Thanks so much for the "How to Smoke Your Pipe," 25 part series... I'm about 6 mos into my journey with pipes & tobaccos here, and you've skimmed much of the basics I've somehow overlooked. Nice, even, logical steps here. Congrats & thanks again for all of the prep work. Now, off to the editing room... LeRoy W. Lee

I know this is common philosophy but truly wonder how important it really is. My guess is not too long ago men owned one or two pipes and smoked more often. Did the pipes wear out quicker? Does it really make a substantial difference?

It does make a difference, but to what extent depends on how often you smoke and how many pipes you have. My great grandfather smoked one Dr. Grabow until he couldn't hardly fit any tobacco in it or properly ream it. Then he'd toss it out and buy a new one. He only ever had two pipes at any given time, I believe. But resting them between smokes is what I would call a "best practice."

Just watched the entire series so far. You're very concise and calm, makes it enjoyable to watch.
However in this video I feel like I'm left with more questions than answers...I should rest my pipe for at least a day after just one smoke, and it could be a good idea to rest it for as long as seven days. Why should I rest it at all? I can't smoke it, say, three times a day? If so, why not?

Ben (The Artful Codger) is right in his comment. Many pipe smokers will smoke the same pipe all day, then let it rest. Some of the old-timers who have just a handful of pipes will literally smoke one pipe all day, every day with rest at all. My advice is optimal, but not necessarily a requirement. Keep in mind that I do sell pipes, so my advice on this particular subject is a bit biased! :)

Thanks for sharing, Ben! It's true that there are many ways to eat this pie!

Nice! I've heard about the concept before, but never had any explanation why any resting is necessary and never paid it much mind. Thanks for clearing it up!

Great video! I just started pipe smoking in the past couple of days. I smoked two bowls, one is capstan and the other is captain black. However no matter how I tried, all I tasted was nothing but the burnt smell. No pleasure smells at all! Instead of perfect grey, my ash was black with a tiny bit of grey. This got me really frustrated. I don't know what I was doing wrong. Did I pack my bowl too tide? Or was the tobacco too wet? I am hoping I could get some tips from you. That would be very much appreciated! BTW the pipe I was using was a newly purchased Savinelli Tiger. I also bought a corn cob country gentleman bent, ready to try it out. Looking forward to your reply! Thanks!

Hao, I can't say for certain what the issue might be, but if your ash is turning black and the aroma is not good, I'd say most likely you are smoking too fast. My best advice would be to slowly smoke, sip the pipe, gently puff, etc. It could also be that you're packing the pipe too tightly. I'm guessing since you are commenting on this video, you've watched the previous 20 in the series. If not, I'd recommend starting from the first video and working your way through. Anything worthwhile is worth taking the time to learn as much as you can about it. Hopefully my videos will help a bit. Thanks for watching!

Is it better to rest the pipe bowl down or stem down

    • @ThePipeNook

Good question...there are differing answers, as well. Some also say to always keep a pipe cleaner through the stem and shank into the bowl while resting, while others say never to do that. Personally, I take the used filter out, and rest my pipes propped against the side of my padded poker table, so they are slightly angled bowl down. Clear as mud, right?
