      this is a ridiculous statement. of course with that much evidence, the police would arrest and the courts would convict.
      But seeing as this didn't happen, and there wasn't really any evidence before Marty died, the police couldn't do anything.
      Also, there is the real possibility that Marty was innocent

      I can imagine the next story being Marty was found with a bloody knife in his hand 13 witnesses had seen him do it, and he said to the police "I'm glad I ki lled the bas tard!". And the police still felt their wasn't enough evidence and ordered the victims family to pay to dry clean the blood off Marty's Jacket.
      This is a Blackadder reference but you could imagine it.

    • @whynothanks2047
      @whynothanks2047 2 роки тому +317

      Initially I was inclined to agree with you, but upon further thought I think maybe the owners of the cabins no longer wanted the campsite to be associated with a horrible event. Or, maybe too many people were going ghost hunting/loitering around the site in a way that was either unsavoury or unsafe. I think it really depends on who ordered/encouraged the cabin to be demolished, I wish the boys had looked into that! I think that’s where the answer lies. Tbh, if something like that happened on my property, I’d destroy every structure & start from scratch.

    The guy moves out of state, writes a letter to his ex-wife confessing to the murders. Admits to a therapist that he murdered the 4 people and left his son and the people in the room with him alive. Gee, I wonder who it could be! Either his ex-wife was an elaborately skilled manipulator or he murdered the 4 people in the cabin. I'm gonna believe the later.

      His wife doesn’t sit right with me. Whenever there is something that is possibly incriminating her (receiving Marty’s letter and counseling with the sheriff), she says she “doesn’t recall it”, which is a weird excuse to use twice. As well as one of the murder weapons being dumped while the rest were left at the crime scene. I’ve been rewatching the episode a few times and the more I think about it the less sense it makes. It seems like the three of them each have different stories, which leads me to believe that the sheriff was somehow connected to the Smart’s in terms of the murder. I don’t know tho, maybe I’m too obsessed.

    • @baumer2504
      @baumer2504 Рік тому +4

      @@LP-ej7ez I think it's only natural to become obsessed. You want things to make sense and they clearly don't. It's difficult to live with something like this when there isn't any evidence to connect to a suspect. But when there's a lot of people with different accounts and evidence that points in every direction it's hard to get past it.

    The "I've paid the price for your love" part of the letter sounds like the delusions of a self-justifying abuser more than an indicator of Marilyn's feelings. It'd be totally in line for a spousal abuser for Marty to have convinced himself that Sue was poisoning Marilyn against him, and that killing Sue would have ~*magically*~ broken her influence over his wife, making her amenable to reconciliation again.
    Marilyn's memory loss and/or reluctance to give evidence against her husband, even after his death, read like symptoms of PTSD, which I would wager she has a massive case of 😔

    *7:13* psychologists believe that part of the reason why serial killers stay "close" after committing their murders, i.e. call and leave anonymous tips, return to the crime scene, write taunting letters to police, keep "souvenirs" etc. is because they are trying to re-live the adrenaline and excitement they experienced while they were committing the murders. Once it's all over, they lose that feeling, and desperately want to get it back.

    With the letter from Marty Smartt, I think it could've been him telling his wife (even tho she never got the letter) that he killed for her. So it wasn't his wife who wanted it, but the way he saw it was that they needed to be killed. And it helped his marriage in his mind. But in her mind their marriage wasn't fixed so he was asking what else he has to do for her (like to win her back).

    They didn't really bring up Marilyn's inconsistent behaviour or why she acted in the way she did. Honestly, I think it was the safest way for her to try and get the truth out while being terrified of her murdering ex-husband, i.e. saying she doesn't 'recall' certain events or letters, but confirms his handwriting. I get the feeling she tried to have the evidence speak for itself without putting the bullseye on her own back. Too bad the police just hosed down the facts. I don't think she's involved in the coverup.

    Well it seems to me that almost every crime that remains unsolved is a result of bad/faulty investigation on the part of the police where in they either lose evidence, ignore evidence, not inspect the crime scene properly, not interrogate the suspects and witnesses properly and such. Just pointing out an observation. It's not that the perpetrators of the crime are super geniuses to cover their tracks; it's just that the people trying to nab them didn't do their job right.

    I just drove through Keddie when I was traveling from Quincy to Lake Almanor. I looked over at the building along the road that says Keddie Resort and thought of this case.
    One week later in mid July 2021, the Dixie Fire broke out and the fire went right through the neighborhood where Cabin 28 once stood. According to the burn map the flames are showing they were right across the street from where the Sharp’s used to live. I hope some of the area managed to survive. It’s a beautiful area, lots of pine trees and the Spanish Creek runs nearby. As of right now (Aug 2021) the fire is still burning and has claimed 250k acres.

    In a taped interview of Marty Smartt by a DOJ officer, The DOJ officer questions Marty if he thinks his stepson Justin, who was sleeping over in cabin 28 that night could have seen or heard anything, and Marty answers talking about Justine, "He is quiet. He could have noticed something without me detecting him.". Then Marty quickly changes the subject. In my opinion, Marty just placed himself inside cabin 28 during the murders, and Marty himself realizes it too. ua-cam.com/video/1nK-dIY2c1s/v-deo.html
