Update: A few hours ago Gillian Anderson was announced to join the cast of TRON: Ares! Source: deadline.com/2024/01/gillian-anderson-tron-ares-disney-1235800292/
Tron is one of my hands-down favorite movies in all of ever. I was over the moon when I learned that they were making a Tron sequel, and I was glad to see that Tron legacy was just as good as the original, if not better. But the way that Disney has been over the last several years has me genuinely worried. Though I'm happy to see a third Tron movie finally get made before I turn 50, I can't help but feel a sense of foreboding mixed in with hope. The fact that Lisberger is producing the movie like before, and despite Jared Leto's hit and miss reputation as an actor, the fact that he is a massive fan of Tron, keep my expectations just this side of cautious optimism. As for the possibility of seeing anyone from the prior movies, especially Bruce Boxleitner and Jeff Bridges, there has been no word confirming or denying their appearance in this movie, and if it's supposed to be a sequel, then I can't fathom how you could make a Tron movie without Tron. Sure, Bruce is getting long in the tooth, and would require deepfakes to reprise his role as the titular security program in in the same way that such technology was used for Luke Skywalker in the Mandalorian, I can only hope that he's a part of it. And though it would be sad to no longer see Jeff Bridges as Kevin Flynn again, his character did basically die at the end of the last movie, so not having him back is at least understandable. And of course, I'd love to see Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde back, but from what I've heard of the plot, it looks like they're taking it in a radically different direction from what day originally planned. I guess only time will tell.
I remember watching the original Tron in theaters in the Summer of 1982 at the age of 11, and then waiting 28 years was 40 and watched the sequel in December 2010. So cool their making a third installment. Will be there at the theater to see it, hopefully in 3d. Legacy took the graphics a whole level. I really enjoy watching the original and still watch from time to time. Love the light cycle sequence. Also I played the Tron game in arcades back in the 80s and played the sequel game on the pc back in 2003. Truly an underrated franchise.
What has made Tron so iconic is not the special effects, but the fact that the underlying story is not SCIENCE FICTION at all, but rather RELIGIOUS FICTION. Tron, the original Movie, was a pretty-straight re-telling of the Christ story: Flynn is a User who becomes a Program, just as Jesus is a God who becomes a Man. Many of the things that Flynn does correspond to classical Jesus scenes... the scene with the power-water corresponds to Jesus being baptized by John the Baptist (whose analogous character is Ram)... the scene with Flynn bringing back Lori corresponds to Jesus bringing back Lazarus. Flynn even, from the point of view of the programs, sacrifices himself and ascends to heaven on a beam of light intersected by a glare-line at right angles... a cross... the movie really hits you aver the head with the metaphor actually. (Tron in the first movie corresponds to the Apostle Peter by the way... left on Earth to bring the word to the masses.) The second movie was awesome because it didn't shy away from the inherently RELIGIOUS nature of the subject matter. It was a pretty parallel retelling of Paradise Lost with Flynn as God-the-Father, Quorra and Sam jointly as the favored creation: the Son, and Clu as Lucifer. Especially fun, is that Tron is the angel Abdiel... one of the most interesting characters of Paradise Lost... an Angel who initially joins Lucifer's rebellion but switches sides back to God. Another excellent thing about the second movie is that while Flynn is functionally a God in the computer-realm, he's not The God... there are things that are beyond him like the Iso's... this continues the theme from the first movie where Tron asks Flynn, having learned that Flynn is a User, "Everything that you've done is according to a plan, right?" to which Flynn laughs "You Wish! You guys know how it is. You just keep doing whatever it looks like your supposed to be doing no matter how crazy it seems!" The programs take this as religious revelation, but of course it's revelation not for them, but for us... Just because Flynn is their Creator and god in a sense, doesn't mean he's ACTUALLY GOD! This is a necessary element in both films because it keeps Flynn human and relatable to the audience, despite his metaphorically divine position. If Tron3 is to succeed and not bring shame to the Franchise, it absolutely MUST continue to embrace the Judeo-Christian RELIGIOUS metaphore... ANYTHING ELSE would not have the same feel, the same essence, the same soul as the first two movies and would, no matter how excellent it was in other respects, not be a TRON movie! The obvious choice of source material is of course Paradise Regained. (The story of Jesus's being tempted by the Devil with the potential for wealth, power, glory and even eternal life on Earth, during his 40 days and 40 nights in the dessert, but CHOOSING to sacrifice himself on the cross for all of mankind anyway). Alternatively the story of the End Times in Revelation would be a tempting metaphor for the third movie.
Nice, even if TR3N might not be like the Legacy movie or Uprising show I watched of TRON growing up? I'll still be able to give this movie a watch imo, plus I think it would be alot more enjoyable for me to watch than whatever any Live Action remake that Disney has even when usually the only Live Action movies from Disney that I grew up with was always Pirates of The Carribean,National Treasure,Narnia, and TRON XD lol.
I can't be the only one that sees red flags right? Not seeing the original cast is one of them. Jared Leto doesn't strike me as the person to continue this franchise with. I wish they decided on continuing/finishing the Tron Uprising story first. There's way too many unanswered story elements that needed to be shown.

I like how they went with the whole fan design, I've seen "TR3N" be used in fan made videos 10 years ago
It's because Kosinski's planned sequel was called "TR3N" at the time. Rønning just kept it that way
LET'S GOOO WE'RE SO FUCKING BACK
IT'S ALMOST HERE!!!

Tron 3. Bring back bridges, the one who played his son, Olivia Wilde and the one played tron in the first two films. That would be perfect.

I didn't know Disney reposted the teaser for the director seat for TR3N so I was very surprised to see they still somewhat care about Tron
Yeah, it actually seems like Disney is making TRON: ARES a priority now. The only pinned posts on their Instagram are TRON-related.
It’s about time, we won today boys 🎉
FINALLY!!! A NEW TRON MOVIE!!!
I hope its not garbage
As long as it looks as good as Legacy then I'm with it
WE WILL BE SEATED

As long as Brie Larson is nowhere near this, there is hope.
What does Brie Larson have to do with this?

@@Silentguy_You know him from Morbius & Suicide Squad, but he had decent roles in Blade Runner & American Psycho.
