It’s another day building a mountian cabin with The Perkins Crew!! On this episode we finally Get a few of the windows for our project! This frees us up to start moving around the house and doing siding in the areas we have windows. Jaime also breaks out some very cool old-school woodworking tricks and we talk about window installation!

I hit the “like” button before even starting the video cause I KNEW I would like it … I did! thanks!
I am fully impressed! It’s just a complete ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxGqOCINHE0Z0E5gxzSdNi9NWGugRY5Hm2 plan with the best resources and step by step instructions . These shed plans are so satisfying as if the sheds build themselves on their own. Worthy work Ryan!
Sunday funday with the Perkins guys. Thanks guys! Need a WWAD (What Would Arlo Do?) shirt.
It's nice to see everyone working well together. I think that is half the battle, if you like your crew and everyone gets along, you get more work done. Love watching you guys!
Jamie, great protip regarding the expansion of the windows. Here Louisiana, it gets cold then very hot with high humidity and rains every day. Water is not our friend here when it comes to houses. Thanks.
When the water gets in that’s the end - Jax fl
Lots of good information. I like this type of video as opposed to a time lapse
hahahaha, the tub blocking. Jamie "it's not exactly conventional" that was awesome.
"Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me" ❤
Hey Erik and Jamie, big fan of you guys.
I would love to see more content regarding the business side of the business - how you find clients/establish relationships, plan out work in advance, work with architects, bill homeowners, find subs, organize material, etc.
Some carpenters/builders are great at their trade but bad at business and thats what keeps them from being able to scale.
Just curious. Thanks!
I envy you guys. Working with friends and doing what you love is amazing! Keep up the good work.
I enjoy watching you guys because your having fun but getting work done. I had new house close to me take two and a half yrar to complete. Some beautiful days no work was being done. Builder didn't have enough workers to take contracts.
As always, you guys are the best. I have been tubing with my wife and 6 kids and 11 grandkids near Bryson City at least a half a dozen times. I would pay money to see Jason in a tube! Thanks again.
You have a nice crew, seems like everyone gets along pretty good. I hope the older gentleman is doing well? I haven't seen him lately.
It makes a HUGE difference to be in a crew that gets along with each other.
Arlo's well. He's working on building his new home.
They have an episode working at Arlos house.
You guys are the best at packing real valuable content (and a bit of fun) into every video. I’m a Habitat for Humanity construction volunteer, which means I’m involved to some degree in every stage and discipline of the build process. I can’t tell you how much your “come build with us” format keeps me in touch with all aspects of the process and the latest products and best practices. Keep it coming, guys!
I feel as though I have been to class! I love it. The winding sticks are cool!
Thank you I'm a apprentice learning a lot from you blokes the hardest part is retaining the information
Great watching you guys work....
Years ago, I had to paint a large window with 48 panes. Instead of taping the glass, I thought it would be easier to spray the whole thing and just scrape off the overspray with a razor blade. I've done a lot of dumb things in life, but that's got to be in the top ten.
There’s a certain latex paint you can actually do that with. I watched some painters do it.
Jaime, great call on the shower edge blocking given risk of expansion using a single wide 2x12 with a little rip taken out of it. True sign of a master carpenter knowing that the wood expands across the face grain and not along the grain potentially creating an issue in your humid climate. A+ work men!
Regarding the window trim - use the planer to cut a rabbit to accommodate the window flange and allow it to remain flat against the wall. Also its smart to cut small weep channels on bottom trim board of to allow drainage if water gets behind the trim.
I knew that there had to be more footage of Jamie explaining the winding sticks. There was no way that he could explain them in such a short time.
😂
What a perfect sponsor for you guys!
Right information for Shed Lover!!!
Well done Great Video!! On a side note to do with the trim if you are going to have it sit flat with no problems, probably best to rip the back of the trim, when you make them in the shop, the thickness of the vinyl window trim.
thanks for the tips guy u show about the flashing around the windows that really help me understanding the method keep on rolling be safe
I finally realized the big difference between the brothers. One LOVES to talk and one NEEDS to talk.
Master the concepts of engineering here 💯💯✌
Jaime is so smart🙂
Nice job! Nice relaxing Sunday to watch your video.... always enjoy.
Need to see more about that post Jamie was doing. Job looking good.
Another great video guys! I've installed tons of cedar siding and from experience I would suggest wrapping your pointing finger with cloth sport tape. (the one that you use to hold the saw to the siding edge while ripping) This will help eliminate a lot (not all) splinters. I wish UA-cam and especially you guys had been around back in the day. For all the novice carpenters out there I highly recommend that you subscribe and watch ALL the videos these guys make. You can't buy the knowledge that you're getting on here for free! P.S. DEWALT, send these guys a cordless siding gun!!!
We could take up a collection but then DeWalt wouldn’t get the credit. Roll the credits boys!
Right on . The Rip Fence Finger. . It was hard to believe for me that even as a few years ago . I amazed the other carpenters ."How are you going to rip that ?" and clapped my thumb and index together .." Here's my tablesaw " ...No Way !! .. and yeah , that finger can get abrasions , red , worn and embedded with wittle splinters . On a side note . If I am sheathing a lot and want factory edge like cuts . I fell in love with Vise Grip C clamps . Instead of snapping lines just set back or set forward a straight edge , Taking into account the kerf and rip away . No chalk dust , no eyeballing a line , just lift the saw at a slight angle so it bridges the entire straight edge . Then the drop is accurate and usable elsewhere . Click Click cut and go .
I really like the painted siding, and the pro tips on the window install was spot on.
Thanks Chuck
I just finished working at a carpenter for 3 weeks and due to that I can appreciate the hard work you guys are doing even more.
Keep it up :)
Love you guys great work boys love from Scotland x
Vibes are good
A few years ago I painted a commercial building with a HVLP sprayer and tractor implement paint. There was no wind so the paint swirled around the building and covered my black truck with white oil based paint. Needless to say, its never coming off.
Jaime we run the window trim through the table saw on edge a saw blade thick by however wide the flange is
Tips are always awesome
I used an airless sprayer to paint the clapboards on my house several years ago. I bought a spray shield to protect the windows because I didn’t want to mask everything. I still over-sprayed on a few window frames and on all the soffits.
I’ll spray it again next time because it was faster than using a brush, and the overspray isn’t visible from the street.
Love the pro tips on the window trim👍👍👍
I've been watching the Chanel for a couple of hours for the first time and I'm amazed. Really cool content. I'm Brazilian BTW and our construction "styles" are kinda different, even though constructions have much in common. That said, I admire how you (north americans) still build houses with that much wood. It looks damn expensive and gives a lot of work. Pretty neat tho! Good job, guys.
PS:. The green hat guy looks a lot like Ken Block. RIP legend.
Keep up the good work… channel is really taking off now
Always look forward to your vidoes. Good work!
A pull out full height bathroom cabinet next to the shower would have been good. Kinda like those skinny pull out pantries. Could have pre assembled it and pushed it in the gap.
Just a suggestion .. Try using a beam laser and a stand when setting windows or doors . Reference for the level inside and nail the bottom points , Then reference the plumb and tack the top corners , Then check the jamb for straight and lock in . I have basically thrown my Stabila level away when setting windows or doors . No need interpreting a bubble anymore !! .. The only thing I use them for now .Is straight edges and small projects that don't have to be supremely accurate .. On doors the beam laser is the most perfect way to accurately set a bi-folds , double doors , sliding doors and all doors , No dancing the door around in the openings anymore . Checks the floor and clearances with it , check the framing quickly for trimmer to trimmer plumb twist , Find oddball projections . Where I work , Nobody else is allowed to set expensive doors or gangs of windows but me . They know I get them Shazam the first time .. Try it .. It is so easy .and as fast as walking the dog
Great details at 11:56. Thanks!
Great video guys very entertaining
Fantastic window trim info Jamie!
It’s amazing to see how well your crew gels together! I wish I lived in your area so I could get you to build me a house. Regardless god bless and have a wonderful day.
The black windows look great!
Every time Eric says the word 'window' I can't stop smiling at how many extra o's and w's he adds at the end 🤭
More “thumbs up” people! This is quality content.
I do commercial construction & we used a “low bid” painter once & he painted no less than 20 cars that were customers of the store we were remodeling. Total nightmare.
Lots of great info again
always watching.....5:25am 🇵🇭🤟❤️❤️❤️
Find the lowest point on the house and reference that so that, so that on your siding you can make bench marks on all windows and corners so all your courses are spaced right, and you can check yourself going up the side of any door or window so that your courses stay even at inside and outside corners. You WILL lose concentration and forget to check and have to remove courses and catch up. We used to make our spacers and if you tilt them just a bit, you'll gain a 1/16 per course. Your gecko's are wider at the top so that's less likely to happen, but it will happen. Also on that twisted 6x, use you the side that you planed as a table and get a beam saw, (you guys need one in your tool box), and use that side to make your 90 degree cuts for your post, flip and cut the last side. You can make a quick template so that you can make your beam saw cuts coming from both ends, which gives your beam saw table support on both sides of the blade.
Nice work 👏 👌 👍!! Cabin coming Rite along despite supply shortages ...... :)
The Windows to come and Eric to say where and how! Jamie must to Laugh 😂and then make Your the Front. A Wonderful Sunday Video. A Hous to Building to late, i have already. But then I have a Fun with the Worker. Have much to teach from this Team
Greeting 🇦🇹
here in Northern Ireland black started becoming popular about 8 years ago, black windows fascia and spouting
Would like to see Jamie build the window trims in his shop. Interested in seeing him use dominos for joints instead of pocket screws.
Just a thought you could have prefabricated a set of shelves out of 1/2 birch plywood say 16" deap for the bathroom next to the shower.
I have! I've managed to spray white paint on my black motorcycle, 5 storeys below. This was a studio appartement on the last floor of an ancient building downtown that I spay painted. It took me 4 days to realize this was really my fault.. Unbelievable, even if it's just a few dots.
We ordered windows for our house in January. They are supposed to be in sometime in July. Crazy
Love your work 👍
Hey, when you screw up a cut you can say "We do it nice because we do it twice". LOL. Also I over sprayed a renters car while spray painting a house. . Didn't notice till I was done. Luckily it was a older car that was real dirty so it cleaned up without to much scrubbing.
thanks for sharing 👍
Try using GRK cabinet screws to install the windows. They are exterior and pressure treated rated. Safer and faster in my opinion then trying to nail the flange
"I hope everyone watches this"... of course we watched! Jamie was splainin!
00:07 Cardinal Coffee!
Love the video as usual i learned alot from this video especially the angle rip but thank you for the video love the content.
Good stuff, guys. More Arlo.
Great content as usual gents 😎😎
I have watched the full series for the Nantahala Retreat, Building a House Start to Finish, and Building the Farmhouse. I really love how you guys are very transparent and pay close attention to many details in building a house, and I have learned quite a lot.
I was wondering if it were possible to also include a pricing breakdown for each project for those who want to build a house for themselves.
Also, would it be possible to hire you guys in another state, say like...New York?
Not paint overspray. One of the sheetrock guys removed the plastic from the small bathroom window for ventilation or light. I saw it while on site and appreciated the extra ventilation. I didn't mention it to the sub. I didn't write a note directly on the window. After the coats of mud were finished drying the texture guy didn't realize the frosted window had no plastic. He sprayed texture all over the window. It took several hours of cleaning and scrubbing to remove the mud from the glass and window frame.
Jamie i never painted a window but my oldest son did when he was about 2 years old he told me he was helping he had paint from his fingers to his armpits pro mar 200 antique white
Good things happen when you #LetJaimeTalk.
Great video! Gonna try your favorite, lexal. I put a metal roof on my camp and on friggin screw hit a nail below. I tried to amgle it and get the rubber gssket to seal. Nope, small leak. Im gonna back it out and put the lexal to it then put the screw back in. Wish me luck, lol.
I love it when the fresh Perkins drops! I made the first 10 comments!
Since Jamie reads every comment….here goes-
Do y’all have woodpeckers in NC? I’m considering using LP Smart Side on my lake house and birds pecking away is absolutely a concern…they’ve chopped through traditional wood siding on may houses.
Any feedback from anyone with experience in this matter greatly appreciated.
we have woodpeckers in MN. i'm not sure if it's more, less or the same as NC. but so far, no issues with the LP i used to re-side my garage. coming up on 2 years now.
Good stuff!
Wben i eas a kid my mom cleaned new construction houses. Scraping the interior windows free of clear poly spray eas a real pain. The painters sprayed the trim with clear after the trim was done
Good info!Yay Arlo!
Dang these videos are good!
Did you just say, “click the link and get a free brochure”? Rofl you’re killing me 😂. Well done sir…well done.
Looks great. i like the pro tips
I'm curious why you wrapped the house if you used zip sheathing.
Because LP Smart Siding is using some of their videos in marketing and Zip is a competitor.
Like your sunglasses 🕶 color
Yes spray painted over a window, but the worst was I was helping sandblast paint off a friend's house and some how we sprayed a window pane luckily it was the bathroom so we did the other 7 and told his wife it was "privacy frosting".🙂
That's a pro tip 👌
Maravilhosos! Eu amei os vídeos, empolgada para os novos! 🎉
✌👍Laughing and learning
good video boy's good job
Nice to see some windows arriving and fitted…they’ll always be “winders” (rhymes with cinders) where I’m from…top elocution from Eric though. Lovely weather up in those mountains, same in the UK at the moment…hot March weather is becoming the norm here…scary stuff climate change wise. Is there a client for your build? If so have they been up to see how you’re getting on?
Great Jaime can talk, that wasn't so hard no was it, haha 😆
@19:17 re: wood movement. As soon as you said, it I did what Erik did. "Ohhh" small details that'll pay dividends. Why take the chance.
Why house wrap when using Zip? Taped Zipp is both water and air barrier, right?
Why grind off the liquid flash rather than adjust the trim and make it 1/8th wider? What did you do once you ground off the liquid flash? Apply a thin coat?
The house wrap was a consequence of having two different product sponsors. The siding manufacturer wanted to film some install footage but didn't want to advertise for ZIP😂
Good question about the liquid flash, seems like a lot of work vs making the trim wider.
The circular saw ripping through that siding sounds like the guitar solo in "Bad to the Bone" by George Thorogood.
Do you really need 2-1/2 inch nails for siding that’s 1/2 inch plus maybe 5/8 sheeting?
The windows came in!
nice sidin job guyz…tell jason to get thoze cutz right 🤫
