  • We all have our favourite camera kit bags and cases, but wouldn't it be better to recycle and adapt what we've got when a new piece of kit turns up? I give Shadow Foam a try and have to admit, I quite enjoy designing my own. This foam also works well in soft bags and is strong enough for making removable trays. Time to think in 3D !

I've made cases with similar foam (Kaizen). Disposable box cutters also work well, but my favorite tool is a Rapala fish knife I've had for about four decades

What a great suprise on a Sunday! Really enjoyed this video and such a great result in the end, well done! 😃👍
In answer to the point about the layers being harder to separate than you would like, we are working on this. The layers aren’t glued though as you mention, if we glued them, we would not be able to fully recycle any offcuts and scrap. So instead, we hot laminate the layers together which gives us a 100% PE product and far more sustainable.
It is a difficult balance to get the ‘peelability’ right. The bond is typically the strongest point so the layers separate above or below the bond. This means that it is not how strong the bond is that matters, but the density of the foam and the amount of air we push into Polyethylene when we extrude the sheets. If we make the bubbles bigger, we have an easier peel however it is difficult to get an accurate depth that is stable and a rigid enough material.
We are however always developing our manufacturing process. Hopefully that helps.

Thank you for the explanation... that makes sense 👍 I suppose the 'peelability' is a bit of a balancing act? How about two different versions?... heavy duty or easy peel for weak camera people !!! 😂

When I woke up this morning I didn't think I was going to sit and watch a nearly ten minute video of a man cutting foam. But here we are. I'm more of a soft case kind of guy but this looks like a good, affordable option should that ever change.

... and I didn't think I'd spend all day cutting it... works well in my soft bags too! 😂

We agree, the foam works great in soft cases! We did a video last week making some foam inserts for a soft backpack to protect and organise a drone setup so defonitely works for more than flight cases 💪

Brilliant find. I just came over to hard cases from soft bags and this will be my next diy project! Thanks!

Nice video! We had to fill a pelicase for 2 of our Blackmagic 6ks and we ended up going to a small company somewhere in the UK and got them to cut a bit of foam to our dimensions. It's fire proof and all these other good things (if our pelicases end up near fire I'll be having some serious discussions with my boss 🤣) and they work perfectly! Even after having to do a bit of trimming to make sure the mattebox fitted.

Sweet! I too have been looking for something like this for a while, only thing i would change is i would make some cutting templates in CAD / vector illustration software first and print them out.

True... that would definitely result in a much more 'pro' result. 👍

Bought some of this awhile ago and the concept is great, but like you mentioned, the glue between the layers is too strong and so very difficult to separate them cleanly. Very frustrating but otherwise a nice product.

It's so close... if they separated a little easier it would be perfect... 👍

Is there a US dealer like Shadow foam? What’s the technical name of this foam?

Hi Bill, Good point - I've just done a search for "100% polyethylene layered foam", which is what I think this is. It did seem to come up with some US versions. The key words to look for are "easy peel layered foam" (although I wish this peeled a little easier!)
