I'm either more aware of apistos so i see them more often at the LFS or they are becoming more available in my neck of the woods. Either way, I'm here for it! Love them so much!

about a year ago I went to Dallas, about 3 hours from where I live. I visited a fish shop there and bought a pair of apistogramma hongsloi , I brought them home and put them in a very densely planted 20 gallon. they were young and only about an inch long so they disappeared into the jungle growing in the tank. after a week or so I would see them occasionally both were pretty . but then after having them about a month I noticed I was only seeing the male.
I watched and waited about 10 more days but never saw the female. so I caught the male and put him in a 40 breeder I had set up for them and completely unplanted and removed all the rocks and wood from the 20 to find the female.
but she was gone. completely no sign of her at all.
my tanks all have scuds snails and other critters so if a fish dies it gets eaten by the tank pretty quick....
anyway now I have this beautiful male but no female. there are no stores near me that sale apistos at all and I can't find anyone that will sale just females online.
I suppose ill have to just try to buy a trio some where and see if that works out......

Would you mind sharing your water change schedule for the first tank? Just wondering because I know plecos can carry a pretty hefty bioload and you’re just running the one sponge filter. Appreciate it!

In the first tank with the ortegi (sp?) and the duplicarius, what are those plecos? Never seen them before and they are incredible.

I have trifasciata with adolfo cory!! They keep spawning in my 22L 😍🫣There’s 15 little apistos with the mom - although she’s starting to get irritable at the bigger ones. I noticed ur tanks have more open spaces at the bottom - is that better than having rock hardscape? I wonder if mine is too packed… I got feedback from apisto keepers that they need a lot of line of sight blockers? But my tank looks smaller than your’s. Great video and thanks for sharing your setups and faves!!
I dont let my fry grow out in the tank. Since i remove them i wouldnt need as many line of sight breaks =)
@@SteenfottAquatics Ah! It also sounds like your pairs are not too aggressive either. My male can get a little agro 😅🫥 Are these your breeding tank then, and then you move the fry out when they’re big enough to keep spawning?

I just checked a book about all kind of small south-american chichlids on A. personata - yeap, even there not much useful information. Most likely black water, prefers the bottom and leaflitter level of small flowing waterways. Nothing on breeding or general care in the aquarium..
