  • Martin Guitars may have discovered time travel. They seem to be able to consistently create new guitars that feel, sound and weight just like vintage examples of these models. The latest of these vintage gems is the Martin Guitar D-18 Authentic 1937 Aged. Utilizing VTS technology along with old building practices Martin has created a beautiful vintage styled guitar that is a joy to play and has a wonderful played in tone. The aging of the guitar is subtle and pairs nicely with the overall aesthetic. Check out Cooper's full review and demo.

Wonderful. I have a custom D18 guitar with spruce top and Ziricote back and sides. It is amazing. If I am talking when I walk through the room it rings from it's hanger on the wall. I love the D18.

Perfect showcasing. Full beautifully articulated tones and delightful overtones. Great guitar. Wish I had a lot of unencumbered cash, this one would be in my collection.

IMO, as beautiful as it sounds, I'm not sure I would pay this premium solely for the aged features. To me, the point of buying something vintage is the story that comes with it and that's what makes it special. For an vintage D-18, I would prefer to dig a bit and look for an authentic well-worn one. BTW, perfect demo via Coop's playing.

Cooper, great review. I've got small hands especially for the overly large rest of me--so, maybe objectively medium-small--and I prefer the beefier necks. I've got a '99 D-28 with a smaller (but I gather not very smallest, "most modern") neck at first glance/feel you would think I would prefer,...but my pair of 'lawsuit' Takamines--one a virtual clone of this cosmetically--with their comparatively baseball bat necks, get more playing time partly because of. Just more comfortable ergonomically. They just feel more like the classic older Martins of yore to me. In other words, like a favorite old t-shirt - you don't even notice - they just fit.

Nice review and as always a great demo. I must admit, and it may be just me, but I've never fully understood this "let's make it look like old vintage guitar despite that it's a brand new instrument" idea. I mean there's nothing wrong about guitar being a fresh, new piece of instrument and this sort of fake aging with all those scratches and stuff has never done it for me, but to each their own. For me a scratch on a guitar is meant to be a reflection of a real story associated with the guitar. But nevertheless, sounds beautiful.

Yup….I agree. The factory aging of the finish is like a game of “let’s pretend”. The VTS treatment is fine with me as is the thinner nitro lacquer as those things add functional benefits. That being said, people can spend their money any way they want.

Depends on the make. If you’re twenty but want a Strat NOW that doesn’t look like a plastic toy, relic’s the only way to go. Acoustics I care less about, same with Les Pauls or 335s. Basically, relicing makes Strats look tougher/less feminine.

Hi Cooper, I just watched your review of the D18 1937 Authentic. Last night I watched your review od the Yamaha FG9 R. I can see they are totally different but I'm wondering which you like better tone wise , action wise. And how would the new Martin HD 28 compare to these? Thank you for responding.

nice guitar and review. The thicker neck means that there is no truss rod running down the neck. Prefer it to skinny necks .

Imagine you’re 20 years old and don’t want to wait for the wood to cure. These are thermally treated Adirondack, you can buy this or pay ten times as much for vintage prewar.

I like your channel a lot. But I disagree with your comment that this is the improved model.. I have consistently found that the non VTS guitars sound much better than the ones with the toaster top. And my 2005 D18 authentic 37 Is a better guitar than the current iteration.
