  • Yes, another VTX1300. A 2005 in not so good shape, customer wants to make kind-of a rat bike out of it. Runs like crap so let's fix it! Definitely fuel related. Maybe vacuum issues. Who knows! Watch and see!

    Thank you! Finally got my 1300 running perfectly. You mentioned the air/mix screw seat being dirty and it was corroded. Had to mechanically clean, spray didn't do shit. Also a vacuum leak from a loose clamp on the manifold. I also 1500 sanded the slider and sleeve to give a smoother slide. I'll have a beer in your honor! Been chasing this for 8 months. SO HAPPY!

    One cool thintg about the VTX1300 is that it is, to my knowledge, the only big four V twin that uses a single crankpin. Really gives it that desirable idle sound.

    SUBSCRIBED. Buddy just bought a 04 VTX 1300 he said it ran fine last year when his friend owned it but this year it started running like crap. He tried helping his buddy get it running again. I noticed he put a non fuel hose on it and was completely routed wrong. some one before him possibly his buddy or some one before his friend owed it tried to gut the top muffler. Now i have it in my shed and working on it so he doesn't mess it up anymore . Cleaned the Carb and all manage to get it to start and idle with out using the choke yesterday. today after watching your video i think I'm going to replace the Vacuum lines. But the issue we are having is when giving it throttle it sputters and backfires bad and wants to die ( only when giving it throttle ). I noticed the front left side spark plug is fouled but all other 3 are fine. so we are changing those out Thursday. but i also notice the it has a main jet #200. i know stock is #195 and it also has jet needle that is adjustable. Air intake box looks stock but looks like the front chrome cover has a PUNISHER cut out design on it. filter look"s stock Would you possibly have any thoughts what could cause it.

      @@twiztedbacon that’s probably why it has the 200 main, probably a jet kit installed with the exhaust. One fouled plug doesn’t necessarily mean it’s running too rich. Could simply be a bad plug. You can certainly try a 195, but your issues sound more like slow circuit problems if it’s popping and stumbling just off idle. You definitely have to check and or replace the vacuum hoses. The other thing is make 100% sure the entire slow circuit is clean. Remove the slow screw and the slow jet and blow that circuit out. I can’t remember which engine had the accelerator pump, the 1300 vs the 1800 or maybe both (I’m brain dead lately) but if it has one you must make sure that’s working. Just flick the throttle with the air box removed and watch for a squirt out of the tiny brass nozzle on the inlet end of the carb bore. Vacuum hoses and that accelerator pump diaphragm are common issues. Finally, check all the band clamps. Every one of these Honda v twins I’ve worked on had loose carb holder clamps. There’s one main going into the manifold and one each where the manifold attaches to each head.

    Very nice and helpfull video! Please, can you advise me how is it with compatibility of carburetor for VTX? I have VTX 1300C - 2009 and I would need to replace old carb with new original caburetor but I can see only 16100-MEA-A01 for year 2006-07 in Japan on stock as available as my model of carb was discontinued yet. Will be this model working with my bike? I think there is probable a difference that my carb already has not a "pre-heating" with engine coolant but nobody is able to confirm that. I would really appreciate any advise at this case. Thank you very much!

    I just bought a 2004 VTX 1300C. It came with some Dyno run paperwork showing they did some carb tuning in 2005. It has Vance and Hines pipes as well. So far it runs well but has a annoying backfire when decelerating. Some times its a quiet pop sometimes its a loud pop depending on how hard you back off it. I also notice little pops and cracks that are pretty quiet when going down the road at around 40mph. What in your opinion would this point to? I have spent some time on forums and have heard everything from crush washer for where the exhaust mates to swapping the jets or a pair valve removal. This is my second bike so I am going completely off research and others! Any help is greatly appreciated. Love the video very informative.

      Step 1, pull the tank and check all the vacuum lines. Check them all from the source at that center manifold to the "T" joints and to where they terminate. There's the one to that PAIR that you cannot see with the tank in place. I have found that either broken or not even connected on the last two VTX's. There is a vacuum line going to the air cutoff valve on the carb. That is the main doohickey which affects decel backfiring. That valve it connects to opens under strong vacuum like in a deceleration condition, and restricts air flow to the slow circuit thus enrichening it. At the same time, pull the spark plugs and read them. You can find that info on the interweb. Need to see if it's running lean. Step 2, if all that fails, you're going to have to pull the carb and go through it, making sure the jet circuits are good, but I can't give you any other jetting suggestions without knowing what jets are in it already, probably replacing items like the air cut valve, maybe the carb needs more love than you think. Cheers.

    I have a 2006 VTX1300R and the top pipe gets hot as crap, I almost have to ride sidesaddle going down the road lol I bought some wrap for it, but would love to find out what is causing it to be so hot. Mine pops a lot, too, on deceleration but I am currently rebuilding the carb and recently gutted the airbox and put bigger jets in it. Curious to see how all that changes things.

    Hi, excellent job on filming and explaining everything in such details. I'm new to carb bikes and my 07 VTX 1300 cranks strong but it won't turn over. New spark plugs, cleaned carb, petcock working good, new battery, all fuel and vacuum lines in good shape. On the same day bike ran good before stalling have tried everything but no luck. Can a bad float needle valve cause this problem? Thank you in advance..

    • @MotoRestoFL
      @MotoRestoFL  Рік тому

      If it was just running well and suddenly stopped and refuses to restart, first thing to check is spark. Assuming the battery is truly good, check to see it has spark with a spark plug hanging against the head. If it doesn't you'll have to go through an electrical diagnostic procedure, I usually start by metering the battery just to make sure of proper voltage, then grab a wiring diagram and isolate the ignition system circuit and work that circuit path until something is found. If it does have spark, your fuel supply suddenly stopped working and its probably in the petcock and/or fuel tank itself. How good is the fuel? That bike uses those damned vacuum actuated fuel switches so it should have a PRI setting on the fuel switch itself. Turn that to PRI and try and starting. If it runs, your fuel cock is bad. Do not leave it in that setting. You need to fix the problem. Back to electrical -- many, if not all, bikes get ignition power through the kill switch and if the kill switch is in the off position, won't even crank. However, it is possible to have a bad connection there and it'll still crank but not passing much current to fire the coils. So if there's no spark, intermittent spark or similar, I'd check there somewhere along the diagnostic road. Cheers.

      @@MotoRestoFL Hi, Hi, Spark plugs are good- Tested the ignition system is good. I found out the carburetor isn't getting any fuel. Petcock is holding good vacuum but no fuel going into the carb. Cleaned the fuel lines but still nothing.

    • @MotoRestoFL
      @MotoRestoFL  Рік тому

      @@MohammadKhan-eg5dz Petcock and/or fuel tank plugging the petcock up. You need to replace the petcock if there is no fuel getting to the carburetor and might as well replace the fuel hose while you're at it, if it's that bad. If someone stuck a fuel filter in-line between the petcock and carburetor, replace the fuel cock and fuel hose, toss that fuel filter because the filtering is in the petcock. If the tank is rusty/cruddy you will have to address that and I mean 100% or nothing will stop fine particulate of rust and junk from making it past the petcock filtering or even an inline filter. Tank must be clean. Or replace the tank. Cheers.

      @@MotoRestoFL Hi, I had an extra brand new petcock vacuum diaphragm available that I installed yesterday but still no luck it didn't change anything. Should I go ahead and just replace the petcock completely? Also, when I try to start the motorcycle I don't hear fuel pump kicking on. Not sure if the 2007 VTXs have an electric fuel pump but no sound of any kind.
      Thank you for help.

    • @MotoRestoFL
      @MotoRestoFL  Рік тому

      No. It’s gravity fed. You won’t find a vacuum petcock in a fuel pump bike. No need. The thing is probably plugged solid and crud in the tank. Remove/replace/clean the petcock and inside of the tank.

    Thanks for sharing. I too ride a 2005 VTX 1300c but lately there is a lot of engine vibration to the point that my hands go numb after a 30 min ride in the interstate.
    Had the carb cleaned at the dealership, have new tires, oil and spark plugs are New yet the engine vibration is painful.
    Any advise how to fix this. Thanks

    • @MotoRestoFL
      @MotoRestoFL  Рік тому +1

      Well, first thing is to decide right up front, is there a change in your bike or a change in your health? In other words, could a medical condition or just normal aging progression, decay in health, etc. per individual (we all have them) causing your problem? In other words, the bike may not be changing, you might be. Now, if that's not the case at all, the first thing I'd be checking is bolt torques on the engine mount bolts, handlebar and triple tree bolts, anything that would aid the vibration. You could also try some handlebar end weights, the kind that go in and you tighten a screw on the outside and it opens up an inner expansion nut which captures the ID of the handlebar. You'd probably have to modify or change the hand grips and that's yet another thing, you could try a different grip set that may be easier to grasp; in other words, if your grips are worn you'll have the tendency to clench them tighter so as to not slip off and that can also add to your hand issues. Second to lastly, go on VTX forums and Facebook pages, ask about this, see what others have done to mitigate it. Lastly, please consider consulting a physician to check you out and see if perhaps, just perhaps, you are joining the ranks of many who plain and simple, just getting old and falling apart (like me). Cheers.

    Never seen a VTX1300 with tube type tires. Have a flat on that thing, and if you survive the blowout, you are completely stranded. Hopefully you have a way to call a tow truck, and a way to pay for it. As far as those PAIR valves, those things are BAD. I have owned several bikes that had them, and always got rid of them, and all the lines and hoses, and capped and plugged fittings as necessary. One of them, on a Kawasaki Vulcan 750, literally filled a 5 gallon bucket full of parts. That did include the EVAP system, which I also always remove.
    That bike is a real mess, but 2005 is not very old. I have a 2002 Honda Shadow 1100 Spirit and a 2006 H-D Sportster 1200L. Both in almost like new condition. I will not own any bike that is not carbureted. That thing must have been setting out in the weather most of it's life. The rubber lines and hoses on mine are soft and pliable, not cracked, pretty much like new. No rust or corrosion.
    The decel popping is likely caused by the PAIR system, and a lean A/F mixture. I would definitely take the carburetor apart, inspect it, and clean it. If it has set for any length of time with ethanol in it, the inside is probably badly corroded and plugged up.
