WOW! It sounds great! I love a good 18 with a chunky neck. The first authentic I played was a 28 at the factory. It was a lefty, so I had to hold my tongue just right and use the other side of my brain, but the first chord made my wife look up and ask, “What guitar was that!” Martin can really put out some great instruments. Thanks for sharing this with us.
sounds beautiful guys - loved the blooper at the end, that's why we keep coming back! Great chemistry and brotherhood, glad you boys can have fun on the job
That is one exceptionally great-sounding guitar. I say they are not building them like they used to; they're building them so much better now that they've examined the older instruments in fine detail. I still maintain we are in a platinum age of acoustic guitars (we are way past golden). Between legacy builders producing top-notch instruments to boutique luthiers building what you want, this is the time to live in for acoustics.
Someone put a dinged up cedar top Alvaez-Yairi in my hands, and said, "You'll like this." 28 years later, it's still my prized possession. But, YOWZA! That baby is undeniable. And it has passed final QC inspection in this decade.
I love them all, truly I do, but the D-18 A is my favorite. I liked the first run of 37s, and was super glad when they brought these back. I had the opportunity to play one of the first prototypes out of the custom shop.
I have one from the original release. Somewhere around 2007. Guessing date without looking up. Has the chunk neck. I love the wider neck. Sound is incredible and volume.
I'm glad that I bought my 39AA from you when I did, as that model is now discontinued. Martin keeps getting incrementally closer to their true 1937 specs. Maybe by 2033 at the Martin Bicentennial they'll get it just right. I do wish that Martin had matched the headstock decal on this D-18 '37 Authentic the same as the newer D-28 '37 Authentic. When you're paying this much cash for a new Martin it should be exactly the way that you'd like it. Great playing!
D-18’s are a wonderfully versatile guitar and the authentic’s are a superb example? One improvement that would make Martin guitars better is if they would produce variety of neck styles to suit the player?
does anyone know if the neck on these is much larger than a round D from a Gibson? Gibson necks are my favorite but these seem bigger. although not a real V as I don't like those and mod low oval Martin necks are too thin for my liking
Regarding the subtle size difference in this '37 Authentic, to my eye the lower bout appears to be slightly wider, and with more of a rounded bell shape than that of the standard Martin dread.
Wouldn't the D-18 standard be the most "authentic"? The jargon is confusing.... Also, does it sound over three grand better than the standard? What do you think Quinton?
@Gregory Carpenter - well, if you listen to this Music Villa demo, there's a definite difference: ua-cam.com/video/PokPMgGdR_U/v-deo.html. But then, that could be due to various factors (mic, position of the mic, recording settings, etc).
I’ve got a question , it seems most people want the pre WW2 Martin guitars because they sound better . And I assume these were the standard line of guitars at the time . What caused Martin to change the guitars over time to not sound as good anymore ? Why aren’t the Martin guitars today at least as good or better ? Or is this just some marketing strategy to charge a lot more money for reissues of old Martin guitars ?
First of all nothing can replace age. These are dam good. But nothing is as good as GREAT old ones because of the age. However Martin is making some of the best guitars they've ever made right now and some will blue away a Martin from the 60s for instance. Second part to why they stopped is bracing and strings. Back in the pre war, and right after that era, they had HEAVY strings. Heavier than our mediums. So it was causing structural issues, and severe warranty issues. So they started going a little heavier braced and then strait eventually. As strings changed and tastes started to, Martin realized they could now make lighter guitars again and that it was desirable Second of all, the best Workers Martin ever had were pre war. Dyeing the depression you had people putting everything they had into their work. So they played a part Also, alot if the pre war stuff has to be done by hand man. Notched braces that interlock. The scalloping itself. The finish on the aged ones are roughly 90% thinner than a normal finish and hand rubbed. Martin has grown massively. They wouldn't be able to make them all like this and keep up. Particularly the hide glue aspect. Only certain builders at Martin are even equipped to use it. The best of the best With all that being said, lighter bracing, etc isn't always preferred either. Which is why Martin makes guitars of all shapes and sizes. Sure more responsive but not everyone wants that sound. Not everyone wants a dryer tone either Some of the most iconic Martin sounds in history are from Sitka topped d28s in the 60s. And yes, the 50s ones too. But they wrre strait braced. Go pick up a real 65 d28. Its heaven. And strait braced. Nothing can replace time and age. So they're just trying to get as much out if them as they can for people who want certain sounds now. Others want different sounds and want to listen tk their guitar age. Your d28, if you have one, will sound absolutely amazing in another 25 years boss. Will there? We'll see Also nothing can replace age either way. But these authentics are not a Marketing ploy. They're amazing. Although I might be finnaly be getting tired of FS bracing on dreads. I might go with the 39. To me, that's what hog sounds like
@@nathanpartin7197It's not marketing. The authentics are a different animal. But yes, time will make a great guitar an amazing guitar. A strait braced d28 will sound amazing in 40 years. But that doesn't mean the best CURRENT guitars for sound RIGHT NOW is the standard. It's the authentic. To most at least. Some like a standard sound
Of course it is haha. Why would you ever imagine that a d18 authentic wouldn't be Honduran mahogany? Bro tbe standard 18s are Honduran. The last thing yiy need to worry about on an authentic is if it's Honduran mahogany 😂 Its a $6000 Martin. It's the best Honduran
Great demo, guys!!! I LOVE MARTIN D-18'S!!!!!!
Paul mentions setting up the guitar: every one I've bought there has been checked. This guitar really sounds great up the neck (with capo).
WOW! It sounds great! I love a good 18 with a chunky neck. The first authentic I played was a 28 at the factory. One of the best sounding new guitars I've ever heard.

I love it! My hand wouldn't let me play it long, but it sounds fantastic. Thanks Quinton and Paul, especially for the Martin Dreadnought I got there.
Martin - nobody does it better, the Authentic series is in a league by itself
Wow! That sounds amazing!
Nice D18 and a great demo... nicely done.
Keep 'em coming!

Nice video I just bought this model last week love mine

Are you saying you like the 39 more or not?
D-18’s are a wonderfully versatile guitar and the authentic’s are a superb example? One improvement that would make Martin guitars better is if they would produce variety of neck styles to suit the player?
Well, Quinton could make a pair of Air Jordan's with tight shoe strings sound like a vintage Stradivarius! Very Nice!!
the major body difference is that it is almost straight where the body meets the neck rather than slightly rounded like a modern martin
Yeah more square shoulders
dang... someday.
today....is that day
How much is the chunky neck guitar?
My DRS 2 first starting model sounds good; I either use Daddario medium or Elixirs medium pb
The bluegrass standard, thar she be !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Damn...Q can play! Luv a D 18. 👍
that's a keeper.
does anyone know if the neck on these is much larger than a round D from a Gibson?
Gibson necks are my favorite but these seem bigger. although not a real V as I don't like those
and mod low oval Martin necks are too thin for my liking
much better forward shifted bracing than the 1939
i played the 39 way too dryyy and crispy
Regarding the subtle size difference in this '37 Authentic, to my eye the lower bout appears to be slightly wider, and with more of a rounded bell shape than that of the standard Martin dread.
It’s what’s for dinner, eh Quinton?

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I think it's hard to tell. The sound set up on the two videos could
be different....
Not really. The 30s Martins are considered the peak of Martin and the beginning of the dreads
Does it have a pick up?
No, it doesn't come with one but you can have one installed.
Of course not. What is authentic about that?
yeah 3 ron ellis....and a floyd rose
Great! Pls try and include just a bit of finger picking in your videos 🙃 I know you often do. thank you guys!
Wowsers! The overtones have overtones.
Why can't you ever play a little elegently in stead of strumming like a beast as always..
hahaaa cause he is ...an animal!!!
Ein durchgeknallter Preis. 🤦♀️
BTW That is the worst that guitar will sound. It only gets better from there.

Time makes guitars open up and sound better. The Martina today are great it's marketing
First of all nothing can replace age. These are dam good. But nothing is as good as GREAT old ones because of the age. However Martin is making some of the best guitars they've ever made right now and some will blue away a Martin from the 60s for instance.

If I could handle the neck and big body I'd own one. I'm an OM guy.
Nice guitar. Overpriced!
Is it Honduras mahogany? If not, then it is not authentic.
Sure looks and sounds like Honduran to me! I’m calling it 100% authentic!
Yes it is.
Of course it is haha. Why would you ever imagine that a d18 authentic wouldn't be Honduran mahogany? Bro tbe standard 18s are Honduran. The last thing yiy need to worry about on an authentic is if it's Honduran mahogany 😂
Its a $6000 Martin. It's the best Honduran
Also - does it have Sitka bracing? Because in the old days in 1920 - 1944 with adi tops Martin used Sitka bracing not adi braces!
Some guitars are sound better then these Martin
Use a better capo next time.
