Pentatonix takes great pride in being able to perform all their music in live setting. Their TV special Christmas live performances probably are the best in terms of sound quality.
Scott is a "lyric baritone", meaning he has a wider than typical range. In his case, both upwards and downwards. Matt (who you called Kevin) is a lyric bass. While Scott and Matt's actual ranges overlap a great deal, what classifies them as bass vs. baritone is the _vocal texture_ they have while singing lower or higher notes. Kevin (who you called Matt) is beatboxing, percussion, and on occasion cello.
Conflating voice parts in contemporary music with classic opera voice types invites argument. You try to make distinctions that make no practical difference in PTX arrangements & roles. Avi's range is far lower than Scott's. Matt's is slightly lower. But, Scott can usually cover the bass line and/or the bass notes in their harmonies. As a practical matter, this enables them to provide a variety of leads and a wall of sound that is hard to replicate with only 5 singers.
@@garyblocker9135 Avi wasn't here, and thus unmentioned, but no arguments re him. I was attempting to explain WHY, with nearly identical ranges, Scott is a baritone and Matt is a bass. If you have a better definition I would accept it, without argument. Would you take me to task for calling Avi a _basso profundo?_ Would you debate me calling Mitch a countertenor, vs. Kevin's regular tenor? Kevin's hit higher notes (Kiss From A Rose) but only in falsetto. Mitch is still in head voice in that range. Vocal texture, as I called it, being the difference.
Kristie's mom put her in voice lessons age 8. Around that time she met Mitch, both doing as many shows as possible. They went to high school with Scott and they all did as much singing as possible. They did youtubes as "The Trio". Scott got talked into trying "The Singoff" so they found Kevin and Avi (needed 5) and had one day to rehearse but won the show. Quite awesome. Watching the show is fun, very very young kids. Kristie always wanted to do shows and has. They do a lot of their own arranging as a group practice. Also awesome. The show came with a record contract but they got dropped so they started their odyssey on youtube self promoting, the results you know.
My daughter loved the Disturbed cover of this one and she totally freaked that I could recite the lyrics. I first heard it in 1966. Great reaction, as always.
Kevin, on the right in black, and yes there are live versions with him beat-boxing...just crazy, Matt bass on left in white,. The best one is the one singing at that time for me..just truly, magically gifted.
Hello beautiful Schnell and beautiful PTX fans! The beats/percussion is all Kevin Olusola(He has solo stuff as well) Matt is the Bass, but when he sings, Scott takes over the Bass. The group has incredible versatility.
Oops, it is Kevin with the beatboxing (drums). Matt is the bass with the soulful singing voice. You really should review Kevin Olusola's verions of Down (Marion HIll). In that he sings, plays cello and much more. Amazing talent.
I have watched your reactions to PTX and really like your concept of what makes for great musical art is conveying the essence of the music to the listener. It is kind of "becoming the music". There are multiple levels of the concept. The composing ,the lyrics, the arrangement, the performance and now days add in the visual production too. PTX excels in all these areas. I'm 75 now and sang in choir, sang barbershop, played clarinet in school and later a little blues band. I feel very fortunate to have music as a part of my life. Music actually led me to poetry and I have had a couple published and I first learned of Leonard Cohen as a poet before I learned of him as a singer/songwriter. I remember the first time I heard Sound of Silence with Simon and Garfunkle and I remember learning a Jazz version of Amazing Grace on clarinet so all of these songs done by PTX hold a special place in my heart and mind . I do not normally do not think of one version of a song being better than another. That is a false dichotomy in my mind. Music is pretty primal and speaks to a part of us that few other things can. Each version of a song will affect individuals differently and will affect the same person differently at different times of their life. When Sounds of Silence first came out the music was good but what really mattered back then was the words. We had not heard songs convey that kind of message until the "folk" era started with Bob Dylan, and later Joni Mitchell and many others. That's not to say they did not exist , it just wasn't getting broadcast . The concept of multipart harmony had been around for years though and "street groups" singing three and four part harmony were well known in most cities. It was brought onto the broadcast media by PP&M, Brothers Four, New Christy Minstrels, and others whose names have escaped my little gray cells for the moment. What hasn't escaped is the music and with a bit of luck never will. PTX is a godsend especially in this pandemic and make the "shelter in place" much more tolerable as do your reactions. So keep them up! I have gone on much too long but I wanted you to know that your thinking and your love of music (and your knowledge of it) is highly valued. Thank you. P.S. I second all the recommendations of those who preceded me here and would add that PTX has some amazing Xmas music as well. Oh, Come all ye faithful; is probably my favorite . It has changed that song for me forever. It is one time I will say it is better than any other I have heard (or sung).
You switched the names: Matt is the bass, with the white jacket, and Kevin is the beatboxer (and btw, he totally can do that live). Also, I don’t know if you know this, but Scott covers the bass line when Matt (previously Avi) is singing. I would personally suggest a reaction to “Gold”, which is live. Thank you for spreading kindness, we need it. Have a nice day!☺️
they all have great voices, each with its own texture and delivery, and all blend well with each other. I think everyone has a preference for one or the other. Personally, I marvel at Kevin's beatboxing, although I realize that at times, Avi (previously) and Scott make some of the sounds along with hm. Not sure if Matt does, since he's new, but he has a wonderful deep warm baritone sound so he fits well. Avi had a great bass voice. I wonder if Scott and Matt can reach down that far?
Sound of Silence is a Simon & Garfunkel original in 1966; Disturbed is a metal group who did an amazing cover in 2019 on Conan which boosted the song back into the spotlight.
The impressive thing about beatboxing isn't the sounds produced really. The majority of them are actually quite easy to do. I can do some of them quite well. The difficult and impressive thing is keeping up a constant flow of sounds. This I absolutely cannot do.
They perform Kiiara's "Gold" in a live studio session for a radio station, i think. The original artist needed loopers and audio manipulation to make a specific sound. PTX does it live.
For some scott features that are pretty amazing, his Lose Us with Rozzi is a great one as is his duet with Mario Jose doing Lost on You. Scott also did a song with Frankie called Ghost. And don't even get us started on the Superfruit stuff! Welcome to the world of the pentaholics!
Yaaa PTX!!! Thanks Schnell. Love the new schedule. I can't get enough of you reactions. Great job as always on this one to. Beatboxers rely on only a few effects with a mic (chorus, reverb compression but no other sounds added). All the sounds come from him.
Here's the members from left to right: Matt, Kirsten, Scott, Mitch, and Kevin! Kevin's beat-boxing is pretty much raw except for the obvious production that they all have for volume and clarity! Avi parted ways with the group a few years ago and he introduced Matt to the group and kinda showed him the ropes and everything. Scott's voice is also so low because when the bass takes the lead, he takes over the bass! If you wanted to rewatch this video, notice when Matt is taking the lead, Scott is doing the bass! Hallelujah is another piece where you can really notice Scott taking the bass over (while Avi is taking the lead.) I definitely recommend watching Sound of Silence live because it's SO accurate to this music video. Aha! Singapore is another live performance that REALLY showcases Mitch. I love Pentatonix, but I listen to music quite objectively, and this version is 100% my favorite version of this song.
Love your comment about Kristin being evergreen. It’s the title of their new holiday album dropped 2 weeks ago. Hope to see your reaction to I Just Called to Say I Love You and The Prayer (buckle up for that one!).
You’ll enjoy visiting each of their separate efforts. Mitch and Scott have Superfruit. Kirstin and Avi have solo efforts, and there are videos of Kirstin’s Broadway work. Kevin has some amazing videos involving singing, beatboxing, cello and saxophone. Scott has paired up with a number of singers to great effect. There’s a lot out there to discover and enjoy. You can even see the trio from high school (Scott, Mitch and Kirste). And there’s their very first public performance together as a group in season three of the Sing Off.
Hey Schnell! Loved the video!! I don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet but Matt(Bass) is the one in the white Jacket, Kevin is in all black(Beatbox). Avi left the group a few years ago. 2017 if I remember right. Would love to see more ptx videos! Have a good one!
Hi Schnell! Always great to have you back with PTX. I’m happy to hear you are continuing your PTX journey and enjoying it. As great as they sound individually, nothing comes to all of them together. Thanks for posting.
I recommend their newest release, which is an original song called Happy Now. It's amazing and Scott goes off in it, so you might like that :D. (also, newest right now, but there will be a new song this Wednesday - a cover of Mad World). As far as their live performances go, if you're not opposed to maybe a longer reaction, I must recomment their Popspring performance. It features four songs. Three original songs and their Evolution of Michael Jackson (which I think you've already seen, so you can kinda compare how they do it in front of an audience). Their performance of Aha! in Singapore, The Star Vista is also a classic one, but you won't really see Kevin there, because the camera focuses mostly on Mitch and Kevin is out of frame the whole time :).
You should check out Kevin Olusola ( or K O ) doing Down. He calls his covers KOvers. Do that and I don't think you will get Kevin's name wrong again. lol
As always, great video 🤗. And you did it again 😁... Kevin & Matt 😉. But that's the thing I'm enjoying about your reaction... pure, honest and sometimes little mistakes happen 😋. Keep it up 👍.
If you want to hear more of Matt, the bass (white jacket), you should react to their cover of ‘You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch.” (Ptx Christmas songs can be listened at anytime of the year.) It’s a Matt solo and it features Scott on bass. Kevin is the one that beatboxes.
Another great reaction! So Kevin is actually the beatboxer and Matt is in the white jacket, their bass now. As far as suggestions, I would say Mary Did You Know and their new original Happy Now. As far as live performances, their Sing Off journey where it all started for PTX. Of which there are 14 videos in total. Also Aha! from their tour in Singapore. The video is taken from a phone buts still good to watch. And lastly one of my favorite originals Misbehavin. They have a live performance of it from the iHeart Radio Honda Stage. I guess that’s it for now. I look forward to your next reactions. Until next time, take care!
There are videos of them performing completely off-mic if you want to hear them raw. My favorites of these are "Daft Punk", "Valentine", and "Take Me Home". These are private performances, usually for holders of VIP concert tickets. There are also a couple of videos of them called the Spaulding Session, where Avi and Kevin have mics, but I think there's little or no processing because they performed in a living room.
You might like Pentatonix performing What Is This Feeling from Wicked on NBC Special. There is an orchestra playing with them, not their choice I'm sure but you really don't notice it.
larry granbois sadly that performance has been removed from you tube. You can only see previously recorded reactions to it now or watch it on Twitter that wicked the musical posted.
You have got to check out PTX's rendition of Can you Feel The Love Tonight - Lion King. There is a wonderful surprise near the end. I've listened to it like 50 times. Please react. Have a great day!
Hey Schneider, Great reaction once again . You have mentioned in past reactions you like feeling the meaning of the song or the emotion that being said you should absolutely check out Mary did you know by Pentatonix and if you wanna hear a live performance check out Gold by Pentatonix.
You got Kevin and Matt mixed up! LOL It's okay, it took me a little bit of time to get everyone's names right! But yeah, Kevin's beat boxing is all him, nothing else. He is amazing! Keep up the great reactions!
Kirstin has her own youtube channel and she is awesome. I love the song Naked. Avi has his own channel as well as Kevin. Have you reacted to Wizard of Ahhhs. Epic also. Todrick Hall produced it and he was friends with Kirstin, Mitch, & Scott in High School. It's a take off of Wizard of Oz. Originals and Live performances to watch are, Originals- Happy Now, Run to You, Water, Kirstin and Kevin wrote. Cracked, Ref, Misbehavin, 'Na Na Na, Live- Hallehujah, Aha in Singapore at the Star Vista, Despicito, ...You can search on youtube for more. They are so talented!!!! Thank You for your reaction.
Matt is in the white suit & Kevin is the beatboxer but also sings sometimes fabulous voice. I'd like to recommend another acaprlla group Home Free but watch the video of their beatboxer Adam Rupp live to give you an idea what these guys can do with their voices ,mouths and overall bodies. You'll be amazed.
As usual, your reactions are "delicious"....but I'm sure others have already told you that Kevin is the beat-boxer and Matt is the bass. So you don't ever get confused again, I would strongly recommend (once more) Kevin's solo of "Down" which shows the versatility of that guy ...then you'll never forget him or confuse him with anyone else !! Keep 'em coming SJ !!
Nice reaction! Good Live videos are: Live In-Studio videos (all Evolution videos, Gold, No, Happy - mostly if you see them sitting around on a black background) Popspring 2016 Live Performance (4 songs professionally recorded from their set: Evolution of Michael Jackson and 3 originals) Hallelujah Christmas Special What is this Feeling from the Wicked Anniversary (fair warning, they have a live band backing them there) Aha! Live at the Singapore Star Vista (This is NOT great audio quality as it was filmed by a fan in the audience. Regardless, it's a good performance)
Nice reaction. Thanks. Some great suggestions are already posted. There are thousands of live PTX performances so you would just need to explore what you are interest in. For instance, in search, type Pentatonix (Live on the Honda Stage at iHeartRadio) or Pentatonix New Years Rocking Eve or Pentatonix on Jimmy Kimmel or Pentatonix Tour or Pentatonix Live or Pentatonix tv, etc. Lots to enjoy.
Love your pure reaction! But you have Kevin and Matt mixed up 😁 But yes, Kevin does these sounds live just the same. And Matt is Avi's replacement on the base. He has an amazing singing voice also. For live performances; Hallelujah Christmas special, and Aha, Singapore, and Gold! That last one is my personal favorite. The original is very heavily edited and tuned and Mitch just does it live like nobody's business! Keep it up🥰
He does it live too. Sorry for correcting everyone but her name is Kirsty. Like thirsty. She actually explained it like that in an interview because so many people call her different names. They are all very humble.
You have Matt and Kevin mixed up. Matt is wearing the white jacket and is Avi’s replacement and Kevin is the beat boxer. PTX also says if they can ‘t do something live they just won’t do it so you know Kevin is a cappella beat boxing. You do great reactions, I really enjoy them. Kevin has so many facets as a musician, beat boxer, cellist, singer, pianist, saxophone and has his own recording studio. His UA-cam site is KOvers, his name is Kevin Osulola and you should react to Marion Hill’s “Down”.He’s pretty amazing!
Youv have the 2 men of color mixed up the one on the right is Kevin (as you are looking at them) he does the sound effects, the beatboxer.Matt the bass is left.
You've got Matt and Kevin switched. Kevin is the beat boxer that has been with the group since the beginning. Matt is the new bass that took over after Avi left.
Trying to analyze who does what among Pentatonix might be a difficult job. They don't have a weak member and they have incredible vocal range individually. You commented on whether Kevin (beat boxer) sounds the same live. Other than the sound tech adding a touch of reverb sometimes, Kevin is the same live vs. in-studio. But then, PTX has made it a matter of pride that they will not drop a new video if they can't perform it live. No multi-track, no auto-tune (with one or two exceptions where it was specifically in the original arrangement.)
Go right ahead and check Scott out. It's not as if you nor I are going to run off cross country to put the squeeze on Mr. Scott. He's a great guy, but a squeeze back is all we'll get out of it. He has a long-term dedicated boyfriend.
Why does no one ever talk about Matt’s bass drop at the end of his verse?!! It’s by far the best part of the song!!
I like the run he does before the bass drop.
I love his Mr Grinch so good at his voice to that song 👍
As a practical matter, this enables them to provide a variety of leads and a wall of sound that is hard to replicate with only 5 singers.

I've seen them live. It's all voices. No tricks.
Also seen them live.... did EVERY SINGLE NOTE!
Matt Sallee is the bass. Kevin is the beatboxer.
ty lol i was abt to say
Me too. Does she read comments because we correct it in like every video she does of them.
Yes he (Kevin) can do it live. Matt (white jacket) is also a bass singer and uses his voice as an instrument!
Kristie's mom put her in voice lessons age 8. Around that time she met Mitch, both doing as many shows as possible. They went to high school with Scott and they all did as much singing as possible. My daughter loved the Disturbed cover of this one and she totally freaked that I could recite the lyrics. I first heard it in 1966. Great reaction, as always.
Kevin, the beatboxer, sounds exactly the same live. Pentatonix is just as amazing live as they are recorded.
Kevin, on the right in black, and yes there are live versions with him beat-boxing...just crazy, Matt bass on left in white,. The best one is the one singing at that time for me..just truly, magically gifted.

I’ve missed your reactions! Stay awesome 😎
Kevin is a musical genius. He has his doctorate. He plays the Cello in A kiss from a rose. Check it out
Mitch is me absolute favourite! They're all talented, but Mitch has a special place in me heart. He's so smol and talented and I love him so!
Oops, it is Kevin with the beatboxing (drums). Matt is the bass with the soulful singing voice. You really should review Kevin Olusola's verions of Down (Marion HIll). In that he sings, plays cello and much more. Amazing talent.

Sound of Silence is a Simon & Garfunkel original in 1966; Disturbed is a metal group who did an amazing cover in 2019 on Conan which boosted the song back into the spotlight.
Paul Simon said that Disturbs version was the best cover he had heard and said it was their song now because of it.

Doug Friesen thanks Doug! 😊
That’s so cool about the beatboxing!
Kevin normally does all the beat-boxing for PTX. He also does solo singing work. Check out the Kevin Olusola "Sign Of The Times" cover.
So difficult to pay attention to the videos with your stunning face on my screen, Schnell. 😍💙🎼

Love your comment about Kristin being evergreen. It’s the title of their new holiday album dropped 2 weeks ago. Hope to see your reaction to I Just Called to Say I Love You and The Prayer (buckle up for that one!).
Yup does it live I heard them last year with my Daughter - her first concert
Matt is in the white jacket. He also sings bass. Kevin is the beatboxer and sings tenor/baritone.
I have to say, that is the 1st time I've heard someone describe Kirsty's voice as "evergreen" - yet, it very much fits! Love it!
Kevin is a graduate of Yale majoring in classical music, plays the cello, piano and a wind instrument. Oh yeah he also sings
There are several live performances to watch and Kevin is absolutely not computerized 🤣.
You’ll enjoy visiting each of their separate efforts. Mitch and Scott have Superfruit. Kirstin and Avi have solo efforts, and there are videos of Kirstin’s Broadway work. Oh how far you have come in a year! WS shocked by the sound quality hehe. When is the baby diue? If I am late congratulations!!❤️
Kevin is the beatbox guy, and Matt is the new bass in this group..
Time for "AHA!" Live in Singapore! 💖
Yes he can do it live. Point of interest, Kevin, the beatboxer, is a graduate of Yale and plays the cello, piano and I think trumpet.
Wonderful

Hey Schneider, Great reaction once again . You have mentioned in past reactions you like feeling the meaning of the song or the emotion that being said you should absolutely check out Mary did you know by Pentatonix and if you wanna hear a live performance check out Gold by Pentatonix.
I'm a metal head and I love Pentatonix
You have to hear the original version by Simon and Garfunkel.
Pentatonix is all vocals no synths.
Simon & Garfunkel
@@ImFrelledI hate having to spell check my spell check. It gets me when I'm not prepared. Thanks.
Ha. Your husband will get used to it. Mine did 😍
Ouch
SAME!!!
Please react to Pentatonix singing their new original “Happy Now”
Scott found Kevin Orusola on you tube, celloboxing (beatboxing to his cello) he played classical saxophone at Carnagie Hall when he was a young teen
Another great reaction schnell:) keep up the good work😉
Thanks Mel! :)
Good Live videos are:
Live In-Studio videos (all Evolution videos, Gold, No, Happy - mostly if you see them sitting around on a black background)
Popspring 2016 Live Performance (4 songs professionally recorded from their set: Evolution of Michael Jackson and 3 originals)
Hallelujah Christmas Special
What is this Feeling from the Wicked Anniversary (fair warning, they have a live band backing them there)
Aha! Live at the Singapore Star Vista (This is NOT great audio quality as it was filmed by a fan in the audience. Regardless, it's a good performance)
They do a beautiful Silent Night live in a church. It is insanely good. It live unplugged.
Live ~~ Aha , Singapore, the Star Vista ~~ Mitch will amaze you!
I think it's so funny, Schnell mixed up Matt and Kevin every time. Matt is the bass (replaced Avi in 2017) and Kevin is the beatboxer.
And being a person of color after a few times that becomes annoying
Mary did you know is awesome.
Love your pure reaction! But you have Kevin and Matt mixed up 😁
But yes, Kevin does these sounds live just the same. Keep it up🥰
Kevin is the beatboxer and yes he can do it live!
Kevin is the beatboxer... and yes, that is all him. Yes, they can recreate all of this live. Matt is the new base.
You were close Kevin is beat boxer and Matt is the new base. love your reactions to PTX. Have you reactive to Home Free yet.
what made the song for me was Kirstie's power very high harmonies. Not sure I have ever heard her go to head voice...her upper range must be crazy.
If you enjoyed Scott's low voice, you should definitely check out Peter Hollens and Tim Foust doing this song.
Love your reactions!!! Now we need other people reacting to your originals🤘 any plans on posting an original soon?!
cant sleep love live at pop spring its filmed by mtv and its an original
whut? how? fantastic reaction
He does it live too. Sorry for correcting everyone but her name is Kirsty. Like thirsty. She actually explained it like that in an interview because so many people call her different names. They are all very humble.
Another great rendition of this song was done by the group "Disturbed" amazing vocals in both. check it out!!
Matt is the bass, kevin is in the beat box role
Watch beginners guide to Pentatonix
You will learn all about Pentatonix
How they met, formed the group
He can do the drum live and his name is Kevin..., Matt the bass is the gentleman on the left. You have their names switched.
Youv have the 2 men of color mixed up the one on the right is Kevin (as you are looking at them) he does the sound effects, the beatboxer.Matt the bass is left.
matt is the bass and kevin is the beatboxer
Great reactor
Please check out Pentatonix live Christmas Special singing Hallelujah.
Yep certainly amazing vocal group. 😀👍
If you get the chance, check out Voctave and the Disney Love Medley featuring Kerstin and her former fiance.
You should react to Pentatonix's song Sing!!!
You've got Matt and Kevin switched. Kevin is the beat boxer that has been with the group since the beginning. Matt is the new bass that took over after Avi left.
To hear Kevin (the beatboxer) sing check out, "Mary Did You Know?" and for his celloboxing check out "Shallow".
She have a pretty eyes
No Matt cannot do that live...But KO can! Haha. Matt is the bass, Kevin is the 808! Haha... I'm sure other's have said this already. Haha
Kevin is doing the beatboxing(drums)
Matt is the bass
