I am from Trinidad but now live in England. My cousin studied in Jamaica in the 60s and came back to Trinidad with a suitcase of Ska music so I knew all the older tunes,he also showed us how to dance the SKA.I came to England on a big ship called the Begona, when they played the Ska music on the ship I danced it with many girls, but when I asked the Jamaican girls to dance they told me they couldn't dance it.I did have a nice time with one Jamaican girl though, she told me they were country girls and they shy.

Part 3 of the documentary This Is Ska (1964)
Toots and the Maytals are back to lead things off, but somehow Toots has been lost. So just the Maytals, Raleigh Gordon and Jerry McCarthy, are singing. She Will Never Let You Down was released as a single in 1965.
Appearing second are the Charmers, Lloyd Tyrell, better known as Lloyd Charmers and Roy Willis. Charmers is quite famous as a keyboard player in the reggae era as well as a singer and producer. As the Charmers they cut over 50 songs in mostly the ska years. I don't think So Marie was released as a single. .
Third up is a much loved singer, Stranger Cole, who excelled in all three--ska, rock steady and reggae. He cut several hundred songs, both solo and with with other wonderful singers such as Gladdy (Gladstone Anderson), Hortense Ellis, Ken Booth, and Patsy (Patsy Todd) Rough 'N' Tough was a single from 1963.
And last on the bandstand are Roy (Panton) and Yvonne (Adams) Panton sang solo on some ska era songs but he is best known teaming up with other female singers such as Annette, Millie, Patsy and Yvonne. Two Roads Before Me (labeled Two Roads Before Us on the 7") was issued in 1964.
One part to go in this excellent film. Plenty of performances, not much talking---just what I like.

Joseph LoGiurato thanks, mate. Appreciate your kind words. If you think most folks don't know much about ska, you should see what they know about rock steady. Even less. At least lots of kids were exposed to ska through the 2 Tone ska revival in England in the 80's

So true... it's kinda sad how many ugly white "Reggae" fans can get it wrong... ("Phyllis Dillon? Alton and Hortense Ellis? Justin Hinds? Byron Lee and the Dragon-Who a dem now"? Lol)

I still love the 2tone stuff with all my heart, but thank goodness this music has finally gone out of style again; SKA is for us skinheads and other old folks... it hurt my heart to see some young people wearing a "Ska" costume and doing a weird punk rock pogo dance to it... this shit is gangsta, not cutesy!

There's an excellent book called "Bass Culture" by a guy called Lloyd Bradley. It's about the history of Jamaican music. Bradley isn't too keen on modern dancehall music. He points out that in all the previous transitions in Jamaican music - from ska to rocksteady to early reggae to roots reggae - there was continuity. There was also melody and musicianship.
