Makes sense. As a former Fleet Marine Grunt (Iraq 2004-2007)…..it was taboo to focus on what you learned in Bootcamp. Bootcamp was hard, yeah….but it was only a stepping stone. Then there was infantry training. Then there was Fleet Marine training which was hardest of all. Each evolution, each school a stepping stone. THEN THERE WAS WAR.
He's not directly criticizing Goggins, but you can see the connection. Goggins does talk a lot about the training aspect, I kind of agree with both sides. Jocko basically saying the training is nothing compared to the hardships of actual combat and the everyday job. For Goggins though, he talks a lot about the training aspect but Goggins does say he doesn't talk about what he went through in combat because he wants to be relatable. Both great guys with a bit different viewpoints.

Guys Goggins talked about Buds as it was the foundation for changing his mind set ….. telling you failure happens and keep going forward. He could not mention Seal team adventures as he respects the code. It’s classified.

I did not hear any direct criticisms of Goggins. Sure, David talks about Buds, but at the same time, he does not talk about his activities as a seal. It's my understanding, he is not supposed to talk about it.
True. David needs approval before he can talk about it and he's trying to relate to the average person so he can help them become better. The average person could never relate to someone doing military missions.

The same is true in a lot of domains like police and firefighting. There are a lot of people that join because of the money and status, but chicken out when things get serious.

A friend who was a cop, once told me about an incident when his partner literally left him alone with a group of drunk and noisy teenagers in a park, at night. The guy was to chicken to take a punch even from a drunk kid. Now that's someone who really picked the carrier for the wrong reasons.
Anyway, fortunatelly the situation didn't turned violent and the cop requested an another partner.

What motivates Jocko is based on his life, his circumstances and his experiences, even his skin color plays a part in how he sees life. He did not live the life Goggins lived. Goggins on the other hand had a completely different life that motivated him differently to Jocko. So, trying to compare them is stupid and pointless.

Jocko and Goggins started out with a whole different baseline. Goggins was in a deep dark depression so for him to overcome all of that to become a SEAL. Jocko comes from an entirely different culture and mindset. Both served honorably and well. Neither will get any shade from me.
