*7:13* psychologists believe that part of the reason why serial killers stay "close" after committing their murders, i.e. call and leave anonymous tips, return to the crime scene, write taunting letters to police, keep "souvenirs" etc. is because they are trying to re-live the adrenaline and excitement they experienced while they were committing the murders. Once it's all over, they lose that feeling, and desperately want to get it back.
You guys should do a series called 'Buzzfeed Solved' Where you talk about real gruesome crimes that are solved, but Ryan puts forward all of the suspects and Shane has to guess/deduce who the culprit is. Then Ryan reveals the true culprit.
The "I've paid the price for your love" part of the letter sounds like the delusions of a self-justifying abuser more than an indicator of Marilyn's feelings. It'd be totally in line for a spousal abuser for Marty to have convinced himself that Sue was poisoning Marilyn against him, and that killing Sue would have ~*magically*~ broken her influence over his wife, making her amenable to reconciliation again. Marilyn's memory loss and/or reluctance to give evidence against her husband, even after his death, read like symptoms of PTSD, which I would wager she has a massive case of 😔
Guy: Confesses Police: Not enough evidence edit: ik that when someone confesses it doesn’t always mean it they are guilty but i feel like there was some evidence against the guy at least enough to convict him or at least put him on trail
The whole town was afraid of Murderin Marty. I imagine him being some scary abusive man who held them all at gunpoint in a bar. Including the police. @@White_Recluse there were 60 people living in the village. I stayed in one of those places for three months, nearest supermarket was 45 minutes away, I had to walk to the family corner market over a narrow scary bridge, one of my coworkers died in a ravine, drove right into it. Similar set up , they were living in the California wilderness. It's not like the Zodiac in San Francisco. California is enormous like three or four states big. It's not all a city. People disappear and die of exposure here too. Still.
@@White_Recluse to put this in perspective the place was so isolated a car from the early 1970s was parked and rotting in the middle of the forest, Im guessing where someone died forty or fifty years ago, saw it on a hike. This is the kind of place they were in. They fuck hell know who did it. Their combined elementary and high school probably had 17 total children.
Terrifying that only 66 people live here, that's my junior and senior year classes combined. You'd know everyone really well. Someone there knows who did it. I'm telling you.
I’ve always felt really bad for what Tina went through. She most likely witnessed the murders of her family members and then was snatched away and eventually was murdered herself. What a horrible thing for a child to go through. I have a daughter who is just a few months younger than Tina was at the time of the murders….it just breaks my heart. I hope she wasn’t harmed too much before she died.
The fact that Marty Smartt apparently had a boiling hatred for Johnny Sharp, and that he left his son alive in another room, as well as Justin Smartt claiming to have seen the suspects means that it seems like they intentionally ignored them. The wife also claimed to have seen her husband and friend burning a hammer at 2 am. All the murder weapons were left in the house because they belonged to the Sharp’s except the one Marty Smartt owned, his own hammer. I mean case closed if you ask me
It’s amazing how the former sheriff acts all high and mighty about everyone apparently solving the case and called him out on corruption, all while knowing he and his department actively made it impossible to solve the case
Having personal experience sleeping/living in the woods for 60% of my life, the woods are actually REALLY quite. You could hear footsteps 50 meters away. Unless those boys are the heaviest sleepers in the history of the world, they'd probably hear the footsteps (unless it was raining), or the people screaming as there being stabbing.
The only things that wake me up in the night are my cat eating/chewing paper or my cat puking. Otherwise, I am super dead to the world when I sleep. I can see them sleeping through it.
The killer also could have threatened to kill the young boys if the didn’t keep quiet. With such a small town it’s likely the whoever killed them knew the family. By making them keep quiet with the threat of killing the kids it would give him a heightened sense of control and power. Either that or for some reason while they had no problem killing the older of the family they didn’t want to kill the others. Who knows maybe it was someone who knew and liked the little boy staying over or his family. There’s a lot of reasons and ways the boys were spared and not woken up. They could have been drugged and the police didn’t think to test them for it.
everytime Ryan says "and the case remains UNSOLVED" i feel restless as they dont have closures but the fact that there is a hope this case may be officially SOLVED is so heart soothing
I’m really glad that the sheriff who reopened the case has a personal connection to the case. It’s more likely that he’s solve it and I hope he eventually does.
@Luke Brown well then that means no one can tell.him to it then i c Mean how can u not hear two people getting murded in the same house as they were in.

Meh... I think it can be talk about anything by those who are resting on pillows, like kids at a sleepove....... Nope nvr mind, it's intimate talk (could be about anything rly) after sex. I agree n think it was cute how he used it not thinking...
It's not hard though it's kinda just psychology lol I mean I sit and think "if they did this or this they wouldn't have gotten caught" but I also think "the police had this and this and still couldn't find who did it and this and this"
TheArchitect813 Lol. Shane’s just putting himself in someone’s shoes. It’s easy to think about why many killers would call. It’s mostly to taunt the victims. Many times, they want that feeling of “living in the edge”, and if they succeed in calling and not getting caught, it’s their greatest feelings. But then again, this is just my theory.
Little kids can often sleep through loud noises. My sister slept through fire alarms and shouting when she was little. I can imagine the kids sleeping through the murder if the victims were gagged or killed in their sleep.
So true. With my youngest child, you can yell at her, shake her arm or shoulder vigourously, turn her over, play loud music next to her and she will still sleep. Hmm, come to think of it all my kids, and even I, sleep deep like this. I'm oversleeping past my alarm every other day because of this problem. Guess I passed it on to my kids... Shit. 😮
Marty has seemingly passed away from cancer in 2000, but I really hope the case will find closure, seems like the new Sheriff actually wants to do his job.
@@BRIDGETTWC they have 2 confessions that Marty did it and boxes of evidence leading back to Marty do they want a power point presentation that he did it
Okaaaay, they have that letter, the confession, the therapist, the fact that the lady killed was talking to his wife, his son was somehow left alone in the same cabin, AND the fact he left the county right after the murders?! Um...yeah... he totally had nothing to do with it. Let him walk freely lmao
I agree that it makes sense, but here's something to consider... this guy went to a therapist. That would mean he was struggling with something mentally and emotionally, so he may not have been completely sane. That alone would skew the investigation and the judicial process. Also, unless they can match DNA and/or fingerprints, the evidence, no matter how obvious it may seem, is not conclusive.
Jillian Myerly As far as im concerned right now we are not trying to sentence anybody. Were looking for the person that commited the murder, so whether or not they were insane doesnt matter. Besides, if you kill 4 people you can’t really plead not guilty by reasons of insanity. You would be executed or given multiple life sentences. Its common knowledge that mass murderers typically aren’t sane
Omg, the fact that it makes sense gives me chills, I feel so bad for everyone who lives there. If the guys still alive, he could still be killing. Because he doesn’t appear sane.
With the letter from Marty Smartt, I think it could've been him telling his wife (even tho she never got the letter) that he killed for her. So it wasn't his wife who wanted it, but the way he saw it was that they needed to be killed. And it helped his marriage in his mind. But in her mind their marriage wasn't fixed so he was asking what else he has to do for her (like to win her back).
“Oh well if you see someone covered in blood on the forest your not gonna say excuse me sir why are you covered in blood” Shane always has me laughing!! 😂😂😂
I drove through that resort last summer (2019) after learning about these murders. Although the cabin that the murders occurred in had been bulldozed, the neighborhood itself still had an eerie feel to it. I wanted to try sample gold panning the creek that surrounds the cabin site, but felt really uneasy and only wanted to leave.
Shane and Ryan should do a segment called "Buzzfeed finally Solved" and talk about murders/mysteries that were unsolved for decades but eventually solved. I need some hope
I love when they go to the locations as well, adds a really great visual element. This terrifies me because I can see that it's a real place, not just pictures.
demon_child Basically, most small towns are made up of the same families. So when this murder happened it was likely that the town knew who did it, but because everyone knows everyone (and possibly because of other previous small town dramas/rumours) they’re not gonna say who did it. Mostly because of social status or that it would put their own family in the firing line. Hope that makes sense, also if I’ve missed something feel free to add on.
@@King5outh That's exactly what i was thinking, they all know who did it but, being a small town, most likely everyone knows everyone or even related to each other. They woundn't talk.
@@King5outh reminds me of that other case, Ron McElroy, where everyone hated him, and after a town meeting about how much everyone hated him, someone shot him, in broad daylight, everyone saw them, but said nothing because they were freed of a jerk
I believe that Maylin thought Marty had an affair with Sue and other people. That is what the problems with their relationship was about. Marylin threatened to leave him if he didn't do something to fix it. Marty then went crazy and murdered the Sharps because he thought it would show how much he cared about her. He confessed that he killed them and then she left him. That is where the letter came from. But Marylin was scared of what he would do to her so she kept her mouth shut. But idk I could be wrong

Well it seems to me that almost every crime that remains unsolved is a result of bad/faulty investigation on the part of the police where in they either lose evidence, ignore evidence, not inspect the crime scene properly, not interrogate the suspects and witnesses properly and such. Just pointing out an observation. It's not that the perpetrators of the crime are super geniuses to cover their tracks; it's just that the people trying to nab them didn't do their job right.
They didn't really bring up Marilyn's inconsistent behaviour or why she acted in the way she did. Honestly, I think it was the safest way for her to try and get the truth out while being terrified of her murdering ex-husband, i.e. saying she doesn't 'recall' certain events or letters, but confirms his handwriting. I get the feeling she tried to have the evidence speak for itself without putting the bullseye on her own back. Too bad the police just hosed down the facts. I don't think she's involved in the coverup.

You guys should do a series called 'Buzzfeed Solved' Where you talk about real gruesome crimes that are solved, but

culprit.

Oh yes. Yes.
YES!! I'd be totally addicted to a "Buzzfeed solved"!

I think the killer scared them so bad that they refuse to confess anything they may have witnessed
@@mcfreezyyaboi8389 I'm just saying that this is my experience
Well they were kids, they probably got scared and pretended they were asleep and didn't hear anything, and were too scared to say anything

Um...yeah... he totally had nothing to do with it. Let him walk freely lmao
xoPanchitaxo
It makes so much since that he’s guilty, though. I agree!
Jillian Myerly
As far as im concerned right now we are not trying to sentence anybody. Were looking for the person that commited the murder, so whether or not they were insane doesnt matter. Besides, if you kill 4 people you can’t really plead not guilty by reasons of insanity. You would be executed or given multiple life sentences. Its common knowledge that mass murderers typically aren’t sane
Jillian Myerly The case wouldn’t be as strong without DNA, but they could find him guilty on circumstantial evidence

Basically, most small towns are made up of the same families.

I believe that Maylin thought Marty had an affair with Sue and other people. That is what the problems with their relationship was about. Marylin threatened to leave him if he didn't do something to fix it. Marty then went crazy and murdered the Sharps because he thought it would show how much he cared about her.
