Thanks for sharing. A new/old Continental O-200 engine is growing in popularity as an engine choice for Zenith Aircraft builders. We supply a firewall-forward kit for the O-200 for installation in the Zenith CH 750 series and CH 650, including engine mount and fiberglass cowl.

I have flown behind several VW engines and was greatly relieved when I bought my Tailwind and it had the Continental 0-200. Those engines are bulletproof. Mine has the external oil filter as well. Fantastic little motor and performance on this airplane.

Ha-ha, my dad had a cassutt IIIM with an O-200 and sold the airframe to a guy in Oxnard Calif that put a BMW K100 1000cc "brick" 4 cylinder motocycle engine in it! (1988)

Nice video, thank you. What kind of battery (amperage) would you recommand for the continental 0-200A with a stytech starter?

Where is a good place to find a used O-200 for an experimental aircraft?

      Barnstormers.
Aircraft Salvage Companies: Call around. Local is often cheaper than shipping.
The C-150 training fleet is consuming a lot of these. And older make and models need their small certified engines. Parts that don't pass inspection are flooding the market and can still be usable on non-certified. But experience is often needed from experts like these.
If starting from scratch looking for a reliable 95-100hp. And a real budget is involved. Go with the Rotax 912iS with EFI and no carb to fiddle with.
Used are becoming available now also, if money is a concern. New can be financed reasonably enough.
The new EFI Rotax has a BSFC of 0.38lb/hp/hr to Ly/Cons 0.44-0.50. A significant reduction in fuel burn of 1-2gph, or 15%-30%. Means greatly improved range over your kits listed value with an O-200. Lower cost due to MoGas also. It will save its own overhaul cost in fuel savings over its lifetime. And take you farther, safer. With no mags, or carb ice, hand propping, or leaning needed.
O-200s are very stout. And are useful for any design that was originally made for them, eg Cassutt, Tailwind, or VariEZ. Etc. But the newer Rotax beats everything hands down. Except for owner overhaul; not gonna happen.😅

Parts are very expensive. I’m considering using automotive racing rod bolts. They are stronger and cheaper. Any comments? I’d love some input on this

For "Aircraft" parts, they aren't very expensive. Buy a used set of rods off of eBay. Have them NDT'd, new bushings and you're good to go. The problem with automotive rods is finding them that are the dimensions that would be required. I've built a few O-200's and currently have 3 builds on the To Do list. If you have to source a crankshaft, you'll have a hard time finding one. A new one will run between $4500-5500 + a $1K core charge. It's easier to source a run-out engine and rob the crankshaft

Tom, I am looking for a rebuilt O-200 for my kitfox. About what could I expect to spend for one of your engines?

JohnMac you can get a good mid time Continental engine four five to seven thousand dollars. make sure you have it checked out but there are many out there for a very reasonable price. Don't let the price of a new reman scare you off.

i have another question. could an engine from a motorcycle be used. a honda goldwing engine is a flathead style. how hard would it be to convert?

    • @ohwell2790
      @ohwell2790 6 років тому

Not flat head, that is valve in block. The opposed 4 and 6 cylinder engines in the Honda Gold Wings are over head cam engines with valves in the head. But, as you indicated, yes I to think that it would be a great choice for a aircraft engine.

  • @outlawflyer7868

ok, so what about a continental A-40 engine? i have read that that engine is a terrible engine and is hard to keep running. what do you say?
