I did this in the 80's, it was fun and very exciting. The club I was in was at St Ives in Sydney, I think its still there. I loved to see the big pattern flying aircraft with big motors. There was always a great smell of castor oil, meth fuel and nitro. Then there were the diesel engines on the speed aircraft that ran on ether. Such a long time ago now

I flew C/L combat back in the early 70s in middle school. Its amazing that 50 years later the design, sound, rules and operation have not changed much. These guys are truly excellent pilots. Kudos for keeping this sport alive and competitive.

I started in about 1966, and we stopped around 1974. These guys are good. A novice flyer probably couldn't tell much difference between them and me but an experienced one would be able to see in a few seconds that I was never as precise or fast as these guys. Oh...and I wrecked sometimes because of losing my bearing while moving so fast.

What I remember most about the old string planes was spending 45 minutes trying to get them started and 5 minutes flying them.😁 Never did get used to that noise.

These guys are awesome! Great reflexes, hand/eye coordination. Really like the drone coverage. You can get a good look at the moves from the air.👍👍👍👍👍👍

Yes quirte apart from the excellence of the high definition camera otherwise, drone coverage is fantastic. What was previously lacking in overall perspective limited by technology of former years. For a C/L combat affionado having flown it, it's greatly appreciated.

Did I just watch a model airplane video or suffer a heat wave related fever dream? Either way, that was pretty cool.

Besides the jets, this is the most intense control line flying.

These are the best US fliers, so almost every move, turn, cut and line wrap is intentional. As you get better you learn how you got in the line tangle (really just a twist or 2) and how to get out of it as well as learning how to avoid them. There's no decapitating your opponent, sometimes the lines cross your helmet or face, but not too often. This is F2D combat and you're allowed 2 aircraft. If you come down for whatever reason (fuel empty, contact with other airplane or hitting the ground) your pit crew starts the second airplane and launches when your streamer/string is retrieved from the down plane and re-attached to plane 2. Combat resumes when you get the start horn.

I flew CL combat in the early 70,s when fast diesels were still used I was rubbish but still got
4th in the local champs. I think each bout was 4 min which seemed like an eternity at the time particulalry my arm
Was so sore it felt like it would fall off. Fun times 😂😂😂

I'm still trying to wrap my brain around how they do this without tangling lines or decapitating your opponent. Kind of want to try it!

If you get into a line tangle all you have to do is get untangled, but most of the times you end up colliding

Trying to cut your opponent's streamer, avoiding getting your own streamer cut, remembering how many loops you did, remembering where the ground was the last time you saw it.. it's a busy sport!

Loads and loads of airtime and practice. Flying your own model has to be eyes off instinctive.
