Korea are great pedals. I've had one on my board for 7+ years, for the other high end OD's on my board, it's the Klon Clone that is always on it. It's not laughable at all, they really are very good and nicely put together inside.
agreed i wish they'd branch out and check the other players gear too but i know people will be pissed its not guitar rigs. Thats why i feel like we'll never get a Railroad Earth rig rundown....which i would love to see because there are so many instruments in that band!
EQD bought a vintage pedal off my buddy. 1k+ price tag. My buddy put up the insurance. They had it for two weeks, took it all apart, and then sent it back for a refund. So, my buddy was out the 400 bucks for insurance and got back a vintage pedal that no longer works. Real shady shit from a company that pretends to be community oriented.
This Rig Rundown of the Chris Robinson Brotherhood obliterates brother Rich's band Magpie Salute ...far more innovation and vision....to quote Rumi..."Somewhere between Right and Wrong there is a Garden, I will meet you there.."
As much as i love marc fuckin ford, neal casals a hell of a musician and his leads are truly awesome, plenty of swagger without been a germaniumfuzzylover, wich is great btw, and also Chris is the best singer for richs music, period... Magpie is good, but crb does it god damn right. Neal could ve been easily a monster crowes axeman back in the day, but i'm glad Isaiah s un charge currently, nothing but the right guy for that music. Fords the man, but not so irreplaceable imho.
I still don't get how the built-in effect loop on the guitar works. I can see only 2 jack in/out so if I have to plug my guitar into a fuzz, like he said, and the come back to the guitar so I can send the signal into the volume control, like he said ... then I'll need a third way out to finally go to the amp. But I don't see 3 jack in/out. Am I missing something here?
Correct. For an OBEL (on board electronic loop) system, The jack with nothing plugged into it is a TRS jack that would go to a splitter (A/B) box on the floor usually containing a buffer. He said his buffer was on the guitar, which is also an option. After the wiring for the switching on the guitar is done, the signal is routed to the tip side of the TRS cable. That feeds into the output jack (A) of the A/B box on the floor. Next the signal is routed through the entire pedal board and back to the input jack (B) of the A/B box. The signal then travels back up the ring side of the TRS cable. The signal is the routed to the Volume knob of the guitar and back to the second jack of the guitar which is a normal TS style jack and heads to the amplifier.
Why run a 100 watter on "2" instead of a less powerful amp on "4-5"? Even for really nice clean tone "2" is usually below the sweet spot imo. very fun rundown! well done.
honestly you can have beautiful clean headroom without 100 watts into a 4x12. It's overkill. The best clean tube tones do not reside at "2". The amp is idling, tubes barely working.
You don't want the power tubes to be working to a great extent to achieve a clean tone...these guys could buy any low watt amp they like but choose to use the 100 watts tops.. are you saying you know better than them as to their clean set up? ok
Eli Friedmann - I think they are slowly feeling it out to get louder occasionally. At this venue maybe not. But they feel they need that extra power on standby maybe?
It is a matter of preference based on your desired outcome related to the headroom you want supporting your clean tone. For example, running a Twin clean sounds much different than running a Deluxe clean (I have both). The Twin has much more presence and fullness, but you will not get that natural overdriven sound that the Deluxe will bring. You need to rely on good pedals to get your overdriven tone, and you can take people's heads off if you are not in a large enough venue. I have seen CRB in several venues, including a club (Belly Up Tavern, Solana Beach CA) and a larger theatre (Observatory North Park, San Diego CA). At both shows the guitar tones were impeccable and not overwhelming as they scaled the gear to the venue. That is why it is critical different rigs for different gigs. I cannot run my 100 watt Lone Star with a Marshall half stack at a club that holds 100 people. Even my Matchless Lightning can be too much. So, I sometime use my 52 Tweed Deluxe, Fender Blues Junior, or Mesa TA-15 for smaller venues depending on the stage, set list, and relative security of the surroundings. I can replace a Blues Junior easily; my 52 Deluxe, not so much....
Chris seen down to earth guy. this is what I like about such musician like him . zakk wylde. and so many more. once they get invited for an interview rig rundown . they never show arrogance like other musicians do
With the sad news of Neal’s passing, coming back to this rig rundown is a real joy. RIP Neal.
Me too.
yes it is ,,this is some of the worst news in years...Dude had a big heart and had soul and passion to his playing and singing..The man will be missed..
I wonder what the reason was..i think it would help people to know. Sucks for a musician to go out like that without an understanding.

Chris:

This is the best rig rundown.
Chris is very nice I met him last year and was so nervous because of the things I've heard but he truly could not have been nicer.
YES!
Blessings to Neal and to John, both of whom, like many of us, have suffered. I really enjoyed hearing Neal talk about his gear, especially his special guitar, and John had interesting questions.

RIP Neal. A big loss for everyone. Nice to visit this rig rundown again and see him.
I've got the same owl statue. It transparently boosts the low mids and scares squirrels away.

Neal is a special player. He always brings the absolute best out of projects he's involved in.
This is great! Would love to see a Marc Ford Rig Rundown as well!!
I like how talkative Chris was. I know he was clearly stoned but he seemed genuinely into the rig rundown.
Of course who wouldn't? Also who could be a dick to John?
Thanks PG for such a nice in depth interview and rundown of this amazing band, thanks John!
One of the most informative Rig Rundowns I've seen. RIP Neal
Been listening to Neal’s Circles Around the Sun project all week; wonderful musician with great feel and instinct. Just a terrible loss.
almost an hour!!!!! SWEEET!!!!!!! nicely done premier guitar and THANK YOU john bollinger! (by the way john, the sensei article
