Turin, you are single-handedly getting me into this game. Never played AoE before, suck at RTS games, but the triumph of a well-played game is too compelling.
@@Monkeyman-qt1sm It's not a good idea because you need your left hand for the hot keys. See if you can get used to the standard hot keys and pan with either map edge or middle mouse. However, for some reason middle mouse scroll is a bit wonky compared to other games. I'm not sure if that will be fixed or not.
Same here, played AoE before but never really serious, just did a few skirmishes without even knowing what I was doing. This video really helps a lot. I'm really eager to buy this game now.
You can also use the F1-F4 keys to look at your military, economic, upgrade buildings and town hall. Although they are a bit further from the numbers, its an option for those who wish to use it. Nice video. Hope to learn more from your channel as a AoE babi
This video has helped extremely and is perfectly put together, as new RTS player with AoE IV being one of my first, this really has made me enjoy the game more, especially with the hotkeys & group, so many tips the game doesnt show. Thanks a lot
Honestly, knowing that you can go into solo practice is what made me now decide to pick up the game. I have been playing singleplayer roguelike RTS like TAB and Age Of Darkness, but I felt REALLY intimidated learning even the most basic build orders under pressure from someone, so knowing you can go into a game solo and just practice economy is awesome
Great guide. Only tip I have is if you play the RUS you shouldn't delete lumbercamps because they extend influence of fortresses that increase wood production
New to the game and RTS control schemes in general. Your advice for hotkeys and control groups is a LIFESAVER, controlling and managing my units is the #1 hardest thing for me at the moment and the advice helps a ton. Thanks sm!
Turin you're a real one for this. Playing age of mythology as a child on the easiest difficulty (and SuperCanadaBears) did not prepare me for this game. Super excited for this and hoping for more content on it since I'm too busy with school right now to play!
Couple of extra tips: F1 and F2 select all military and all eco buildings so you don't have to group them with hotkeys Line formation is good for Infantry and Cavalry because they can engage in melee faster, without units behind bumping into each other and wasting time as they wrap around
Selecting all eco / millitary is generally not a very good practice, since stuff is happening all over the map and you don't want to accidentally pull units away from where they should keep doing what they're doing.
One thing to note, that I wasn't aware of: If The more workers are building the same building, the less efficient they build. Aussie Drongo mentioned that. 2 villagers the same building NOT 2x faster than 1 villager. Diminishing returns the more villagers you add..
@@turinRTS Cuz it sounded like you said, if you have more villagers working on a building, they will build exponentially faster or something.. It's more like the opposite of exponential..logarithmic?

Yeah I was about to mention this in the comments, but then I saw you did already. In addition to what you said, simply tapping h multiple times will cycle through your various town centers if you have more than one. I believe it picks the oldest one first, then goes to the next oldest and so on. Very handy imho, frees up the control group key for better unit control.
I just tried it and it seems the benefit of using your own shortcut, '4' in this case, is that unlike 'h' it does not re-center on the town center, but still gives you access to the options.
Can’t wait for you to start hosting tournaments for this game for all the Total War vets! I’m sure after the delay everyone’s looking at aoe4 as a great way to fill in the gap until WH3 and Immortal Empires comes out. All the best, Turin!
Hi iam new ish to age of empires and I always fine myself microing to hard and iam totally forgetting to make troops and certin building at certain time. Let's just say iam not a good strategist yet but your video are very helpful and now iam subbed because of it. Great job on this video.
Thankyou for this - I've been watching a few gameplay videos and could see people doing certain things, but they never explained exactly how they were doing something or why.. makes lots of sense now.
You can shift + rmb on the mini map in a zigzag pattern to scout the whole map in a single waypoint command. Then halfway you can order the cattle of sheep he herded to walk to you town center. Also shift comes in handy to build 5 units of any kind in 1 click. This can give you small time management advantages.
when you use a control group for your army, you can tab through unit types. then commands will only apply to *that* unit type. so instead of using control group 2 for archers in your example, you can just keep everything in group 1, tab to archers, and order them around (move/attack). then tab back to all if you need to. its a few more clicks than if you use control groups because of all the tabbing, but also requires less complicated control group making for when things get complicated.

Hey Turin some simple questions: 1) About the townhall bell. You mentioned in a previous video that the ringing of increased annoyance can be stopped by building a house right next to the hall, are there other options to shut it up? You said that it's better in some cases to have fields around your hall. 2) About the meat of game. In other rts-games I've seen that meat killed by warroir-units spoils instantly or faster in comparison to that killed by workers, does this apply here? In your Rus vs. Mongol video your scouts killed game for rewards and the meat stayed unspoiled. Is this a perk native to the Rus or does that work for all civs?
What key strokes do you have to press to chain orders for units? I.e. Give the scout waypoints or sheep to collect, then herd them back to the town center. Or, order the prelate to go pick up a relic, then drop it off at the church What keys do I press hahaha? That's what I'm the worst at with rts games, is doing everything the slow way and not learning the quick keys and combo orders
Perhaps a really stupid question (apologies a newbie). I get selecting units and control plus a number binds them, but how do you sub-unit like he did under hot key section when it was 1,2? i.e collectively 1 army made up of 2 different types of units?
haven't played AoE4, but usually in strategy games you just select all your units, add them to the overall control group, select all your ranged units, add them to the ranged control group.
It isn't a subgroup, it is a second, overlapping group. One unit can be part of multiple control groups, so it is possible to group your whole army as control group 1, but then also group all your archers as control group 2. That way you can use group 1 to order the whole force to move around the map together, then use group 2 to focus fire with your archers (without making your infantry stop attacking the guy in front of them as they try to path to whatever unit you wanted your archers to shoot at).
@@boosterh1113 Thanks so much. This is exactly what I was trying to figure out. Not sure if you were able to do in AOE 3 or if you played the AO4 tech test, but how do you create these.
