- Camping in bad weather - Stormy Wild High Winds ( Scarp 1 Tent ) endured before a stunning sunrise
For more WILD CAMPING Adventures click here : • Wild Camping Scotland ...
The drop in wind speeds came much later than forecast so we were forced to wild camp in the corrie but the winds were pretty wild! However the high winds did eventually die down and the next morning we hiked to the mountain summit for a spectacular sunrise. The Scarp 1 tent held up perfectly , even though it was getting a good rattling from the gales.....

I love nothing more than being in my tent in a howling storm, snuggled into my bag, with the hiss of my Jetboil cooking dinner. Cannot beat it. I fall sound asleep in storms!
most people don't post the nighttime bad weather hunker down. its usually just, "alright, well check back in the morning. ", but you stuck with it. excellent.
A tad breezy indeed, I find it so fascinating the differences in camping in other countries..yet the core values always remain identical. Just the fact that you can plunk a tent down anywhere without the risk of becoming a meal for someone slightly higher on the food chain is a nice change. Where we camp in the Rocky mountains of British Columbia and Alberta, where becoming lunch for a 900 pound Grizzly or a hungry Cougar is always front and center. Often it is a requirement to walk or hike in groups of 4 or larger and you must carry bear spray or risk a fine. If you ever make it out this way you really must hike and camp in the Rockies, you won't be disappointed. We would LOVE to come to your neck of the woods some day and do the same. We've been binge watching your channel and absolutely love it, please keep them coming!..there is so much diversity where you go camping, it's lovely to see.
Cheers David
Grizzlies don't eat people very often. We're rarely on their menu, unless they're nearly starving. Humans don't seem to taste all that good to them. We are the boiled brussels sprouts of the grizzly palate.
@@jonothandoeser Our luck would be running into a Griz with a love for sprouts😉

The mountain, route and map piece at 14 minutes is so useful.
Yes. More of this. Please
Having seen Ray's video of this trip earlier in the month I've been looking forward to this and it didn't disappoint. The shots on the ridge at sunrise were superb. Thanks 👍

Magnificent pre-dawn dash from high camp to the summit - Everest in miniature!
Really enjoyed this thanks Murray.
it certainly was a summit dash - although we did a lot of loitering once we got there to enjoy that sunrise :)

As you said Murray, well worth the effort and the sleepless night! The Scarp 1 seemed to cope well but I wonder how much more stable it would have been with the cross-poles? Keep 'em coming buddy 😊
Quite a bit more with cross poles.
I camped on Dartmoor in wind like this and my tent was battered as well. I hardly slept and at one point I dreamt that I was being lifted up by a cheering group of people. I then woke up with the tent blowing around just above my head. What a night! I've subscribed to your channel. Thanks for your video!

I ordered a Scarp 1 back in 2017. It's an excellent little tent that's kept me dry on my bikepacking adventures, even in day long torrential rainstorms.
I love my Scarp, great little tent, can't wait to get back out on a camp to use it :)

It's cool that you know your terrain, and it's not dangerous because of it. Lifelong dream to go to Scotland, grew up with some Scottish families who treated me as their son! Met a man a lifetime later, as I was telling him about my best friend and family, told him how the mother always called me son. He smiled and said, "that's my sister!" ...........!!!!
You’ll be welcome here any time buddy
Winds worse then just cold;a old lady told me once;she used to walk miles and lived well into her 90s,but she wouldn’t walk in strong cold winds.
She said ,it’ll do you in quicker then anything..
That is very windy there..thanks for video Murray.

Good vid Murray. That Tarp tent of yours has taken a few pounding. Seems to be well worth the money. Inferior ones would have been destroyed by now lol

Great video as always! Me and a few friends attempted Ben Lomond on tuesday and managed about 3/4 of the way up before the wind and snow were too much for us. We were getting to the point of not being able to make out where the path was whatsoever and it was close to a whiteout so we made the wise decision and turned round whilst we still could! Managed to get some new equipment tried including my ice axe and a nice new rab midlayer jacket which between that and the lhotse jacket on l didnt feel the cold or the wind. Looking forward to your next video!
wab always a good excuse to return and good decision making - no need to summit if you don’t feel comfortable- good stuff - hope you get back soon

The extra cross polls for the scarp might have helped lol been looking at getting this tent for awhile it looks a really good standard. Great vid
Hi Daniel - thanks for commenting. TBH the tent was solid and i didn't need the cross poles. I think getting the tension and guy lines right (especially the lateral ones) really stabilises this wee tent.

I wonder how my Hilleberg Akto would fare in those conditions. It's probably one of the inspirations for Henry Shires' Scarp. I've been in winds about 30 mph, but nothing like the conditions that you endured.
Akto take 30mph winds easily. It can take gales force winds although it is flappy.

Nice that the sides blow in a lot less than my Moment, which is a serious pain I'm trying to fix with extra peg/guying points, I always take a lightweight bivi bag to protect the bag from a wet flysheet blowing inwards. But I can pitch mine in no time with four large rocks (though theoretically illegal to move them), which I'd always do in weather like that unless absolutely sure of the ground. Nice romantic idea to pitch high up in the wind but as you say it's impossible to sleep = avoid! :-) Great video, thanks.
Thanks Justin, The tent has never let me down and I was surprised how well it coped in these conditions - it was a rather stormy afternoon (didn't even have to get the cross poles out). Still I was glad when the winds eased into the evening !!

Hello thank you für the great pictures! Maybe you said it, but my English is bad. What time of the year were you on this tour?
I want to go to the WHW in mid-April and would like to go on a tour from Crianlarich to Ben More and Stob Binnein. Is that possible? I am an old woman....
Steirer Lisa hi - this was last day of the decade (December ) . There a fair bit of ascent and descent in the route (especially on the ascent from Inverlochairig) these are high mountains and can still catch winter conditions in April - just keep an eye on the weather before you go 👍

Nice to see the Scarp handling the wind with ease. I had some very wild gusts on my last trip and I wished I had packed the crossing poles. Can I ask, how are you attaching your camera to yourself?
