NEGLECTED? '85 Honda VT1100 sidecar swamped by hurricane? Can I save it?
Переглядів 1,1 тис.14 днів тому
This Honda VT1100 Shadow with California Friendship 2 sidecar was pristine when I finished the original project in 2021. Owner neglected it and allegedly, it was swamped by a hurricane. How bad is it? Can I save it? Will it run? Please note: due to the severity of the damage to this outfit, all repairs have been called as non-viable and there will be no further videos on this project. The origi...

Concours 14 fuel filter replacement (fuel pump removal/teardown)
trade it for an injected 1800. problem solved
Greeting from the UK Very interesting vids. I've got an 85 GPz750A3. Owned it since new but it's been off the road for the last 15 years. Local Freelance Bike Mechanic Re-Commisioned it for me as I didn't feel confident to just hit that starter! Mine doesn't have the two square vacuum boxes (?) on the top of the engine (I presume they're a US mod). Great to see someone actually doing the jobs on the same bike. I've got a lot of cosmetic work to do but just enjoying the riding at present, which lets face it is what biking is all about! Cheers.
Is there a trick to getting the cam chain tensioner push rod to stay in ?
I just got an 04 VTX 1300 in almost perfect condition for $1500 but it doesn’t run. It’s got good compression and spark but I don’t think it’s getting fuel. Gonna check the carb today.
Great job Great Idea with the Petcock!
I didn't know they made the 18s in the orange flame paint job. I got the same paint job on my 2005 saber 1100
Sad to see such a nice setup go to waist. Salt water is a bad deal. Enjoyed the video,Tom and thanks for sharing and RIDE SAFE OUT THERE! Had to order a new fuel pump for the VFR750. I'm looking at a nice NINJA 1000R 20k on the meter.
It sucks that your hard work went to waste, but hey ho, life goes. Hopefully you'll get back into the groove and start being more positive from now on, not nice seeing you feeling down mate. Take care. 👍
Bummer about all of the water damage. Right choice but I sure like your work (would say i like watching you work but that sounds like something management would say).
1.27.25. 💁🏻♂️Tom, those VFD‘s are programmable for ramping down….
Yes they are, I did see that in the programming, I'll start playing with those settings as well, thanks.
I have those same carbs and I wish I would of seen your video sooner because the pilot jet tip on one of them broke off in there and I was wondering if you had any useful tips on how I may proceed with getting that removed. The bike sat in my grandpas garage for the last 40 years so I have my work cut out for it
If you have a customer that brings you a 2014 Honda TRX420TE that has sat for years and nothing works. Let me know. I'm going thru that now. Initial tests after I had charged the battery did show 12V. ES will not work and no crank on anything. I can't even jump the solenoid. I added my jump pack (just incase). The shift started to work, but still no crank. I have ordered the replacement solenoid after seeing there was rust on the hot side. Only time will tell....
Well, if you went right to the solenoid and bypassed all the interlocks, it must be the solenoid itself. Remember, could be on the ground side of it, not just on the B+ side. Cheers.
Electrical issues are no fun. I had a 2004 Honda Foreman 500 with lots of issues. The meter was in such horrible shape that I had to get a new one. just to see what the heck was wrong with it. When I did get the meter it kept saying the same code. I can't remember the number now but it was the TPS code kept flashing. There were lots of issues from the carb being so horrible, that a replacement card had to be purchased. Now here is the kicker, as stated earlier about the flashing TPS sensor. After numerous times to adjust and purchasing a tester for multiple TPS sensors. The only way to fix this issue was to purchase the OEM carb from Partzilla. Lots of waster time trying to figure that one out.
I think Honda usually has a resistance measurement in the service data of any carbureted unit with a TPS, that's an interesting diagnostic.
Hi, do you konw if any of the valkyrie parts from factory have any asbestos on it? Thanks heaps.
Have no idea. You may have to ask Honda about that.
I have this one and I want to do the same exhausts one on each side…besides the exhausts what else I need….🎉
Not sure, this one was that way when I worked on it. I'd imagine replacement exhaust gaskets and maybe some bracketry? If you can find a model in the Honda parts fiche with two exhausts you can drill down in the fiche and find the OEM part numbers, but I've never done that.
Must be those horseapple ranch exhaust.
Horseapple Ranch?

Hi mate definitely rust had that a few times working on “stored “ bikes comes out for ages - love your work regards Jim
Thanks. This thing is going home soon, won't be finished because it's too far gone.
Yep, swingarm needs to come off, another job for MOTORESTO Enjoyed the video Tom and RIDE SAFE OUT THERE!
I did remove it, Henry, it didn't actually "need" to be removed but ended up soaking the dang thing in Evaporust. This thing is going back unfinished, the more I got into it, the more I realized it's a lost cause. Maybe it could be saved, but money wise it's not worth it. I offered the owner a small amount to buy it, so he doesn't have to mess around anymore, but doesn't look like that's gonna happen. You should see the inside of the sidecar tubular frame. I pulled the tub off the frame and water poured out soon as I unbolted one bolt. I stuck my dangly bit camera up into the frame and using the side camera, there is huge amounts of rust and corrosion inside the frame. At that point, I called this a done deal and am putting it back together now. It's unfortunately just not worth someone putting significant amounts of money into.
@@MotoRestoFLsad to see such a nice setup go to waist. RIDE SAFE OUT THERE! Have the VFR750 carbs synced.
That is a shame, she was very nice when she left you a few years back, now 😢
Yep. Neglect and more neglect.
I know how you feel, last year I made a SLR650 that stood 3 years in the rain. Was a mess as well. 😢😢 Videos on my channel.
Don't be too upset at the owner. Life happens to us all. They should be totally transparent with you though. Great channel and I always enjoy your videos. A lot of $ and time to get this back on the road. Surprised the owner is doing that.
Thanks. He is not doing that ultimately. I decided to move over to the sidecar for awhile and figured I'd pull the tub off like I said in the video and when I undid one of the long 5/16 lag bolts, water started pouring out. After I banged out two of the lag bolts on the back side of the frame, I stuck my borescope up into one of the holes and selected the sideways camera and WOAH, a huge amount of rust and corrosion inside the frame. So I called this a done deal and not worth it. I offered to buy the whole thing and possibly save it, and if I did I'd just donate it to like Tunnel to Towers or K9 for Warriors some organization like that, but doesn't look like that's going to happen so it's going back together now and likely will be returned back to owner in a running, but not really usable condition.
not a nice one to do.
All of that hard work you did on transforming that "Circus" monstrosity into a decent looking bike.........WASTED, no wonder you peed off, I know I would be too Tom. Best of luck getting it fixed.......AGAIN!!!!!
Enjoyed the video, Tom. Hope it all works out like you want/need. Thanks for sharing and RIDE SAFE OUT THERE!
Boy I envy you Tom, maybe one day I can get to play with all that cool stuff. Still trying to get my last year in at FD, but then have to pay full price for medical insurance for wife and I until I hit 65.
I have been paying full price since 2016 but my wife gets hers from her work. I have about a year and half until Medicare then the insurance drops automatically pretty much since I buy in from the municipality as a deduction. By the way, if you do get to a point where you're getting health insurance deducted from like a pension payment, you can deduct a max of $3k from taxes for public safety retirees only. Cheers.
@ thank you for the info.
Very interesting video Tom. I saw Ichabod come into the shop, was he reminding you to get in the house before your wife got mad? 🤣
Nah. He was looking for food. lol
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Im looking at a 2003. If I needed to get this done, approximately how much would it cost?
Typically, a full carb job, and I mean "the works" with removal, complete teardown, OEM parts rebuild, testing, reinstalling, synchronizing and such can cost as much as $1,500 and up. Parts have really skyrocketed and it's a ton of work to do it correctly and with due diligence to detail.
A very needed masterclass since my VFR is acting up a lil bit. Thanks a ton 😄
Sorry for the delay in replying, thanks for the comment and glad it helped.
@@MotoRestoFL Yes it did, thanks to you, I unclogged the enricher feed at the carb bowl, it was completely blocked and I didnt even realize where it got the fuel from until I watched your videos, thanks again. I am still waiting for a silicone water hoses kit and thermostat o-ring to arrive, since it started leaking coolant too. The whole bike is separated into pieces and is hardly recognizeable, but Im hoping it will come back together better than its ever been in years.
Im a new subscriber. I love this channel. Great sense of humor
Well, now there's three of you who do... lol... thanks.
I found your video when my Kobalt compressor, which came with a 3 year warranty, failed in this manner. I bought it 3 years and 1 month ago. The Chinese have this down to a science.
Peanut butter aluminum. More like die cast metal.
Seems if I had your tools and expertise, I'd chuck that crap part and make a new one out of good USA steel. Just sayin'.
That's hard to justify, if you're referring to that peanut butter die cast aluminum part. It'd require single-pointing metric threads to get that to thread back into the main body of the regulator and would be very tricky at least on my lathe. Not supposed to disengage the half nut when threading metric and I'd have to thread away from the part, which means there'd be a thread relief necessary and there's not enough material to really do that. A lathe with a spindle brake (a foot brake) would be more suitable. And I die would never work, it'd be a huge die and impossible to start straight. Just buying a whole new regulator and adapting it is probably a better option. Something decent quality.
I LOVE YHIS CHANNEL!!
Ok, now there's four of you who do! lol... thanks.
Thank you! My Honda Ruckus was doing the exact same thing and your video was very helpful.
No kidding. I'll remember that. I just worked on a Ruckus for my neighbor who's an Antique Harley restorer and his daughter's Ruckus was being naughty so I had to do some carb work. If one comes across with ignition issues I'll take your advice. Thanks.
Very good and entertaining too. Well done.
Another great video tom! can’t wait to get down there and enjoy some riding out to say hello- and watch the sunset for the first time on the Gulf Of America 🇺🇸!! make the weather nice for us at least for a day or two the first couple weeks of february! Where can I buy some needle dick pliers? Great vid.
Love the machining videos. Something about machining metal is very satisfying.
In french please?
french fries maybe.
Tom, I enjoyed the video . Nice work. Thanks for sharing and look forward to the next episode. RIDE SAFE OUT THERE!
Excellent physics lesson thankyou! When reinstalling the hydraulic one. It's normal to turn the engine in the normal direction until it pops out?
That's what the manual says... I try to follow the service data as close as possible.
great video, i just bought a 1987 HONDA Magna VF 700, it was parked for a long time i got it running and when i drive the bike taking off is good when i give it a little throttle i hear a thonking noise once i take off it drives good, but when i slow down in 1rst gear, give it a little gas it does it again, that thonking or clanking noise after watching your video i think thats what i am hearing the bike only has 19,000 miles what are your thoughts
Hard to say. May be U Joint related, but with only 19K it'd be hard to believe there's an issue with the bevel gears in the final drive on the engine side, but it's possible. Check the engine mounts. 1st gear provides a lot of torque and can move the engine easily. If not that, def check the final drive up to, and including the rear end.
Wow. I think you just solved my problem. I noticed those tangs yesterday and wondered why they were there. Lol
Replace.
Replace with what? These aren't available new. The ones in this video ARE the replacement.
Awesome video 💪
I have taken the carbs from the left side several times. That is without disturbing the coolant bypass. You do need to remove the thermostat cable and shroud from the right side so there's room to angle the carbs as they come out from the left. Regarding the throttle cable I use a couple of long Ampro 10mm wrenches that angle ¼ of a turn each time... patience.
That's interesting. The service manual also mentions the possibility of loosening the engine mounts and moving the engine to them to come out the right side, I'm wondering if slight variances in the frame jig and manufacturing allow some to come out the left and others to simply not go that way, like mine. Regarding the cables, yes I can get at the nuts, definitely can reach them while installed; but getting the feruled ends back in with them installed, there's no way my fat fingers could do that. Cheers.
Nice show!
Can you add the Handy Video you saw for the lubricant and rebuild. Thanks
ua-cam.com/video/fdATN2Ej1EY/v-deo.html. I'll add it to the description.
I’m just curious why you don’t adjust them while it’s running? Typically motorcycles are synchronized while running. Hum?
Good question. You can't get at the adjusters for #2 and #4 at all, with the engine running, even with my Motion Pro 90 degree adjuster tool. They are simply not accessible. I have updated videos on doing these carbs again, they're my most recent ones in the playlist. I mentioned it there but did not in the video you commented on.
