  • #apistogramma #apistos #cockatoodwarfcichlid This weeks video is a care guide for the Cockatoo Dwarf Cichlid. A fish I have kept for the last few years and have great success with them. Also I know you don’t actually get double yellow Apistos it was a joke but after editing I realised that a lot of countries don’t have double yellow lines so yeah..... 😂

    Very nice video👍Cacs are my all-time favorite fish. Had a breeding pair a few years ago. Fascinating to watch Mama taking such great care of the babies. But unfortunately Dad not so much...he ate them & beat her up a little while I was at work one day😢 My 1st spawn & I learned to never leave the male in with the babies again! They were so cute~ just starting to get spots...

    great video loved it. so ive had an up and down rollercoaster with these fish mainly down really down lol. so i bought a male and female about a year ago i have a 200 litre tank, the male had amazing orange and black colours on the fins and the female was yellow with a black strip. so the male died i then went n bought another male, he had the same beautifull colours but for about 2 weeks straight the female down nothing but chase him from food hiding places he couldn't get peace, i put him in my other 60 litre tank but he died a few days later. so 3 days ago i went n bought my third male. he eats swims around great fish. on the first day the female was like a differant fish she went really yellow and started to swim to male and back down this all day she was like a differant fish. but today she has started her usuall chasing the male. this male dosent seem to back down as much as the others. but im worried im going to lose another male. so im sorry for the mega long messege any help would be fantastic.

    • @Fishkeepingmadeeasy
      @Fishkeepingmadeeasy  3 роки тому +3

      Hey thanks for the comment! Yeah, females can be pretty aggressive. A few things I would try is one, rescaping the tank so that any territory the female had is now gone. Two, add a divider somewhere in the tank until they seem like they’re getting on. 3, create a lot more hiding places for both fish and a lot more plants and hardscape just so they don’t see or bump into each other so easily. Hopefully someone else could suggest some ideas too but I’ve also experienced females being really aggressive but not to the point of killing the male.

      @@Fishkeepingmadeeasy thankyou for the reply :). the male is doing great so far loves daphnia as i found out today. would a divider work when i have other fish in the tank ? i have neon and cardinal tetras, blue phantom plec, Harlequin rasboras, cherry barbs and False julii corys. so would you suggest more real plants ? or would some fake ones do at the moment? reason i ask is i have tones of spare fake plants at hand but i would need to buy more real ones n funds are tight this month ?

    • @Fishkeepingmadeeasy
      @Fishkeepingmadeeasy  3 роки тому +1

      You could just divide a small section of the tank just the Apisto. But yeah fake plants work exactly the same, you’re just trying to stop the line of sight between the fish so anything will work 👍

    • @Fishkeepingmadeeasy
      @Fishkeepingmadeeasy  3 роки тому +3

      They will likely try and spawn somewhere else, under a log, under a leaf anywhere they can find really. having a male and female of any Cichlid will most of the time result in some kind of breeding or breeding behaviour. I wouldn’t worry about it though as the tetra will likely eat the majority of the fry so you’ll be left with a very small amount of adults if any.

I have a new pair and they are very different. Do you definitely have a male and female? It’s worth double checking as this is the kind of behaviour you can get it you have two males. Is it a big tank? These dwarf cichlids are small but sometimes need a lot of space. You could add more hiding spots in your tank but realistically I don’t think they’re compatible I’m afraid. You could take your female back to the fish shop and see if they will trade you another

      @@Fishkeepingmadeeasy Hi, thanks for the reply. Yes, they are definitely male and female. I ended up moving and keeping the female in my other 50 gallon tank until she healed up and looked better and was more peaceful again. I used some Stress Coat and she is also not turning black anymore. I got some live plants and camouflaged a new cave for her in the original 50 gallon tank where the male is, and then immediately reintroduced her to the tank day before yesterday. The male was so happy to have her back!!! They are getting along great together. I guess all the male needed was some court ordered separation and anger management! Lol Problem seems to be solved and I am crossing my fingers that this lasts. So, if anyone has this issue, I suggest separating them for a bit if you have another tank and then reintroducing them to each other again after a couple of weeks. Worked like a charm for me 😊
