Actually the second line up. The very first was Mark King, Mike Lindup, Phil Gould and Dominic Miller on guitar. Miller left after a few practices and Boon Gould took over. I would say the rest is history- but the rest is legendary.
Can’t beat the sound of that “honking” JayDee bass. Superb sound. Bring TRACE ELLIOT back . Somebody please. My series 6 head needs some proper old school 4x10 cabs.
Phil was so right when he wrote these lyrics. So Sorry to hear about Boon. Really sorry. What a nice Guy when I met him. With Respect..with love Paul p..
Ps Though Level 42 have a large collection of songs , including instrumental tracks , unfortunately & for some reason i havent heard the lads play this thought provoking & for its time its foreboding message that sadly still mirrors whats been happening since this song was released... To be honest i saw a video for this song but im not 100 sure IF it was released as a single or they made the video for this song for promotional reasons , as back from the 20s to the 40s onwards it saw music change as each new decade arrived but for many of us it was the decade of the 50s onwards that really stuck out as an amazing decades for so many solo acts & bands... Again , each decade saw the old out & in with the new but many acts managed to still cross over from the 50s to the 60s , as inwas a case of adapt to survive but many couldn't change to a sound that yet again saw the 60s right up to the end of the 90s & there the trail ends as when the year 2000 came in it eventually saw the end of the Music Industry we all knew & grew up listening to... Thankfully though a train wreck The Tube delivered on its ability to let solo acts & bands play Live & i dont know why but i havent heard this song being performed by Level 42 for decades , which in itself is kind of odd as Level 42 did what all solo acts & bands don& that change their Setlist for their next Live Gig but at about mid way through the 90s ive never heard this song played at any Live Gigs i went to , as its a pity as it is as relevant now with its topic matter as it was in the early 80s onwards but i just loved the song & i didnt get too rapped up in the lyrics as those in power always try to keep its people in check by trying to hit us with ongoing news stories that are meant to scare us & to this day it still doesnt work but at least i lovrd Level 42 for writing & recording a song that shows us how those in power havent changed that much but the music was sure good listening to it , as those in power forget we need something to scare us with but you can't scare its peoples inhabitants anymore when its taken practically everything away from us in the way of the rights to our own privacy & many more but enough of the BS & lets hear Level 42 bang out a great song that id wish they played Live more than they have , as its a hidden gem of a song regardless of its topical matters... In light of this still ongoing coronavirus & its variants stay safe and healthy stay safe wherever you are in this world... .....
Thanks, been looking for this for years. Such a brilliant performance of a great tune. It's that intense groove - dropping down to the gentle bridges. Awesome arrangement. Gotta love the lady in the back centre, seriously getting down and gotta question the stiff blokes stood around like statues. Man, if you can't get onto that bass groove there's something seriously amiss!
Wow... reaaaalllly RARE LIVE performance of that song! - especially so early in their career ... Thanks so much for posting. I've never seen it before... would have loved to have been in that audience. Long Live the 80s!!!
One Hope 4 Heaven Not particularly rare. They played it throughout the tour which I attended. It's on the double live album A Physical Presence. The Tube was a great programme for us yoofs of the time. Every Friday teatime, Channel 4, live performances. I was in the audience for one of the live performances on the programme, not this one though!
@@davidsanderson5918yep, another foundational block of music on television for us in the U.K. The show was also repeated later the same night so you got a double wallop of, in this case, jazz funk if you weren’t out clubbing, pubbing or gigging. They changed from their original sound to more pop and blew up. To those who don’t know, they are incredibly accomplished musicians. Their live performances are second to none.
Just imagine if a time machine could make transporting LEVEL 42 1984 onto the stage of Glastonbury 2021. What would music of this quality and level do to the ears and minds of Z generation youngsters accustomed on Stormzy and Ed Sheeran et al?
Sheeran is another angle of the dimension, I think - why get astray? Let's love and recognize these wonderful guys for what they are and were!💖🎼🎶🎵🎈💕 To me, they are outstanding talent, competence (execution of talent), and so mindful connection btw emotions, mind, philosophy and (musical) joy, rythm & beat with harmonies! That's my view🎈....What's yours?...🤔❤
As a Gen Z I love and prefer music like this! I have this song on vinyl! My dad has tons and tons of records, I would say up too around 300 and now I listen too them. Always grew up with this type of music
They were fantastic but often wondered if they could of used a certain type of producer to present them in a more organic fashion...Lowell George or even Chris Thomas type could of brought that personality better.

Amazing musicians playing some of their best works. The sentiment of this song is more relevant today than ever.

Very underrated song from their catalog of extraordinary music :-)

Oh, this just takes me back to a good place. Love it.
So much better than the studio version.
This song is up to date in today’s world climate change etc and corruption in government which has always been there as well we know
Except that liberalism is practically dead. So the chant has been somewhat silenced. Sadly. :(

A top way to start the weekend, both then and now.
The crowd is REALLY into it. I am so proud to be a Level 42 fan.

The reason i'm even saying this is because Level 42 had just released their 5th Studio Album " True Colours " in September 1984 & then we see Level 42 playing Live on this relatively new Tv Channel in November 198
Im not 100% sure if this was their first Live performance on a TV Show as anyone who was brought up in the UK when this show first aired in 1982 would tell you the UK only had 2 Channels being BBC but the latter tried to make out it contributed more to Tv so we had BBC 1 & BBC 2 which didnt start broadcasting until (i think it was) 6pm
So all we had was the BBC & a collection of assortment of other Regional Channels being shown on the ITV Channel but ti me it was still basically only 2 Tv Channels to watch until Channel 4 came along we could get tp see solo acts & bands Live & unless you were there in those times Channel 4 was a much welcomed Channel as it would show movies you wpuldnt see on the BBC or ITV & they eventually showed either movies to be played only on that channel or funded movies that would never have been made by the BBC Or ITV as they only aired certain movies & shows they thought were not in any way crude or hsd swearing/sex or anything that was ot acceptable to broadcast on BBC Or ITV
As time would go to show Channel 4 wasnt afraid to air certain movies or fund them ti be made but they had one good thing that nobody had except the BBCs " The Old Grey Whistle Test " has which was the latters platform for music to be played Live but many thought it was too strict & old fashioned but when " The Tube " came along on Channel 4 we could get to see a huge range of different genres of music & solo acts & bands & this was Channel 4 main selling point as anyone & everyone was allowed to plsy Live & they would have to lip sync to one of their songs on Top Of The Pops as back then & many years later the BBC still wouldnt allow bands to play Live..

What your seeing here is Level 42 about 5 to 6 weeks playing new material from their new album " True Colours " & any Level 42 fan will tell yiu that they are better Kive than on the album & im also reminded of how good & prominent within their songs Marks JD Supernatural Series I Bass Guitar would sound & watching this id recommend just letting it run but close your eyes so yiu only hear the music & you found out how goid they were & still are & even though i own 2 Status Bass Guitars & that they are truly great bass guitars but the JD Basses were so much better sound & this even more evident when they would play Live & yes the rest of the band some & are playing amazing also , but the John Diggins bass guitars were & still are amazing bass guitars that have their own unique sound to get a chance to see Level 42 & other great solo acts & bands made us want to watch the cringe worthy Presenters at we just had tl wait until they were allowed to play Live & just listening to that JD Bass Guitar was one of my favourite parts even though im a fan of the whole band & the many line ups they have played with since Phil/Boon & then Mike would eventualky leave but they were still amazing on albums with other musicians & still tour to this day...

Mike Lindup always the best singing the lead vocal softer parts. Great song, great performance.
