  • Day 62! The Concertina Reel
Today I'm joined on piano by Austin Jones at Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas.
We had a lovely chat to some music students this morning and I was delighted to find that Austin backed some irish tunes and was willing to play one with me!
Thanks to Chris Smith for inviting us in to play and chat for his class.
I know a couple of people asked for this tune but I can't find the requests, so if you did ask for it, this one's for you!

Chomh suimiúil... hes pressing on the down-stroke, hence the uneven waltzing sound, a side effect of copying baroque bowing most likely. Though he's improvising the tune as an experienced player. (Or maybe whatever the irish glisando does lifts the tone.)
There's something else in Irish's rhythm that I can't quite quantify from hearing alone. One thing i've noticed that when each bar is interpreted, it is split into two (different) phrases, so its accented at each.

If you're gonna play in texas, you gotta have a concertina in the band
That lead fiddle's hot, but not for a Clare man
