Hey Jorden, good stuff for us at 3.5 and up. Thanks,
Thanks for watching!
It may be better to force a weaker 3rd shot vs giving your opponent a practice feed to do as they please with.
The problem I have playing at the club level with 3rd drop shots is that my partner would be hanging back at the baseline or transition zone. Like I worked so hard to get a lofty drop to buy us time to get to the NVZ line and I look over my shoulders my partner is lost back there. Frustrating!
So I end up banging and driving the crap out of the ball and just play solo half of the time lol.
All it comes down to is depth, angle, or aim at your opponent's shoulders, hips and feet. How you achieve that is based on how you play and your opponent plays. There's not a one size fits all approach.
Nothing in pickleball is one size fits all. Although there are certain guidelines to follow that can really help 99% of players.

Love point #4 with regards to it not being a great idea to always take the ball out of the air - I always noticed that I pop the ball up or the shot is ineffective at doing what it should & didn't think that the low contact point was the missing concept for me!
With regards to point #5, I find that a semi-open stance works well for me when serving diagonally to the left (as a right-handed player). When serving diagonally to the right side, I find closed stance helping out a ton to get the direction of the serve correct
Awesome!!
Pickleball coach? Does that pay better than a kickball coach?
Definitely, because there are millions of pickleball players around the world.
Personally I don't think a return with a big arc is good bc some players that have a tennis background like myself would have a really easy 3rd shot drive which are winners 8 out of 10 times. I think the best returns are just simple deep returns with good pace. Also the skill that's most needed transitioning to the kitchen line is split stepping. Returning the serve is just one part of the equation
Yes, it boils down to mobility. If you can’t get close to the NVZ line, your toast
I understand what Slappy is saying about getting a tennis background rocket on the 3rd if your return is high and bouncy. However, if the returner creates the time to get in a better position near the kitchen, those rocket winners should be very rare. No matter how good the drive, the ball still has to travel at a predictable height to clear the net but not go out. A 4.0 + player in position shouldn't have a problem with that ball 9 out 10 times. If Ex Tennis Player Rocket Man is hitting from the transition zone, all bets are off.😅
A serve landing within 3 feet of the back line with both big arc & some speed forces the returner three to five feet behind the line. Although the return is a drive, it gives the serving team a bit more time due to the longer distance. If the serving team can return the drive, they can hit it deep to the returner who has had no time to advance much past the serve line. Often the returners gets jammed and are unable to return the serve because they’re too close to the line. This serve is situational & something to mix in.
If you’re hitting a winner 80% of the time off the drive, you are just playing against weaker competition. Trust, when your opponents are equal level, a big drive isn’t a winner, it’s a setup shot.
@@douglasmurdoch7247 spot on. I returned all but two of the returns that were drives yesterday. Most of my drive returns were back near the baseline at their feet, either a winner or keeping them back on defense. I did swing at and miss two - it didn’t matter, they went out of bounds. That is a 100% success rate.
