- Setup a CHEAP Homelab Linux Server With CasaOS
We are using a mini pc with xubuntu for our home server, but you can use what you want.
Commands:
sudo apt install curl
curl -fsSL get.casaos.io | sudo bash
sudo apt install openssh-server
sudo systemctl enable ssh
sudo ufw allow ssh

Great presentation for me! I am building an 8 bay NAS from scratch and you have answered lots of setup questions. I do need a keyboard and display for the initial operating system install and then can access the server from my Ubuntu laptop via the network. I guess I can prepare my ssd from a usb attached to my Ubuntu laptop and then install it in the NAS server for boot up. My server is a KCMconmey 8 + 1 BAY NAS Case and motherboard is itx Q670.
That's a neat little mini PC and what a great price. And your full set up was no more complicated than a Win11 install with local account and a bit of debloat. The end result though is much more satisfying.
you could probably even install something smaller like Raspbian, then install Casa OS. I've used Raspbian to to run Pi-Hole and it work beautifully.
„Computer chips” are called „computer crisps” in the UK
Thanks for that, I enjoyed it more than I probably should have! 😃
I got one of these Beelink U59 mini PCs when you first reviewed them 2 years ago. Hasn't disappointed me.
Great budget device.
Thanks for the tutorial. The CasaOS UI looks really nice and polished.
Yeah, I like it.
i use the same setup. using mini pc too. but, i use 2 hardisks 3.5 connected using usb hdd docking from symtec. the write speed was fast enough. around 500mbps -700mbps. the mini pc i use was intel nuc5i5ryb/h with 8gb ram and 2.5 ssd as bootable. i also use it as adguard.
Brian thanks for the tutorial especially creating the network drive in windows. I found it very helpful and as always the presentation was very professional. Have a great week. Looking forward to more like this.
Glad it was helpful!
Hi, until now one of the best descriptions on how to setup casaOS. Maybe you may and a chapter on how to mount the data folders from the casaOS server on another linux computer. Windows supports this easily, linux is a Bit difficult here. Allover, for now, big thanks for this content
Good video Bri as an even cheaper option I have had running now for 3 years a Raspberry Pi 4 on a ups a a local file server and works fine.
Nice video, very helpful more like this please... I do have a question, is it possible to setup remote access from the internet on any device? if its possible can you do a video on how its done or point to another video? Thanks in advance - from Oz.
Best CasaOS video I've seen yet!
Nice one for those who need such a setup Brian but I have no need for such a service. As I made a comment I think it was yesterday a video on blocking unsolicited emails would be great.
I have a desktop computer setup in the house office with linux mint on it. I use it as a jellyfin server among other things. I use rustdesk to remote into it when I need to fiddle with it. Using a mini pc is a great idea. I chose a desktop because I can add one drive for the os and another drive with media files. I do have the /home folder set up as another partition on the os drive just in case I need to reformat or reinstall the os for any reason. Cheers.
I've been using the only Windoughs machine in my house to house all my media/files cause that's what i started with years ago. I use Emby, it works like a champ, but i WOULD like to move to Linux in the future, just gotta find the time to move to something like TrueNas. My other computers are Fedora machines and i too use RustDesk.
Bro i tought u were that girl. U clickbaited me and my heart is broken
Actually didnt want to click the video for the same reason... I thought it was gonna be some cute bae paid a bunch to host a channel 😂 but then its just a general nerd like i was wanting and the universe is right again 🤣
Lol for real I was like is she hosting a linux server?? This can't be right.
Chicks are rare in this field.
Great help. Now part2 - add opnsense
Thanks for sharing, very useful information. Also for 720p video, text clarity is akin to 320?
Thank you sir. The perfect guide for your -rr-s
Excellent explanation.
Thank you Brian that was rather interesting could I do this with an old dell optiplex pc Cheers have a great day
Yes
one small error.... at time index 14:11 the expanded test that pops up at the bottom shows "sudo apt install openssh-service" but if should read "sudo apt install openssh-server". It was done correctly in the actual shell though.
Thanks for the teaching! Your opinion on Nextcloud option for the same purpose please?
Thank you! Running my home server now, idling at only 0.5 watts l
loved this video thanks once again for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video as usual. Many thanks Brian. Just a question: why do you prefer the utility you systematically use to flash drives to the well known Rufus? Just asking… both are really good. And your personal server is a great idea and I can’t wait for the upcoming video in which you’ll explain how to go further.
I use both software.
Thanks you 🙌🏽
Thank you & more, please?
Should do a video on Ubuntu Appliances for those that just want a file server or just a Plex server.
You can use this as a file server
@@Britec09 just an idea for video
Ok I've tried that sudo apt install curl. That went thru, but when I copied and pasted the link from from casaos it gave an era message about the curl not recognized and something about version 8.5 and needing additional infromation.
Another great upload. I'm 63, How does Sync work with my Microsoft account. I usually like to clean install Windows every year or so. Do I need to backup Edge, Chrome, and my pictures to a backup drive? Or will Sync recover it for me?
How do you backup right now? Do you use Sync?
@@Britec09 Normally I would back up Chrome and Edge separately copy my pictures all to a USB drive then put it all back afterward. I just wondered how Sync worked on a Microsoft account.
wouldn't you need keyboard mouse and screen..to turn on the CasaOS server, if you don't operate it 24/7?
Is It a bad sign when you do the curl command & nothing ever happens?
why don't you have to set a password or login data for the smb access to the server in windows?
can you put amazon link for this mini PC please?
humm, i need netbird, kasm, docker, kuber's etc and for that I would need more than 1 node. Will this 1 server miini pc be able to do all that or will i need 2 or 3 of these for netbird etc
This is probably a dumb question, but I can't seem to figure it out :( How do I get CasaOS to just automatically start when I turn the machine on? Is that an option I have to do in Xubuntu?
same
how do you get it to start at all?
@@mrsentencename7334 so I ended up getting it to work by running some terminal commands I got by asking Bings AI lol 😂
You just turn the machine on and Casa OS starts automatically
@@rokibuca Yeah it was supposed to, but it ended up not. Unsure if its because I was using LDXE Debian? Anyways, a person familiar with linux went in and just added it to start automatically and now I don't have any issues!
make sure you're connected to the internet when trying to install ;)
So when I install casaos on the linux machine can I use the same pc to open the casaos website, or I must continue on my windows pc?
If you use a full ubuntu or Xubuntu with browser or any linux with browser yes. but normally you host it on a system where you dont work on.
For example: laptop with ubuntu in your network closet. use your own PC for accessing the apps.
@@noz3m Okay, I see! Thanks!
Dang I could use any old potato and put CasaOS on it, stick it in the closet and forget it, Question does PC mother board support RAID ? I will Google that just curious
Go for it
Most tv's have usb, so you can just plug the ssd into the usb caddy directly to your tv and not bother buying the pc.
Your TV does not have the features this has, but you can do it that way for basic viewing.
@@Britec09 thanks
So it is acting like a NAS.
So girl is clickbait
السلام عليكم
Plez britec09. Can you help me for printer sher for between win11 to win 11
Plug it into your network. Then all systems regardless of the OS will be able to use it. Simple as.
14:08 server not service
How to Fix E : "Unable to Locate Package" Error encounter during casa os last option after getting the ip page
please help me @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
