    Great video, great to see that you have the Kong set up correctly . Don’t use one personally but see a lot of guys running it wrong.

    When I get to hunting height, I tie a stopper knot close to my kong duck ascender. That way if the kong fails I’m only falling a couple of inches. Thank you for posting this video! I’m a big believer that 1 is none and 2 is 1 when it comes to safety.

    Just clip it into same carabiner as kong, then you wouldn’t need another carabiner

    Make a Purcell prussik which allows you to adjust the length of the safety on the go so if you want it longer slide it longer and then again shorter

    Great video, one addition I was always taught. Never use a safety to one rope. This rope being the bridge- because if the bridge breaks it doesn’t matter how many knots you have on it , you will still fall. The safest is using your lineman rope to anchor yourself to the tree -that is your second safety then adding your knots to one of the ropes . Either the tether or the lineman’s rope .

    I've thought about that. I've also thought about the tether, the bridge, and the saddle. I wear a completely separate system as a backup. I have a harness that would be used in a tree stand and a second tether. That way, if any part of my main system were to fail, I have a backup

    Not trying to be a schmuck or anything, just adding food for thought in the conversation. I do totally understand wanting to being safe and everything. But the one sticking point (for me anyway) is that I went with an ascender on my tether because it made the operation of lengthening and shortening the tether SO much easier than using the prussic that came with it. To now put the prussic back on the tether as a backup to the ascender that replaced it to begin with seems silly. I went from a two hand operation to a one hand operation to now needing three hands or at least multiple steps to adjust the length of my tether. Maybe it would be easier to just keep the prussic to begin with and skip the ascender? Thanks for the content, and please forgive me for stirring the pot. Not saying any way is better that another, just stuff to think about...

      😂😂you think I don’t feel the same way?! Lol. There is a sense I feel to promote the idea of further safety. But its so funny. I get called out for not having a back up, i get called out for having a back up. All I’m saying is do what you want. I’m nit saying its easier, I’m saying its safer. If you have a total peace about using a single ascender more power to you. And to be totally honest I’m not sure where I fit in this entire debate! This was an answer to someone saying I’m putting other hunters in danger because I don’t back up my ascender or promote it. Before that comment I never even heard of backing it up. I havn’t even hunted with my backup equipped yet. Imm just saying in my thought this made sense. Thanks for the input and thanks for being part of the discussion, thats what this is all about but I feel ya.

      A Cornell Hitch should auto-tend hands-free on the way up with an ascender. There are other videos of people using a carabiner with a short section of cord to tend the Cornell Hitch from the top on rappel using the same hand that operates the Mad Rock.

      So I did a video on this too about 4 months ago and the ropeman I was running if you attach the prussik to the same carabiner as the ascender actually pushed the prusik right up the line with it no issue and as for lowering yourself on the tether still possible to do one handed if you practice it. That being said I don't use Kong duck or onestick not sure how that would affect it

    • @chrissherman3666
      @chrissherman3666 Місяць тому

      I got rid of my rope man and just use a pruisic. Can adjust it down with one hand. Up you need two. It’s not really a big deal and it makes no noise. To rappel down I use a figure 8, then remove the pruisic which also makes almost no noise, but I don’t care as much about noise when leaving.

    No more mechanicals. On the tether, running a heddon knot -> caribiner -> bridge. To the caribiner, i have a tender. So to sit, just break the heddon under load, and lower yourself. To stand, push the tether up and it'll auto tend the heddon knot. For safety, left the tether a bit long and its blake hitched to the saddle's linemans belt (slack is easily adjusted in/out). Since the tether is "permanently" attached to the saddle it'll never get lost and sits in the pouch. Attaching the tether is via a second caribiner....but in a way that, once tightened down, it never drops. Fast, light, safe.

      I disagree. Cheaper for sure but the adjustments are so much easier. Since this video I shot a short where I got rid of the extra carabiner and run the prusik right off my kong carabiner as a back up safety. Works perfect.

  • @308blr2

    Did anyone discuss attaching the prusik to the same carabiner as the mechanical ascender? Is the second carabiner for redundancy; or to keep from interfering with the ascender?

    • @navigatethewild
      @navigatethewild  Рік тому +1

      Everything that I have been seeing are people that run a secondary totally apart from the ascender attached to the first carabiner. It made sense to me, not much more weight added to my set up and if the first fails even totally which I highly doubt but lets say it does. My back up is there. I’m starting to live by 2 rules in the woods. 1. I would rather have it an never need it than need it and not have it.
      2.Two is one and one is none.
      Hope this makes sense.

      @@navigatethewild I understand that approach. Two carabiners next to each other enhances the chance of noise if they contact each other. If the philosophy is followed throughout the system shouldn’t we be running two tethers also? For a few years I’ve been running a prusik to the same carabiner as the ascender. Maybe running a single steel carabiner would make sense.

    • @navigatethewild
      @navigatethewild  Рік тому +1

      So here is my thoughts. Any time a rope frays its replaced. That doesn’t happen much but i inspect those a lot. The ascenders probably won’t fail but if something was going to fail I think it would be that before a perfect condition tether. I have gone threw a few lineman ropes now just from them rubbing bark. I replace them. The carabiner (which I mention) will be wrapped in stealth strip or some type of silencing type material. I’m just sharing ideas as I grow in this like everybody I’m trying to reach with my channel. Navigate the wild.

    • @navigatethewild

      @@stullhead3531 welp. About a month a go a competitor in the mechanical market was recalled for failure. You can find it on line. The info is out there. I’m not saying you need to do anything. I know the risk we take as climbers and a back up incase of failure if anything gives me peace of mind. Anything can fail, I’m just trying to do my due diligence since I have done dumb stuff in the woods and risked way to much in the past. I’m older now (42) and I have a family that depends on me. Having a backup do not effect my speed or mobility in any measurable way and since its a knot it weighs nothing. Anyway you do what you want. I thought about this a lot. I have changed things up a bit and shot a short about it last year. Good luck this year! We are getting close, maybe the bucks stick around this year for us to get one. Navigate the wild!

    I get it but where does it end? Bridge is a single point failure. Saddle bridge loops are a single point failure, ropes all are a single point failure? I have far more faith in my ascender then the Chinese lady spicing my Amsteel bridge. Just saying.

      @navigatethewild  9 місяців тому +1

      Hey Walter. I shot this a few months ago I think. I think for every hunter it’s different. Whatever gives you peace is important. I actually changed this set up since then and its worked a lot better. I still run a backup but it’s just a prusik knot above my kong. It’s been a great backup for me. Never have needed it but it doesn’t make noise or add any weight. It doesn’t get in my way ether. I like trying new ideas to see what works and what doesn’t.

      If it makes you feel safer. I’m fine with these two and now I don’t use 2 clips. I use one black diamond and a prusik. It works great! I climbed about 40 times this season. Zero problems.
