Great Two-Channel Demo Music To Enjoy On Your HiFi System
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 чер 2024
- People often ask me what two-channel music I listen to when evaluating audio products or calibrating them. I try to pick music I like that also sounds good, but sometimes I prioritize sound quality if I'm doing a critical review or evaluation. In this video, I go through my Apple Music library to showcase some of the regular 2CH music I listen to.

Thank you. I will add this.
So thankful for this list
Thanks Gene. We need more of these. I'd also like to really thank you for reviewing $2K tower speakers back in 2019. I purchased a pair of SVS Prime Pinnacle floor- standers a couple months ago, since they are deeply discounted now that their new EVO line is coming out. WOW! What a speaker. I never thought I'd like a speaker that is sold and reviewed as a HT speaker so much for my 2 ch rig. No glary upper mids or highs. Just smooth from bottom to top. With its bass, it is as full range as it gets for the price. Soundstage depth is also very impressive. Thank you Gene, Matt and Jimmy for steering me in the right direction. These Prime Pinnacles are awesome! Keep up the good work. God bless.
Thanks for posting this. Always cool to find new music that sounds amazing.
The most dynamic cd I ever owned was " Flym & the BB'S " tricycle " all jazz ! Every song tells a story . Out if my thousands of CD's this one will test the dynamics of a system , and the music is pretty darn good for your ears as well. Very clean with lots of space ! Drums !!! Big drums ! And beauty
You're content has 'the stuff', Gene. Thanks for putting it all out there! So glad to see mention of Tool CCT. Demo'd it on my ML XT-F200s before pulling the trigger on the purchase. Sales staff and customers started to gather around at the store asking what I was playing. Salesman Sam now has it on his demo track list.
Trombone Shorty - Neph is a fun demo track.
Pearl Jam - Present Tense covers quite a range too...atmos version only offers slight enhancement, and still tough to make out some long debated lyrical content.
For extreme bass testing, my kiddo suggested TechN9ne - Worldwide Choppers and he wasn't wrong. Impressive bass mix across a 5+min track...
Lots of garbage atmos remixes out there, but also many killer ones too. I'll keep an eye out for your share of selections! Hoping for some Trent Reznor NIN Atmos Remixes, and select others in the industrial metal genre. That genre may offer the best potential to really show off what atmos music can be.
It's Popular Gene!!! Let's have your atmos list too!!!💪
Great list! Lot of my favs!
Thanks for sharing and giving some of your insight.
This is cool, Gene. Thank you. Nice to get an idea what you like, especially for test tracks. Always interested in stuff like that. 😏
You have excellent taste in music Mean Gene, the Audiophile Machine!!! That Tool demo chocolate trip chip is an excellent demo with music constantly moving from speaker to speaker. I love your picks. You are right about John Blake, please make sure your system is up to the task!!!
For assessing a setup ...
1) Dire Straits ... "Sultans of Swing" , "Walk of Life", " The Bug" ... Probably the 3 best rock mixes ever produced.
2) Mason Williams ... "Classical Gas" ... excellent for assessing soundstage and clarity
3) Steppenwolf ... "Magic Carpet Ride" ... excellent mix, torture test for mids and highs
4) BTO ... "Takin Care of Businesst" ... good for assessing soundstage and dynamics
5) Doors ... "Riders On The Storm" ... scary good sound mix, assess detail and separation
For that fun listening test ...
Just about anything from Maestro Guido and the European Pop Orchestra.
Most of the "One Mic Series" of single pass unedited live recordings.
Money for Nothing too. The way the sounds builds from the opening to the guitar riff. It sounds like a drum and synthesizer storm.
Great video. Opens up a forum for others to share their favorite test tracks. One I picked up from another site to test your soundstage and hear how your system places instruments in space. The Missing Piece on the album Blue Departure by Peder Af Ugglas.
@@user-mz6lt2pr9s
Sure. I'm not impressed by it, but that's just me.
Most Dire Straits albums sound excellent.
Great video - really enjoyed this!! And a fan of NIN. Totally agree on having to be in the mood and I can only do in doses. My gen z son is a big Trent NIN fan and we were so lucky when on a trip to London and by chance NIN was having a concert- what a great experience and a highlight of the trip!! I also recommend checking out the Fragile. Not a big fan but Madonna’s Immaculate collection and particular the beginning of “Rescue Me” where thunder is above and to the sides is impressive. Too bad QSound didn’t take off. Looking forward to listening to your recommendations! Thank you!
Excellent! Thanks for sharing this list.
Wow! I only heard of a handful of these artists. I need to expand my musical horizons. Thanks Gene
Gene, your musical taste is impeccable because it is so like mine.
Incredible 2 channel or multi channel stereo, high quality audio system testers. Beck - Heart is a Drum. Dire Straits - The Bug. Norman Brown - Back at Ya. Jon Williams - Duel of the Fates, Star Wars. Enjoy! Watching the video, reading the comments and saving everything to my Tidal, many thanks! Love great sounding audio tracks!
I would add Penatonix - Hallelujah (Vocal Group). Train -(Drops Of Jupiter) Mississippi, Hopeless . Good demo additions for your system.
I’ll start with various stuff by Thomas Dolby, Yello, Bootsy Collins, Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode…
Various Jazz, Classical, Orchestra…etc
Hi Gene nice selection, love that you appreciate John Scofield, he is the best guitar player alive IMHO, and also usually very well recorded and mastered. A track that I like to use to test systems is "Resistor" by Bill Frisell on the "This Land" album, it's extremely well recorded and the sounds are very clear and pristine, with huge dynamic range across the song. But anything from ECM usually hits the spot for mastering quality. Also I recently discovered Dirty Loops, they are amazing musicians and their recording quality is outstanding, for sure will put your system through is paces... I also like throwing in a bit of classical or contemporary music in the mix, it's the most difficult kind of music to reproduce and it really tests the limits of your system.
Thanks for sharing Gene, a couple i like that sound great are Santana Shapeshifter, Joe Banamassa @ Carnigie Hall, Floyd Delicate sound of thunder, Tool latest album.
Awesome job! We must have grown up in the same gen. Love Pat metheny since early 80s. Genesis/Gabriel nut. Had forgotten how much I loved the new blood album. I second Flim and the BBs but very low volume recording straight to disc. I can listen to the Interstellar sound track all the time. From the quiet clock ticking to the roar of the waves(my walls shake)
I watched one of your earlier videos where you mentioned Dominique Fils-Aime and I'm so glad you did. I really like her music and have since purchased all 4 of her albums (via Qobuz). But, you didn't mention her 2021 album "Three Little Words". It also sounds amazing and is actually my favorite of the 4. She does a couple of songs (While We Wait -and- You Left Me) in the old '50s doo-wop style that are a delight. By the way I was unable to find a release date anywhere for the blu-ray (Atmos) version of Our Roots Run Deep? Anyone know?
Thank-you for doing this!
Wish this was a public spoitify playlist.
Thanks for introducing me to George Benson 👍
From my side I'd recommend Vienna Teng(Waking Hour album for starters)
Would love to see a piece on how to best set up and use Apple Music on a high end system. Hard wired ? Does the audio processing from a phone, tablet , laptop differ or matter, etc. Lots to learn here. Thanks for the great content.
Thanks for this video. Quite a few artists from it I need to check out. Btw, Pat Metheny's Au Lait, apart from being a beautifully mesmerizing tune, it's great for checking dynamic range and imaging.
Saw George Benson at Royal Albert Hall. Amazing performer.
Never hear anybody talk about Chuck Mangione, he does have some wonderful music. Land of make-believe, a really cool chart. Also not to be missed is his album main squeeze, some really amazing tunes and sounds great on a good system. Don't forget about Don Ellis, jazz trumpet bandleader from the 70s, his rock Odyssey chart from his Filmore album, is remarkably amazing. Also on the long side but Worth a listen. Really liked the video great job
Hi Gene, in your opinion, how much audio quality are we giving up by using spotify Vs what you're using?
Great list. Looking forward to Atmos variants!
My main test track is "River of Love" by Rick Price (mixed by Chris Lord-Alge).
Thanks for this.
Thank You very much I was searching for this kind of content. It would be create if you could provide a playlist designed to test the different aspects of audio quality, like bass, mids, trebles, voices, imaging, details, etc.. A receipt how to evaluate an hifi system from audio quality perspective. It would be a great help to make it more objective than subjective that is something I know you always fight for.
Vanessa Daou - Revolution, Zanias - Burial is awesome, her haunting vocals is impressive. She has deep bass too.
“2 Wicky” by Hooverphonic. Also “Inhaler”, “wardrope” from same album. Lots of great ones on that album
Have you heard Khruangbin? My son turned me on to them, great bass lines.
Test tracks are cool, but even better are the surprises. E.g i would never have thought of using alice in chains for text tracks, but when i got new speakers ( oolk r700) i was very happily surprised at how muuch additional texture there was in the midrange guitar sludge.
Herb Alpert , Henry Mancini, I NEVER thought id say that im an old schoolrock fan & of all things baby elephant walk 😅 it sounds unbelievable, you gotta listen to it !
Very curious about atmos tracks to listen to
I’m surprised you don’t use tidal for the better sound quality ?
ETA: Donald Fagen's "Kamakiriad" album is a decent test CD. While I haven't used it specifically for testing, it has made me think that the speakers I use are decent enough. It's a good one to crank, too.
Michael Franks ended up being a gem as well. All I remembered from him was "Popsicle Toes" and he dropped off of my radar after that, or likely had been thwarted by my deep dive into rock music that pretty much eclipsed everything else for a couple decades, at least. I went right from "Burchfield Nines" to "One Bad Habit." Really pleasant to listen to. I would pick one of his albums for bedroom system before sleep session because it's a sort of relaxing and uncomplicated head music.
Don't know if this was mentioned but The Ghost of Johnny Cash is scary Spectacular. It even played along side other fine records mentioned here still is a peg above most. Really shows how a recording can be so, so much more critical than so many other things that people fixate on. Can't imagine it being played on a ultra high-end car audio system. I'm going to give that a try out today.🤔😬
Try the 2 cd set Doozy from Jackie Ryan. Came out in the 90’s.
nice idea, thanks.. John Scofield has plenty of albums on yt for whoever wants to check out his work. it is magnificent..
i saw Bonobo in the artists list, that's a start :)
if you have a powerful sound system, what are you even doing w/o some proper trip-hop? no Massive Attack in there? (i'm not trying to be rude, just overly-friendly)
(also, lots of 'audiophiles' are uptight about 'electronic music'... but we forget that at our core, we're moved by simple rhythms w/ accessible melodies. sophistication is great, but there's a whole wide world or 'feeling good music' outside of that and we're missing out on some good vibes :)
massive attack is not in that category though, it's heavy, it's dark but not pessimistic. it's impressive by its raw power, it loves big speakers w/ plenty of watts)
Those are excellent and made for a good little music rabbit hole to fall into. Took me a bit to get thru this video because I kept stopping to sample some of the suggestions. The Beyonce country album is definitely done well and I listened to that, Diane Reeves, and George Benson all the way thru. Have been a Ponty fan since Zappa, or at least was aware of him back then. Didn't find his solo stuff until about 7 years ago. Tchokola album by Ponty is good, too.
I like a lot of older jazz too. More instrumentalists from that genre play at virtuoso level, IMO. Then there is a whole sideshow included with seemingly impromptu collaborations that end up being awesome finds when surfing music. Jazz bands are more likely to have a complete percussion section beyond just a drummer, including vibraphone/marimba etc. Some songs I will hear things like castanets which make a real clear and sharp concentrated accent that pleasantly grabs attention.
Some of the Fourplay stuff seem to be recorded well like that song "Chant," and the song featuring Anita Baker singing "Your My Thrill."
If i don't like the music i will never buy it even if it's well recorded. But my music taste is quite big so i already have these: Deadmau5, Scofied, NIN, Metheny, P. Gabriel, Rebecka Törnqvist, Sade, Sting and i've ordered C. Mangione & J-L Ponty. Keep up the good work Gene.
Thanks for the videos, they are very helpful and interesting. I like Nine Inch Nails and have a few of their albums. I have some go to albums and tracks when I am testing new gear. Herbie Hancock - Dis is Da Drum is a good album.
Elton John self titled - I have it on SACD. A great listening experience.
Portishead is primarily trip hop. A massive sub-genre within dance/electronic that took off in the 90's especially in Britain. Massive Attack and Protishead are probably the biggest bands that popularized it. It influenced bands/singers like Moby, Bjork, Radiohead etc. Most of trip hop sounds just sublime on a good 2 channel setup particularly if you have correct bass management. The album Mezannine by Massive Attack is a classic.
Thanks, really enjoyed the video I have a track for you, it’s by Yello called Radio DADA but it’s the flamboyant mix, play it as loud as you can, enjoy.
Dominique is great. When sound isn't great but music is wonderful: Two albums of "Sixto Rodriguez". Voice, great voice, two tracks of Diana Navarro: El Perdón; Adiós. Bass ? Last song of the album "Thanks to you" by Boz Scaggs, "Nocturnal" by Amaral, or the great "Manual de Cortejo" by Rodrigo Cuevas with amazing lyrics (spanish/asturian) and wonderful mix of asturian-galician folkloric and electronic music. "La llorona" by Lhasa de Sela is a dream. "Viene de mí" by La Yegros is visceral. "Buena Vista Social Club" is an audiophile classic.
My go to is "Wajazz Japanese Jazz Spectacle Vol. 1" Give it a listen!
Gene, if you like John Scofield, you may like his work with Medeski, Martin, and Wood plus just MMW on albums like Combusticathion and Uninvisible. Michael Franks is excellent as you say. Sleeping Gypsy is my fave, the song...In The Eye of the Strom. one of the best piano recordings EVER is Midnight Sugar by Tsuyoshi Yamamoto recorded in 1974 on Impex (formerly Cisco).
The James Taylor album New Moon Shine is the best sounding mix/recording I have ever heard. I cant find a single flaw
What a fun topic. I want to give a 1000 likes. :) I admire your playlist. It has got some hardcore stuff, sir.
I use Hello by Adele for vocal. I can hear the shaky trembling voice and hallow space. Come Away with Me by Norah Jones is nice and relaxing, too, and a bit frontal.
I use What a Wonderful World from Louis Armstrong for male vocal and melo instruments.
I use Reality (From "La boum") for gauging the highs from synthesizer are not too high. The music from the 80s are recorded very differently. I also use LIke a Virgin by Madonna to see if the high are too harsh.
I use Piano Concerto No. 21 in C Major, by Finghin Collins, London Philharmonic Orchestra & David Parry as a gauge to how musical. I know it is not fair, but, it is a an average choice.
For bass, I use Brass Monkey by Beastie Boy to start, then I play Why So Serious? By James Newton Howard & Hans Zimmer. Starting at 2:27, the bass really test out how tight and low are the sub/woofers. For Declay, I use Way Down Deep by Jennifer Warnes.
For Sound Stage, Titanium by David Guetta and Emotion by Bee Gees are my go to. They don't need dobly atmos tech to shine.
I have Playlists "test lossless 24-bits" and "Ben speakers auditions" in Apple Music to listen to when I shop for upgrades. Sorry, Tidal Hi-Fi is a bit out of reach for me.
Have fun.
Checkout: Le Temps Passe by Michel Jonasz, Duende by Bozzio Levin Stevens, Stimela by Hugh Masekela. These are all world class recordings.
In modern electronica with otherworldly imaging and bass checkout: Zulu Voodoo by Kalya Scintilla, Queen Mary by Francine Thirteen, and of course, Make us Stronger by Ghost Rider.
You should do more of these periodically! Besides being addicted to gear, we can never get enough demo tracks, demo tracks, demo tracks!
@kewlbug
Whazzup Bradley?! Agreed regarding regular Demo Track updates. ;)
@@bbfoto7248 ahh yeah your tracks gave me a jump start back in the day!
Victory Boyd, Broken Instrument..supurb recording!
ALLMAN BROTHERS AT FILLMORE EAST !!! HAPPY LISTENING!!!!!!
We have very similar taste in music. I can go from Metallica to Kendrick or Avishai Cohen to Kraftwerk. I loved music before I got into the gear and it will always be that way.
Fink - Troubles what you're In
Jake Chapman - An angel will be with you shortly
Diana Krall - How deep is the ocean
Joel Ross - 3-1-2
Brandy - Borderline
Stanley Clarke - Goodbye Pork Pie hat
Al Di Meola - South bound traveller
Thanks, Yes please do Atmos , Movie scenes, Demo's ( there are a tone ) or whatever.
Paul hardcastle is an amazing
20:31 part of my trip hop holy trinity listen to the entire album it’s a masterpiece!
YES !! YES ALBUM!!!
It seems to me that we have a lot in common when it comes to music!!
Lalo Schifrin jazz meets the symphony - top class dynamics on CD or Qobuz
👍🏽
As demo I use Donald fagan "nightly"
Also Allan Holdsworth "metal fatigue" and his album "wardenclyffe tower"
Gene, how would you consider the quality of Steely Dan’s recordings? Also, and since you like Genesis, have you been able to listen to Steve Hackett’s works, such as Spectral Mornings? I wish they would had used a better recording platform back then.
I recently watched a podcast in which Steve is considering expanding the scope of his performances by promoting and incorporating technologies such like Atmos to recordings.
For some reason, Steely Dan Aja doesn't sound good to me on streaming platforms, but their other albums do. I'm not a huge fan of Steve Hackett solo work but I like when he revisits Genesis.
Whenever I see lists of hifi demo tracks, I start thinking of Floyd Toole and the circle of confusion.
I'm 100% "software centric", and will never allow HiFi to dictate what to listen to or not. So I need to make as much as I can out of as many of my records as I can. For me that ends up with "not having a clue" about what a piece of hardware does until I've listened to a variety of recordings through it. I can do some tricks, or short cuts, for single elements. Say something that steers clear of making Ella Fitzgerald sound hard in her higher register, and at the same time doesn't take the bite out of Albert Kings guitar. But my general approach would be listen to a variety of records, spannig over the decades, across continents and genres. The ones I "know" are good, and bad, the thin sounding, the fat, closed in, muffled, indistinct, and on and on.
For me, breaking the circle of confusion really only happens when exposing hifi to variety. This approach will most likely draw your preferences towards the middle of the normal distribution, at least in tonality terms.
By the way. In room I'd even say music using different keys, scales and chords will sound different...
Highly Recommended!:
STEPH JOHNSON TRIO - "NATURE GIRL" (album)
Steph Johnson: Vocals & Electric (jazz) guitar
Rob Thorsen: Upright Acoustic Double Bass
Fernando Gomez: Drums
Available on Apple Music
ELP TRILOGY!!!! WOW!! WOW!!!
For me I always end up playing a few Fleetwood Mac tracks when I crank the 2 channel up
No classical music?? There are tons of well-recorded 2-channel classical tracks, and surely you could have included one or two! Start with Holst--The Planets, with Charles Dutoit conducting
For bass testing: Oi-1 by Biosphere, intergalactic by Beastie Boys
Thanks for the list Gene but all classical lovers feel left out ! Considering orchestral music has the widest dynamic range of all genres it would have been nice to use a classical recording to test any speaker's dynamic range.
Here is one that will work your speakers: Horizon -Artbat
Patricia Barber- Too rich for my blood
Benson Boone-Beautiful things very good on his vocals
Nice
I would love to see the second part with atmos music. I can see the focus on the newer stuff, not the 60s/70s/80s golder era.
As far as my go to...
Scott McKenzie - San Francisco
Simon and Garfunkel - Sound of silence (the original one) / Mrs. Robinson
Amira Willighagen - O mio bambino Caro / Your love
- for mainly two channel listening, no sub needed
Chris Isaak - Wicked Game
Mikkim - Unity
(sub definetly needed here)
5.1 :
Both Queen albums released in 5.1 (A night at the Opera, The Game). 5.1 sounds way better than stereo in these two Queen albums imho.
Celine Dion - My Heart Will Go On
And for opera lovers - Bedrich Smetana - Vltava (Moldau), available in stereo and 5.1 on SACD
My go-tos are Tamer Animals by Other Lives and OK Computer by Radiohead.
Spotify -> Bass Arcade
Amazing for Woofers
I'm surprised you didn't talk about Steven Wilson, but maybe you're saving him for Atmos ;)
Yep
I just saw his interview on Darko. Super interesting guy.
I've got a couple demos 99.9% of people have never heard, Magna Carta Lord of the Ages and Osamu Kitajima Masterless Samurai.
"Beginner's Guide To" world music compilation albums are good.
I'm a bit on the surprised side no Anita Baker, crystal clear voice. Don't know of many Jean Luc Ponty fans, I count myself as one. Pat Metheny Group, We Live Here, track 4 To the End of the World. Great song to get lost in
STEELY DAN pretzel logic !!
Hey Gene, do you ever plan on upgrading to Windows 11? Support for Windows 10 ends next year.
My PC is 10 years old and won'tsupport Windows 11. I will change it next year for sure.
Anything by Steely Dan is recorded well.
Yes to liking nine inch nails. Try a band “Pig” maybe start with “Prays the Lard”. He is another one man band who work with NINs. Former singer of KMFDM.
Temptation - Diana Krall
Children of Sanchez is a great song !
Billy Cobham, Slow body poppin
Esbjorn Svensson Trio - When Everyone Has Gone.
Metheny is good. More acoustic guitar would be Paco De Lucia, Al Di Meola, and John McLaughlin.
Hey Now by London Grammar… asap
Great track !
Do you not have Apple LOSSLESS??
I absolutely do
@@Audioholics sorry but maybe I’m missing something! Ur computer screen does not show it.
@mikeeygauthier2959 I don't listen to AppleMusic on my computer. I showed my library for illustrative purposes. My AppleTV is where I stream from and it's lossless.
Demo music or not, I refuse to listen to a good 90% of these artists genre of music on my system.Ugh. I get your point though.
@mikegemmati8658

No Jeff Beck?! You're effing up! Get on that. Also, for something new and what you're lacking in your taste... If These Trees Could Talk, Bones of a Dying World. Surf (not the freakin Beach Boys) sounds great on vinyl as well. Billy Cobham, Spectrum is an amazing jazz/Funk fusion drum album. George Benson, White Rabbit and George Duke, Reflections!
Jeff Beck is good. I have crossroads, but don't listen too often.
@Audioholics his best is Blow by Blow and one of my all time favorite albums. I have the SACD of it and the stereo mix is great, but the surround version throws him in the rears which is odd but different. Then Wired, his self titled one and the Live at Ronnie Scott's is really good and one of his latest.
Later Leonard Cohen.
Beyonce? Forget testing the sound system... I don't want to subject MYSELF to that torture test.
