I first learnt about Karuta from an anime called Chihayafuru, the live action was supposed to be screened in cinemas during a Japan film festival in my country 🇿🇲 but sadly Covid hit at the time so the festival was cancelled but I went and watched the anime and so discovered this amazing sport! I'd love to learn how to play this, starting with buying my own deck of Karuta cards some day
I have no idea what I'm watching and I don't really know how I landed here, but I can feel the intensity. Edit: So I read up on it, but the rules don't explain the wild card throwing seen here. Is that just a result of intense play or is that some kind of defense this tourney allows?
This is karuta, basically a japanese jungle speed, which is played pretty much nowhere else in the world, there are multiple variants but this is the hyakunin isshu variant which is the one associated with tournaments and by far the most widespread the game is composed of 200 poems half of them are written on the cards to be grabbed and the other half are destined to be read by a third party reader, each of the 100 poem is read randomly until one of the player has no card left and declared the winner, you get rid of your cards by rushing to touch it when the matching poem is sung before your opponent does. there are 25 cards on your side of the board and another 25 on the opponent's, since half the poems are missing from the board you get a memorization time before the match starts to memorize which is present and where they are located. The best female player in japan is called the "queen" and the best male the "meijin", i'm pretty sure this is a match to decide 2022's queen. It can also be played team vs team If you somehow ended up on this video as a non japanese then you either A) got lost on the internet or B) watched the show called chihayafuru about this discipline and were curious at what it looks like irl. After the anime aired in 2012 is when the first ever international karuta tournament took place, chihayafuru has single handedly been carrying this game's reputation beyond japan's border lol there is a very obvious divide pre and post 2012 Fun fact nintendo started as a karuta card manufacturer
How do you know the player has chosen the correct card when they send several flying? I'm brand new to this. I actually own a set I bought in Japan without knowing what game it was.

if the card was in the area that was swept away, its considered taken, as long as its in the area that was swept away, its fine
