In live performances, Pentatonix use ear phones that give them a click beat. This makes it much easier to stay together and in time. Kirstin and Scott have both said that when they occasionally lose track of their note they listen for Mitch; once he gets started Mitch is ALWAYS in tune, and from his notes they can get their notes. The other side of that coin is that occasionally, in a live concert, they'll suddenly notice that they aren't singing when they should be, and the reason is always the same: they were listening to Mitch's beautiful voice and stopped singing so they could hear him better. Ah, the hazards of working with one of the best singers in the world.
Recently, I was watching reactions to The Prayer, as I am want to do at least a few times a week, and a commenter said that they have a PhD in music? I didn't know that was a thing but anyway, he said that one of the most difficult things to do is to come in while someone else is holding a note and it is the wrong note. This guy said that towards the end of the song, Scott is holding a note and that he is just a little flat and then Mitch came in and was dead right on the note. I know that in interviews when asked who is the best singer they all respond Mitch. He really has a once in a generation voice and in addition, is such a caring and empathic person. He always sings with such passion but makes it look so easy. You never see him strain. I don't know anything about music but I think to do that you must have really good technique. While watching them perform, I am aware of the other members and know how wonderful they are individually and together but my eye just gravitates to Mitch. ♥♥♥
@@deborahdoesscrap Kevin has perfect pitch; if they need someone to give them a starter note he's the one they ask. Mitch apparently has perfect relative pitch - once Mitch has a starter note he can not only duplicate it but find the note that's, say, a third above, or whatever interval he wants. And once Mitch gets started he ALWAYS stays on tune; that's why Kirstin and Scott listen for him any time they feel lost in a song.
I assume you've seen SuperFruit's Frozen medley? After the end of that, in the blooper reel, they were playing a game they made up in high school. The object of the game is to sing as far off-tune as possible, for as long as possible, without dissolving into fits of laughter. I suspect that this game is good practice for finding the right note when others are off-key, but I'm just speculating.
Was it a live performance of "The Prayer" that was being reacted to? Because the official video is them lip-synching to the recording they made in the studio for release on the album, and I don't believe they were all singing together in the studio; I'll have to re-watch "The Making of Evergreen" to be sure.
Edit: I just re-watched "The Recording of Evergreen." For this album they didn't follow their usual process; they were all in the studio, in individual booths, with microphones and over-the-ear headphones, recording together. Their was one point where Kirstin re-recorded a segment of her part. So, I don't know.
@@margretrosenberg420 I honestly don't remember if it was live or the taped version. I just went back through my history to see if I could find it but I have watched so many reactions to their songs that I likely will never see it again. I do remember the PHD guy gave the time stamp to show where he was referring. I don't know anything about music except what I like and for me music is about the feelings, emotions and past connections that it evokes in me and PTX always draws those out in me. Thank you for the education about the click beat. I had not heard about that. I have seen their earpieces, of course. I thought I remembered someone saying that they can hear themselves that way? I have seen them take them out partway through songs but again, my musical knowledge is pretty limited.
@@deborahdoesscrap Have you seen a singer (not Pentatonix) put a finger in his ear in order to hear his own voice better? There's a problem with this technique; it means you hear yourself only through bone conduction.
Years ago, an acquaintance met my cousin Pam for the first time. I didn't introduce Pam as a relative, but after Pam left my acquaintance correctly identified her as my cousin, and I wondered how she knew, because Pam and I look nothing alike. But when I heard a recording of my own voice shortly after, I knew. I sound almost exactly like Pam, but only in a recording, not to myself when I'm speaking. Recordings "hear" us the way other people do, through the air. We hear ourselves through both the air and bone conduction - sound waves traveling to our ears through vibrations in our jaws and skull bones. If you hear yourself singing through bone conduction only, you'll think you're on-key but others will hear you as off-key. This is why, when someone is wearing headphones and singing along to a song only they can hear, they always sound terrible.
So when professional singers use headphones while they're singing, those headphones have to feed them the sound of their own voice as it's being picked up by their microphone, along with whatever other information it's giving them, like click beats, or the voice of a bandmate. And I don't know what all is fed to Pentatonix through the earpieces they wear while performing, let alone the headphones they were wearing while recording "The Prayer." I DO know that they can hear each other in concerts, either through the air or their earpieces, because of Scott's and Kirstin's stories about listening to Mitch when they're performing, but that's about it.
@@margretrosenberg420 You are a fountain of information! I remember watching early PTX videos and everyone commenting about the side smile that Kirstie use to do. They all thought it was so cute and flirty, and it was! I can remember back in my chorus days that the instructor taught us to do that to hear ourselves and I think that Kirstie's choral instructor probably taught her also. She doesn't do it anymore and likely just has more confidence in her singing ability. Everyone hears things differently. I would say that the "PTX wall of sound" at the end of the Imagine video, always sounds off to me. I think it is the only example I can remember where I would say that to my ear, their voices just didn't gel. Someone sounded off key to me but that is just my ear. Everyone else raves about it so I am sure it is just me!

Again, thank you for persevering. I can't imagine how frustrating it must be to continually have your reaction videos blocked. "I Rise" is an original they released about 9 months ago as Audio only. They also did a live performance on the Masked Singer - the best version is an unmasked version of Creep.
I do believe they did react to the Creep video., but not yet to I Rise. They did do a live version of that on their Euro tour two years ago.
It is really mind boggling that they sound just as good live. What they do is really hard and they do it so effortlessly.
They really are the most personable. My husband and I met Kevin in the elevator the day before the show (we stupidly didn’t ask for a selfie) and then I met Scott and Mark after the show (I did ask for a picture and they were so kind, Scott offered to take the pic “because he has great selfie arms) and then I ran into Matt right before check out and we took a pic. Seeing them live is always surreal, but this time takes the cake!
If ever I come into some money all I want to do is fly over and watch live shows of pentatonix. Won't even go sight seeing. TX for this. Greetings from South Africa
Keep in mind this was the first time they’d performed the 90’s dance medley live. They’re just that good. They have quite a few of these professionally recorded livestreams now. Always great sound quality. At least a couple of their Christmas shows and the rest of this concert. Which I was at and it was incredible. You should be safe with any of that content. Look up evergreen experience livestream, the most wonderful tour of the year livestream which you can find on my channel, and of course the Hollywood bowl 2022. My Hollywood bowl content is just my phone recordings but the Hollywood bowl,but the most wonderful tour of the year stuff is from their livestream. I haven’t had any issues putting that stuff up.
No auto tune? No problem, they do it themselves 😂😂😂😂😂😂 I love that part as well.
Saw them do this in concert. It was crazy good. Everyone was out of their seats dancing and singing. Such fun.

The arrangement they use is from Sister Act. "Joyful, Joyful" started as a Latin hymn, the most common music setting is "Ode to Joy" by Beethoven. PTX brings their own Joy to the show.

The original is fun to watch, too. They are dressed in 90s clothing, which they change into other 90s clothing as they sing. AND I want Scott's glasses. I recommend it.
On the mix: when I saw them in Melbourne the sound desk was epic. Six monitors and a tech for each one. It's a far cry from blowing speakers in school auditoriums 13 years ago

Scott’s runs are always a clue to the liveness of it all. Dif riffs depending on what he feels.
It’s my personal opinion (unsupported by any particular knowledge) that singing live is the natural default for PTX, even though their recordings are stellar as well. They just don’t disappoint, ever. If this video posted with no UA-cam drama, there are many more from this Hollywood Bowl concert. It was recorded to stream afterwards so the quality is very good. Their Kentucky Christmas concert may have been professionally recorded as well, if you want to give any of those songs a try. Love that you both love them so much! Peace …
Mitch is a super-fine mimic, so yes, he was imitating the autotune!
Imagine thousands of people at a concert (at an amphitheater, which is technically outside and non-air conditioned) in the Florida summer heat, temps over 100° F at night. Every person physically able was standing and dancing like crazy during this song! I was lucky enough to be in the front row, and I'm telling you right now, Pentatonix is the realest deal around!! Even when they occasionally use backing tracks for songs (like for "I Rise"), it's still incredible.
Just do the entire Hollywood Bowl 2022 concert. Just do it. 😊
It will never become commonplace to me that they can do this live and just slay it. Fun watching you guys enjoy this so much.
If you have never seen the official video watch it so you can see how close the live version is with notes and transitions. In the official video they use autotune on the Cher Song “Believe . Life After Love” because Cher used it for effect.
For a huge WOW, check out the official video of Problem, an Ariana Grande Song. Then listen to them perform it live at a radio station ( Pentatonix Problem, FM Live ) You will be mind blown.

The first time I saw the MV of this, I never thought they'd sing it live but here it is. I believe this Hollywood Bowl performance was the first time they did it. Trivia: Kirstie's baby was 3-4 months at this time.
I was at this concert and it was amazing! I believe there’s a video for every song at that concert. Try their Star Wars performance at the American Music Awards or Heroes and Villains for a tribute to the Beach Boys at the Grammys or Problem done live at a European radio station.
The only hero’s and villains that’s left is the one recorded by a fan from far away. The one that aired on tv is gone and they wouldn’t be able to,do that anyway without getting a strike.

From what I understand, as of Jan. 1st 2024 PTX went independant, they are not signed with any record company, therefore there should be no more copyright on their videos, if what I read is true. Worth keeping in mind and checking out later on.
Anything LIVE is great by them. Find the Hollywood Bowl 2022 videos. They’re outstanding.
Something you guys did added sound that I haven’t heard before. Maybe your system has some EQ settings my iPad lacks. Another reviewer noted that this was Kirstie’s first concert back after having her baby and that she seemed a bit tired by the end. He said that “I know you know this. C’mon, sing it with me,” gave her just a gulp breath to get back on. I still think of them as the 19 year-old kids but they’re stone pros.

HE is the man behind their live sound and mixes them perfectly. I wasn't here, but I've seen them do this live and they are just astonishing. I enjoy watching you appreciate the greatness! The official video isn't better, it's exactly the same - except they actually use autotune on the Cher bits to honor her original. Leave it to Mitch to be able to semi-duplicate that live! He is like a magpie, he can make his voice sound like so many things!
I had the privilege to see PTX in concert last summer. Amazing. Scott is so upbeat and positive. He speaks most of the time. Please do Scott's Mad About You the cinematic version. It is epic.

Fun fact: In the studio version of this song, they actually do use pretty heavy autotune when they sing Believe as an homage to the way Cher originally did it.
