Looks like today is all about educational videos! As Age of Empires gains more and more players, here is a small guide where we will be covering a couple of technical elements of the game! We'll go over control groups, hotkeys and many more ways for you to raise your in-game productivity and ensure total dominance!
wouldnt it be awesome if one of the developers would watch and comment on this video?! grubby shows so many workarounds to some of the less well executed control features, should be interesting to hear how this was originally intended by the devs.
Great video! As someone coming from Blizzard RTS games as well, some of these differences have been very frustrating. Nice to hear your thought on them Grubby.
Lowko! Dude I've spent hours watching you cast and play SC2 and recently started playing AoE4. Haven't been playing SC for awhile so you fell outta my recommended vids. Glad you commented here bro and I'll be back checking back into your channel. Would love to watch you play this.
Im 32 years old, played Warcraft3 20 years ago and remember admiring the name Grubby, it's so funny to end up on your videos on a new Age of Empire game, feels like a time machine my dude! And really awesome content and tips, really needed a video like this and yours is definetly the only worthy one I found. Keep it up man! Subscribed instantly
Hey Grubby, I normally don't delve into the youtube comments section, but just wanna say that your AOE4 content is S tier! I very much appreciate the tips and your analytical explanations. It's nice to know the WHY behind things, and you articulate it amazingly. Very keen to see more indepth AoE analysis from you in the future. Keep it up!
F1, F2, F3, and F4 are REALLY useful for me. They select ALL the buildings in a certain category and then you just hit TAB to cycle through each one. So: F1 selects Barracks and Archery. Queue up Spearmen, hit Tab, queue up Archers. It ensures you don't forget to hotkey certain buildings too.
After watching your vids and streams regularly for many years it feels so good that you entered a new and great RTS and the AoE community really loves you for it. Only heard positive things :) win-win
Useful video thanks a lot, so far I am going with this grouping with adjustments depending on the game: group 1 : infantry or mixed front attack force 1 group 2 : cavalry or mixed flank force 1 group 3 : archers or mixed front attack force 2 group 4 : ranged siege / special units / vulnerable units / support or mixed flank force 2 group 5 : scout or villager builder or special units group 6 : barracks group 7 : archery ranges group 8 : stables group 9 : special buildings group 0 : market I use ctrl+A for all army so I can press Ctrl+A and then A again for attack, but after seeing this video maybe I'll change it to idle army because sometimes I have already given some orders to specific groups and then they change course.
I thought I would know most of these but I was mistaken, thank you so much. Two tips I would add : deactivate team colors (when playing other than 1v1) and unbind "alt" for "rotate" (AFAIK it can only be done by editing the keymap file with a texteditor)
Also I think you could do a whole new video on army micro tips, It looks like there is a movement speed boost when charging but I never tested it properly, also in AOE2 a group of unit would walk at the speed of their slowest member and grouping monk/siege in an army would make it super slow, I think this is still in the game. I wish there was a "follow" command to circumvent this
For SC2 to go through the pages you can press tab. It won't do it by page but it will cycle through the unit types, so if that ultra is on page three it'll jump to pg3 when you tab to the ultras :)
YES i and many other are patiently waiting for a new AoM :) fingers crossed it will come since AoE4 is quite a great release (with a few bugs and issues like performance for example)
Hey Grubby! I simply loved this video in terms of how much useful information I could find that helped me become a bit faster in my macro. I was wondering if you could take this to the next level and actually have an in-game demonstration of how you do things in a match against the A.I., like pause the video at some macro spots and say what keys you're using at each moment, so we can hope to learn a bit of these concepts being applied in a real game. Cheers!
33:35 you should have specifically mentioned how good that is for farms, since that's the best way to spam them, is actually optimal placement and like 99% of the use this feature has or sees.
If you tab through selected army, and its not on all and you have more than one unit type, it'll only control the highlighted unit in the group even though you have all that grouped unit still selected. Nice little feature.
You can shift build the buildings.. select villagers, S for stop, Build build build... So far I have yet to find any single hotkey guide that is complete so everyone be sure to look around, you will learn stuff in all the different guides. Maybe even F would be better for pull harvesters to buildings as I'm not sure if the inventory is saved in that case.
Awesome overview, I've been spoiled by how smooth Blizzard's RTS games are and how intuitive and customizable their hotkeys are and the differences and quirks in AoE4 have been infuriating. Not happy at the prospect of messing with my SC2 muscle memory for an obviously less thought out hotkey setup from AoE4. You've kept a great attitude despite the annoyances though.
In AoE2, and seems like also in AoE4, when a villager is assigned a task, it gains a title (farmer, lumberjack, miner, builder, etc.). A lumberjack is usually only given one task: to chop down one tree when the player right clicks a tree. But when that job is done, the lumberjack will automatically look for the next job. The same with builders. That's why when a builder finished one building, it will attempt to aquire the next unfinished building as a target.
Thank you for this video, extremely helpful. Especially if you are transitioning from Blizzard RTS to AoE4. I also want to say you are a beautiful and humble person.
If you select multiple unit types and group them, you can shift click one unit type to deselect. They should add alt-click to remove 1 unit of the selection. That way, you can select 10 vills, send them to gold, alt click 3 times, send the remaining 7 to wood, alt click 4 times, and send the last 3 to farm. Maybe allow user-choice how prioritization for which unit to deselect works. For example, prefer deselection of unit with lower/higher max%health. I didn't know about shift clicking, awesome tip. If I have lots of barracks and other military buildings all over the map, it's nice to be able to select all military buildings, shift click everything except the type that I want away, and tie that to hotkey. If you use the select all mil buildings hotkey, you don't ever need a control group for all your barracks since that's what's shown first in the selection right?
If I don't mistake, you can actually navigate in the pages of the selectionned units in Starcraft UI by pressing tab multiple times, just like for bildings; it navigates between the different types of units. Also, the workers are always at the end of last page.
on the barracks building: instead of pressing Q + S then Q + shift + S to build multiple barracks just right click anywhere in the direction you want them to build then Q + shift + S to chain build to save a bit of time
I am still trying to find my own style of hotkeys in AoE IV but... For me : Hotkeys: 1.infantry/melee 2. Archer/ranged 3. Horse 4. Siege/Monk or Navy etc... (Four units does get tricky for me but feel it sometimes necessary). I am some what flexible with my controlgrp hotkeys. Sometimes my buildings hotkeys start at 4 sometimes at 5
Villagers don't drop resources off automatically though, if you click on a new, different resource the carried goods are lost. What you observed is that the town center, mill, lumber camp and mining camp all count as ressource-drop-off-buildings and do not limit the resource
Great Video for learning! I was sitting before my laptop and take notes, no joke! XD I also knew the most things, but also learned a hand full new tricks, thank you for that interesting knowledge drop! As a beginner I still have a long way of learning and your videos give me the nessecary understanding of the details. Keep on going that great work! :D

@@ahamad9705 because Grubby used to play orcs in WC3 back in... man, so many years ago, back when I player WC3 ladder with my friebds during my fist college degree!
The way the camera centres on groups in this game has always bothered me, focusing on the largest group isnt perfect, but focusing on nothing is completely useless. I really hope they change it. Edit: Also the anti waste mechanic ONLY works when they Vills build a new drop off point, not if you send a villager to do a new task directly like gather wood if they are holding food.
What happened at 30:10 was those vills who went to build barracks finished chopping their individual trees they were chopping, as opposed to the whole patch.
You are amazing, Grubby! I watched your other video and learned a lot about efficiency, like getting sheep closer to the hit box & I apply it in ever match - my booming is soo much better now! I want to be really good at AOE. XD
Might be a new hotkey that showed up after this vid dropped, but the 'B' key will remove production from buildings back-to-front (the most recently queued)
About making multiple buildings. Actually the easier way is still to hold the shift to put down all the buildings, then right click one of them to let the workers start building that one. THe worker will finish this one, then go to build others.
I'm pretty sure in sc2 the pages of units in a big group could be navigated with tab if they're different types of units. If another type of unit is on the next page, tabbing would swap to that page.
The anti waste mechanic is interesting I wonder if you could exploit it to quickly gather wood by sending your ore miners to do one round of would chopping and then return to mining ore.
My groups are 1 infantry 2 Cav 3 Siege 4 TCs 5 Unit production 6 Market 9 (mouse button) Scouts 0 (mb) Monks/ Special F1-5 as default I bind the mil pro to 5 after using F1 Unselected - Defense, Harass, etc All army is ` and Idle mil is Control ` (tilde/grave)
See, the thing is - I love clicking the pictures and if they keep the grid system it allows me to be competitive and just use my mouse with 12 side buttons
you sound like 80s james bond XD good video ty for the tips im new and it helped me alooot specialy that cntrol group thing , back in wc3 there was nothing of that
Not sure if this has been mentioned but I caught a mistake in your video, at 7:20 or so you are giving the keybind shift + f1 and ctrl + f1 instead of shift + 1 and ctrl + 1 (probably because you had just been talking about the f1 village key)
This is for Grubby and other subs -- we know the mouse buttons currently can't be hotkeyed within AOE4. Is there any mouse software that allows you to universally assign mouse buttons to a keyboard key (or macro of keyboard keys)? Or does AOE4 block any such feature to prevent what could be considered "cheating?"
I use a razor mouse and it comes with its own software that allows you to do this and many other things. I can rebind a mouse key to be the 1 key for example. OR make it be a macro that presses several keys in sequence. AoE does not block that. (cannot it is all in your computer)

Is there a way to disable clicking any menu? It would force me to use keyboard. Im usualy fine for the first 15 min of a game but once it get heated I go back to clicking.
Either I am crazy or ctrl+shift+c (select all military units) just doesn't work sometimes and it's bugged. I'm super dependent on this hotkey and starting a game where I know it's bugged and won't work is rage inducing, pls fix
Hi! I'm a total noob. Is there a quick way to assign all units of a type to a specific key? I mean other than double clicking on a unit then ctrl+number
I have really looked, but I can't find or see a "select all villagers ON SCREEN". I don't want to "select all villagers" when only a group on my screen are being attacked, because hitting G makes all of your villagers in the game Garrison (which messes up your economy).
